Dog accessories - they have a coat for the depths of winter but that's it.
Bath bombs - completely pointless.
Many kitchen gadgets.
Clothes/shoes that aren't a perfect fit.

Also never had a TV subscription like Netflix or sky etc. Or music like Spotify. If there isn't anything on I want to watch on the free view channels (freeview came with my tv) then I find something else to do.

Shoulddobetta123 · 01/08/2023 07:21

It's actually been proven more cost effective & uses less water to put the dishwasher on with a full load than wash dishes by hand.

mkpka · 01/08/2023 07:25

Any sort of beauty treatment (hair, nails etc) - it just doesn't interest me and never has done.

Changingplace · 01/08/2023 07:26

beetr00 · 31/07/2023 23:01

I'm interested in your bleach tablets, would you share a link please? 😊

@beetr00 I get these ones but other supermarkets probably do them too

mermeria · 01/08/2023 07:29

Have never used fabric conditioner
Have never drank alcohol/ smoked cigarettes etc.
Have never paid someone else to do my nails, eyebrows or skin treatments.
Have never used fake tan
Have never paid for a cleaner or gardener
Cancelled sky last year as didn’t watch anything on it that we can’t watch for free on freesat.
I’m another who has never bought/ used a dishwasher or bleach and has managed fine without. Have also never bought/ used a tumble dryer.

What about all the energy and costs involved in producing the machines? I can’t imagine producing the machines is wonderful for the environment.

sHREDDIES19 · 01/08/2023 07:32

Sorry totally missing the point of the thread but I’m another one who never used kitchen roll. If we cook in a pan I only use a very small amount of oil so there is never any residue.

SnowyPetals · 01/08/2023 07:33

Pedicures, I do my own just as well
Gym membership and group exercise classes - home workouts are much cheaper and more convenient.

LovelyDaaling · 01/08/2023 07:33

We scrape grease and oil onto a piece of newspaper with a spatula and then bin it.

We only have one newspaper per week and use it for all sorts of things. Sometimes, we even read it!

ivykaty44 · 01/08/2023 07:34

Fabric conditioner
bottled water
fancy household cleaners - just use jif toilet cleaner and furniture polish
air freshers

AngelinaFibres · 01/08/2023 07:34

Molton Brown. Absolutely ridiculous rip off.
Expensive jeans. The Sainsbury's ones are a fantastic fit and £16.00
Any branded products.

littleblackcat27 · 01/08/2023 07:36

How do you get it in the bin? I scrape it in to the food recycling bin we have with kitchen roll

Let the fat cool and scrape it in bin with wooden spatula - I'm another one who has never bought kitchen roll.

Also I use bog standard washing up liquid as a cleaning agent for bathroom .

spitefulandbadgrammar · 01/08/2023 07:41

Might show this thread to DP; I never use kitchen towel, bleach, shower gel, a million things, but he’s king of buying vast quantities in bulk. Tears off vast great lengths of kitchen towel when eating pizza – just wipe your fingers on a napkin or tea towel and wash it, surely? – or uses a whole roll for a spill instead of, again, a cloth and tea towel. We’d not only save money on the kitchen towel but the cupboard space, could probably downsize and live in one of those tiny minimalist homes once we got rid of his supply.

I don’t buy anything gadgety; a knife will do most things.
Used to spend a king’s ransom on tchotchkes from Tiger to decorate before realising that a tidy, clean house is nicer and it’s easier to achieve tidy and clean with fewer things.

DemBonesDemBones · 01/08/2023 07:50

Kitchen roll. I do not understand how people NEED kitchen roll. What are they using it for?!

Wexone · 01/08/2023 07:50

newspapers-used tp buy them religiously every day abd now only buy on a Saturday with the supplements and that's my catch up for the week. the Sunday papers are a shocking price now and not worth it
don't buy as many magazines now. would have bought I say about 20 a month. now just a select three
anything from primary bohoo pretty little things or worse shein- complete waste of money buy better but less
I have worked in factories making branded and generic cleaning and food products for years. they are never ever the same. the bill of materials or recipes are always substituted with cheaper items. if they work for you that's great but no they are not exactly the same
using a dishwasher is far more environmental energy saving and cist effective plus more hygienic way to was your dishes than hand wash. plus destroy your hands too if you don't use gloves. I couldn't live without my dishwasher.

RampantIvy · 01/08/2023 07:54

Tatami · 31/07/2023 22:34

More than one moisturiser for different parts of my face - eyes, neck etc. Just one cheapish one does the job. Also I don't buy a exfoliating cream. A loofah or rub with a towel is fine.

I'm with you on this. Do we really need separate moisturisers for eyes and neck or is it just a marketing ploy? I also think that scrubs are a waste of money and think that exfoliating gloves do a much better job.

Also, spending £££ on moisturisers when cheaper ones do exactly the same job.

Iamnotalemming · 01/08/2023 08:14

Shower gel.
Soap lasts longer, costs less and it reduces my plastic waste. Helps that I have soft water though.

Fancy coffee pods. The machine died and we never replaced it when we realised that cafetiere coffee was just as nice, cost less and didn't leave us with loads of metal pod to try and recycle.

beguilingeyes · 01/08/2023 08:23

Hairdressers. Since the pandemic I've been cutting my own.
New clothes. eBay FTW.

Work2live · 01/08/2023 08:25

Personalised number plates.

I just don’t see the point.

Runnersandtoms · 01/08/2023 08:29

25sheets · 31/07/2023 22:24

I don't understand how you manage without kitchen roll? We ran out tonight and I've just cooked vegetarian burgers on a pan. There is some grease and I would use the kitchen roll to wipe that up rather than pour down the drain. What do you do?

We don't buy kitchen roll either. For spills we use a cloth. In the scenario you mention I would probably use an end of bread to soak up grease and throw it out for the birds. My kids don't eat crusts on sandwiches so there's always bits of bread around to wipe up bacon grease etc.

Notellinganyone · 01/08/2023 08:31

@BrokenByDesireToBeHeavenlySent - most of the best stuff is on streaming services these days so you’re missing out.

Pressthespacebar · 01/08/2023 08:32

All the mumsnetters walking around smelling of absolutely nothing 🤣 love these threads always turns into competitive tight arse-ness.

MissMarplesGoddaughter · 31/07/2023 22:28

I would pour any excess cooking fat into a glass container, let it cool down and harden overnight in the fridge, then I would bin the fat in the food waste container.

You can add porridge oats and /or nuts to the fat, allow it to set and then put it on your bird table. The squirrels and pigeons love it.

50FootWave · 01/08/2023 08:39

youveturnedupwelldone · 31/07/2023 22:26

Same on the cleaning products - dish soap, bleach and an acidic toilet cleaner covers every cleaning need in the house! My bathroom never looked so clean since I started cleaning it with dish soap, toilet cleaner does the kitchen limescale etc.

Expensive hand soap. Love it, but no one including me misses it. Cheap bar soap and hand wash works just as well - we go through it too fast to justify the expense of the L'occitane I used to buy.

Top brand laundry products - have never bought one. Own brands are just as good and lots less £.

What's dish soap, and how do you use it? I like the sound of this!

Artgalleryloner · 01/08/2023 08:41

OP I love this thread 👍🏻

lots in my list but a few of my biggest no nos that I’d never stray from

those air freshener plug ins - honestly what a waste a few drops of essential oils in water do just fine

most fancy cleaning products - you need bleach, zorflora, fairy and white vinegar. That’s it!

branded towels and bedding - I can’t tell the difference!
