How many syllables in the word "world"?

Inspired by another thread, I'm interested in words which are pronounced differently in different accents by native English speakers in the UK and Ireland.

I only realised recently that some people pronounce "none" the same as "non", rather than "nun".

In Scotland some people pronounce "pattern" as "pattron". Iron is "eye-ron" rather than "eye-un".

There must be many more...

One syllable, one clap!

dessicatedblackbird · 30/07/2023 10:30

I make it three...

One, but I can see how in some accents it would sound like two.

In Ireland “film” is often pronounced “fillum”. Also “elm” as “ellum” etc.

One

MajesticWhine · 30/07/2023 10:32

It's one for me but with a Scottish accent I can see it would be two. we-rald

MrsBennetsPoorNerves · 30/07/2023 10:32

One for me. But I can see how it might be two for some accents.

Plump82 · 30/07/2023 10:34

It's one but in my accent (Scottish) it sounds like 2.

BinFace · 30/07/2023 10:34

One but with a diphthong.

CarrieMoonbeams · 30/07/2023 10:34

2 syllables. Wur-ruld. A bit like wur-rum.

My friend married a guy called Carl, and oh boy I struggle with his name, because it comes out as Carol when I say it!

Library - lie-bree or lie-brer-ry?

ElectricToothbrush · 30/07/2023 10:56

One syllable.

I'm a bit bemused by some people apparently pronouncing none the same as nun??

NauseousNancy · 30/07/2023 10:57

I don’t know how else you could say none other than the same as nun??

Findyourneutralspace · 30/07/2023 10:58

One in world - just one vowel.

@ElectricToothbrush wait till you hear that some people say one to rhyme with won. There’s a lot of regional variation in the way words are pronounced.

SoupDragon · 30/07/2023 11:00

World - one syllable. (One to rhyme with none and nun 😂) I can see how it's 2 in a rhotic accent though.

Library - Lye bree

Like ‘one’ but with an ‘n’ in front of it.

Non. To me it's 100% an O sound not a U sound.

beccahamlet · 30/07/2023 11:03

Valuable....3 or 4?

Barold · 30/07/2023 11:03

Barold · 30/07/2023 11:01

Like ‘one’ but with an ‘n’ in front of it.

Which I’ve just realised is said ‘wun’ in some accents so that probably doesn’t help.

The ‘o’ is pronounced the same as in ‘got’.

So, like nun then. 🤣

NauseousNancy · 30/07/2023 11:06

Yeah I say ‘wun’ for one!

SoupDragon · 30/07/2023 11:06

These threads always make me sit here trying to say the words in other accents.

JaneJeffer · 30/07/2023 11:13
