Dog accessories - they have a coat for the depths of winter but that's it.
Bath bombs - completely pointless.
Many kitchen gadgets.
Clothes/shoes that aren't a perfect fit.

IMO the cheapest loo roll is a false economy because you use more.

magicalkitty · 05/08/2023 08:33

I don't bother with expensive, excessive skincare anymore. Serums, eye cream, masks, tonics etc etc. Now I use cleanser and moisturiser.

However, if I get these items in an advent calendar or gift I will use them, I just don't buy individually anymore.

Ditto for hair products, other than shampoo and conditioner.

Shower gel - I just use a soap bar now.

Foot cream - I use the same body moisturiser.

I find the cheapie 2 ply stuff less likely to block the toilet. Dc seem to use excessive amounts regardless.

RosesAndHellebores · 05/08/2023 13:32

@magicalkitty agreed. I use Clinique's make-up remover in the big pot now. It's £30 but lasts for about five months. I find that if I buy two products from Estee, Lancome or No7 I get a free gift which always includes face/eye/body lotions. As I use No7 foundation, concealer, blusher and powder, Estee lipstick and perfume and Lancome Mascara, lipstick and perfume, this keeps me going on the face cream front and occasionally an extra lippy or mini Mascara. I usually have 3/4 lipsticks on the go but everything else I use up and buy regularly.

Same as you with hair stuff and shower gel. Although DH is a sucker for nice soap.

SkylarSpirit · 05/08/2023 14:04

I don't buy disposable sanpro anymore.

Asda's own brand is just as good, if not better!

Ooh thanks, a good excuse besides wine to make the trip to Asda

@StrawberriesSW1

i have a bottle of dishwashing liquid in the bathroom, for the bath/shower I just squirt it onto a cleaning cloth. Hose down the bath/shower then clean with the sponge/cloth & rinse it all down with the shower head.

sink/sides, much the same except squirt a small amount into the sink, wipe everything then rinse.

I just use dishwash in the kitchen & hot clean cloth to wipe off. Very occasionally a stainless steel cleaner on the sink, taps, drainer, but when I've run out it's highly unlikely I'll replace it. Now I have a water Softner, fairy liquid does the job just fine.

i use a little bit of bleach/miltons in mugs with tea marks, but that's all really.

Ah! Thanks. I use a brush and bathroom cleaner for the bathroom.

I’ve henna’d my hair for years. Used to use Lush henna bars but they are expensive and quite a faff to dissolve. Now I buy the body art quality henna on line which is much easier to use (just mix it with an acidic compound like lemon juice and wait for the dye release). My hair looks great if I say it myself. Where I’d have some grey hair, I have lovely red/blonde highlights.

Expensive facials. Got myself a Nuface gadget (a lockdown purchase that turns out to have been worth it) and use that with a sheet mask. If I want treat-y toiletries, I’ve discovered that TK Maxx is great for bargains.

I have shopped second hand for clothes for years. It is better for the environment and maybe a bit more ethical but I have slowed down on the charity shopping now. Even bargains start to add up and aren’t actually bargains if they don’t get worn. I have a treasure trove of clothes and am trying to shop my closet.

I do still have my nails done professionally - it does me good to see my beauty therapist, she is a tonic! Some things are worth it.

Craftycorvid · 06/09/2023 17:08

Meant to add, some things I thought would end up not being economical but are: I have signed up to an Abel and Cole organic veg’ box and it’s great. I think it works out quite a bit cheaper than the supermarket and I have done a lot of batch cooking for the freezer.

Bread machine. I was worried I wouldn’t use it, but I now use it regularly and get bread that is way healthier than shop-bought and probably a lot cheaper. I buy good quality organic flour and I’m sure it’s still less expensive than ready made.

Chocbiccy · 16/09/2023 10:19

Do you have a link to this shampoo? I usually use john friedas defy grey but cannot get it anywhere!

Chocbiccy · 16/09/2023 10:21

Sorry that was to Carlosi456 I thought I had pressed reply!

TV package. TV licence. I don’t watch it.
Prefer a magazine / newspaper / books.

Alcohol. Sweets. Crisps.

British Gas monthly boiler cover. Cost loads. Stuart the plumber services my boiler once a year for a fraction of the price and he doesn't keep me hanging on the phone listening to sodding Vivaldi.

CurlyhairedAssassin · 01/10/2023 00:49

Same with the boiler servicing. What a waste of time and money British Gas is now. They don’t have any engineers, so if your boiler breaks you may well be covered but that’s IF you don’t want to wait 10 days for someone to come out. And then, they will cancel 2 days before.

I agree, just get a local person to fix it when needed, and service every so often

CurlyhairedAssassin · 01/10/2023 00:54

Popcorn etc at the cinema or theatre. If I’m going to sit there and watch a film for a couple of hours it’ll be after one meal and before another one. Or if it’s the last showing of the night then I will have had my tea earlier. I generally eat enough at meal times (3 times a day) and the type of food to not need anything till my next meal. I can’t understand how people can eat lunch and then buy a massive thing of popcorn and a bucket of coke to watch “for the film”. I can understand if it’s to replace lunch. But not as well as. And the price….total rip off. And the rustling drives me insane

caringcarer · 01/10/2023 02:06

I've never bought a lottery ticket.

Tumbleweed101 · 01/10/2023 08:10

Magazines - they are now just as expensive as books so I'd rather buy a book!

Chocolate bars. Shrinkflation means they are hardly worth the effort. I'd rather pay more than get less.

I used to nip into Tesco next door and buy a bag of their popcorn for a pound. Haven't been to the cinema for ages though... they've gone back to making films for fourteen year-old boys.
I'm still cutting my own hair. I wish I'd started doing that years ago.

goingtohellinahandcart · 01/10/2023 09:53

I bought some spray bottles from amazon and now make cleaning sprays, much cheaper, can buy a bottle of concentrate for the price of one spray

goingtohellinahandcart · 01/10/2023 09:54

Cloths/ duster

marmaladeandpeanutbutter · 01/10/2023 11:17

I've stopped buying small amounts of cat food from the supermarket and now buy in bulk.

I buy fewer plants and grow more.

I don't eat ultra processed food, in the main.

I keep cleaning products to the basics and don't buy endless gimmicks.

Quisquam · 01/10/2023 12:48

A personalised number plate
Fabric conditioner - most of the family have a tendency to eczema
Bubble bath, bath bombs, etc - cause UTIs in me and DDs
Nails done - DH hates nail varnish
Hair dye
Most ultra processed foods, especially processed meat, supermarket bread (except real sourdough), anything with artificial sweeteners
Air fresheners
Pesticides for the garden
Newspapers
Magazines (I read them through Press Reader, courtesy of our county council)

JamSandle · 01/10/2023 20:43

Hair dye. I stick to my natural colour and really like it. No idea why i dyed other than to experiment. But such a waste of money.
