Tacky wedding anniversary celebrations? I ordered a floral crown ...too much ?

It's mine and my husband's first anniversary on Thursday.
We are going to the pubs in town with his son and girlfriend and a few of their friends.
We are both 39 and his son is 20 so hopefully we don't feel too ancient.
I've ordered a floral crown to wear and a sash which says "1st wedding anniversary-congratulations"
I've ordered some party poppers too for the pub celebration.
I'm not sure if it's too much or tacky?
I didn't think it was but when I told a friend she laughed.
I've changed my profile pic on Facebook to us on wedding day and he has just done the same (think I followed my lead ) ha ha
Will people think it's ott?

This for me too. Absolutely not my thing, but it sounds like a bit of harmless fun and your husband is presumably on the same page, so enjoy your day.

(There is a subset of MN which thinks any occasion should be ignored completely once you're past the age of 18 and if you absolutely must mark it, then you may do so only by wearing a slightly more brightly coloured hair shirt.)

Yes.
I think it's really sweet.

I’m sorry I’m very laid back person but this is just so extremely cringey. Go to a nice restaurant for a meal like everyone else does if they want to celebrate a wedding anniversary. I’ve never heard of anyone at all doing this & I imagine your stepson & his girlfriend would be extremely embarrassed. Sorry to sound so harsh. I don’t even believe you about the party horn I don’t believe anyone would do that for a first anniversary

Sorry but I think that's mega cringey. Has the first year of marriage been that bad you have to congratulate yourselves for getting through it? That's what the message on the sash sounds like to me. It's very "look at me". You know it's your anniversary, your husband knows it's your anniversary. The rest of the pub doesn't need to know.

If it's been a happy year for you then you should celebrate. I was put for a meal with DH last night celebrating our 18th wedding anniversary. I didn't wear a tiara or a sash, but we went to the same restaurant we went to on our first date meal out. DH told me he had saved up before he invited me to go there because he wanted to be sure he could afford whatever I ordered. We had a little laugh about it because I never order expensive meals and I don't eat desserts. Last night we had expensive wine and amaretto in our coffees and that's when he told me. If you want to wear a sash and a tiara go for it. It's what makes you both happy. A bit surprised you want to share your special day with DSS though, rather than something more intimate for the 2 of you.

whynotwhatknot · 31/07/2023 11:55

oh god i missed the bit about the sons friends going-i mean realy?

Gazelda · 31/07/2023 12:07

The thing is, if the friends and bar staff ask comment on the crown, sash and horn, will you beam with pride and launch into recollections of the happy day? That might be a tad uncomfortable for them. Or you'd just say "thanks, I felt like celebrating" and then chat about the weather or whatnot.

On the other hand, if they don't comment, how will you deal with the great big flowery elephant in the room?

Star0Fire · 31/07/2023 12:26

Wear the crown!!Why the hell not. Its just a bit of fun. Sashes are more annoying than anything, getting in the way of your bag/falling down all the time so I'd skip that I think. Go have fun, you only live once so why not. I think everyone is being a bit mean here

You need a piper for your arrival at the pub.

MaggieBsBoat · 31/07/2023 12:39

I second the piper!
oh and everyone in each pub can do an arch of arms.
There should be weeping and heartfelt singing to your amazing achievement.

My late husband and I only had one wedding anniversary before he died. Who cares what people think. Do what makes you happy and make memories. Tomorrow is never guaranteed. Happy anniversary! 😊🎉

NaughtyBoyGeorgeMichaelJacksonBrown · 31/07/2023 13:13

Actually love the crown, but only for Kate Bushing it up under the pale moonlight, not as a middle aged woman down 'Spoons.

Wincing a bit at all those saying one year isn't an achievement - I married in a Jan and was separated by June of the same year 😖😂

Craycraycatbaby · 31/07/2023 13:17

I think it's cute, you do whatever makes you happy OP. I mean, who actually looks at other people out in the pub anyway? I probably wouldn't even notice, or care, if someone walked in wearing a flower crown and a sash 🤷‍♀️
Enjoy your anniversary 🎉

I think it's great, take no notice of all the misery-guts' comments! I wouldn't use the party poppers though 🥳

I love flower crowns, they always remind me of my grandmother, who used to make flower crowns (and ever green crowns in winter) for me to wear to seasonal celebrations.

it’s therefore an absolute yes to the flower crowns (at least from me). Just make sure your DS’s girlfriend isn’t allergic…

party poppers I’m not too fond of, and I would hate them if I worked in a pub and had to clean them up.

Sashes: they don’t harm anyone. So why not? Do what makes you (and your DH!) happy 😊😀 it’s your anniversary, so it’s up to you to decide what’s right for you.

JaneJeffer · 31/07/2023 14:09

As long as it's not orange 😬

PumpkinsAndCoconuts · 31/07/2023 14:10

sowhatimstillarockstar · 31/07/2023 10:12

Why would I make up a post about a crown and a sash?
I'm guessing a lot of you think it's cringe
I just thought it would be fun

what matters is that you find it good fun / enjoyable.

so go forth and celebrated your anniversary however* you (and DH) want😉

*as long as it doesn’t have an unreasonable impact on others.

anything too loud, messy etc. therefore obviously wouldn’t be appropriate.
