What have you never bought or no longer buy because you think it's a waste of money?

Dog accessories - they have a coat for the depths of winter but that's it.
Bath bombs - completely pointless.
Many kitchen gadgets.
Clothes/shoes that aren't a perfect fit.

I agree with magazines - 15 or 20 years ago I used to buy quite a few different ones. Now I wouldn't even read them if they were free - all so uninteresting.

Ditto lots of cleaning products, as the house is clean enough just with the basics.

Never bought a microwave - couldn't see the point.

Any kind of TV show with a public vote - Strictly, Love Island, X Factor etc. The DC used to think I was so mean but I think they understand what a waste of money it is now

You don't have to vote! You can just watch the programme.

biedrona · 31/07/2023 22:30

Waxing, getting nails done...I do get haircuts and get teeth cleaned.
Kitchen roll.
Cleaner.

Fantina · 31/07/2023 22:31

I don’t use kitchen roll either, I just use a kitchen cloth for spills etc. I let fat solidify and scrape it off into the bin using a standard metal tablespoon if it won’t damage the pan (such as the grill pan) or I pour it off into a ramekin or similar let it solidify there and then scrape it into the bin.

I would pour any excess cooking fat into a glass container, let it cool down and harden overnight in the fridge, then I would bin the fat in the food waste container.

pour it into a coconut shell and give it to the birds! Mix some seeds and nuts into it before it sets.

msmonstera · 31/07/2023 22:31

I have decided I can't afford to buy tat and am working on less but better. Eg. I bought Docs a few years ago, expensive but they'll do decades.
I've also stopped buying random bits of makeup as I basically only wear the three same products but that could also be an age thing.

Fantina · 31/07/2023 22:31

@determinedtomakethiswork That’s my point. We do just watch the programme.

blueshoes · 31/07/2023 22:34

Sheer tights or heels for office. Can get by on those I have and now mostly wear trainers.

Tatami · 31/07/2023 22:34

More than one moisturiser for different parts of my face - eyes, neck etc. Just one cheapish one does the job. Also I don't buy a exfoliating cream. A loofah or rub with a towel is fine.

@MissMarplesGoddaughter vegetarian cooking oil doesn't harden.

@25sheets i generally scrape it over some bird food or into the bin, there's usually enough waster paper towel in there for it to absorb it, then wash the pan as usual

Dnd123456 · 31/07/2023 22:35

Lottery tickets/ scratch cards.

My DM used to do that but she would use a used food tin. I liked swigging the juice out of a tin when the fruit had been eaten. Until one day I swigged cooling liquid fat my DM put in an empty fruit tin. Bleurgh.

I've also stopped buying separate shower gel- I use my face wash all over. Helps eliminate bathroom clutter.

Surely that's ridiculously more expensive. Shower gel is about £1 a bottle whereas face cleanser is about ten times that for a much smaller amount

The RSPB advise against giving cooking fat to birds
"Warning: fat from cooking is bad for birds. The problem with cooked fat from roasting for example, is that the meat juices have blended with the fat and when set, this consistency makes it prone to smearing, not good for birds' feathers. It's a breeding ground for bacteria, so potentially bad for birds' health."

MeinKraft · 31/07/2023 22:41

Fabric conditioner and any laundry product other than washing powder.

BunnyBetChetwynnd · 31/07/2023 22:42

Alcohol.

I don't understand how you manage without kitchen roll? We ran out tonight and I've just cooked vegetarian burgers on a pan. There is some grease and I would use the kitchen roll to wipe that up rather than pour down the drain. What do you do?

Use toilet roll.
Pour in the bin when cooler.

Never pour down the drain. It's the cause of fatbergs.

Oh dear. I didn’t know this.

Changingplace · 31/07/2023 22:45

Fabric softener, pointless and the smell makes me feel queasy anyway.

Kitchen roll/disposal cloths of any kind - I use washable dishcloths and let fat harden then scrape into the food waste.

Bottles of bleach, I get the tubs of tablets that you dissolve in water, same outcome and loads less bottles going in the bin (and cheaper).

I did not know that , but if that is the case what is it that the fat balls / cakes are made out of that we can buy for birds ? I thought it was suet 🤔

I use a lot less because shower gel seems so watery in comparison.

Put it in the compost bin.

I've never needed kitchen towel.
