How sad

Dombasle · 28/07/2023 22:29

Current owner bought in 2015 and it was up for sale in 2017, so a fire must have happened after that time for it to go into such decay in only a few years.

Tragic as it was once a much loved home.

IDoughnutKnow · 28/07/2023 22:33

I'm another one who thinks it's sad. The picture on the wall of the loo is clearly someone's school/university thing. In my mind, there was a terrible fire caused by faulty wiring, and all their other family photographs and children's pictures went up in smoke. It's so sad to see their curtains still hanging there - it was clearly a characterful house once upon a time, and all the chintz would have suited it.

IDoughnutKnow · 28/07/2023 22:34

Oh God, I feel even worse now that Dombasle has found the old particulars. Poor house.

feellikeanalien · 28/07/2023 22:35

I think it's actually quite creepy seeing the beds still with covers and pillows on them. Were the earlier pictures taken in 2017? That's only six years ago and it looked in good condition then.

I wonder what happened.

NewBrightonEel · 28/07/2023 22:35

Just needs a lick of paint and it's good to go

HopityHope · 28/07/2023 22:35

Of, actually I’m changing my vote to roof removed due to stop bats so planning could go through. The bed spreads wouldn’t be intact with a house fire enough to remove the roof like that.
So no sad end, jsut someone wanting planning to go through and prevent bats moving into an empty house.

HopityHope · 28/07/2023 22:37

honeyrain · 28/07/2023 22:27

Don't think anyone is disrespecting the previous occupants or family that once owned it...or even the house itself...The estate agents posting is unusual for many reasons, the price tag is hefty and the company who have listed it have done so in an odd way...hence the discussion.

@OddsocksinmyDocs dont worry, it’s just a house that the owners decided to knock down and sell the plot for more money. No fire or abandonment, just someone buying with intent to get planning and then removed the roof to prevent bats.

MissingMoominMamma · 28/07/2023 22:37

Oioicaptain · 28/07/2023 21:15

What do you suppose those ball like things on the bed are? Some form of staging?

Boules, I think!

bernieaa · 28/07/2023 22:39

Isn't it something about a roof not being in tact means you don't have a liveable house or indeed it's not a house? Therefore planing has been approved to knock down the house?

Aquamarine1029 · 28/07/2023 22:39

There's definitely been a fire, but the fact they posted pictures of the remnants of a home that absolutely has to be torn down is hilarious and really baffling. I mean, WHY?

Charlize43 · 28/07/2023 22:40

It has a Grey Gardens vibe to it.

Those pics of the beds with bedspreads are quite sad as they were once somebodies' bedrooms and where they used to sleep. Houses always look tragic when they are abandoned.

The photography is very dramatic as well - almost sensationalist.

FlamingoCroquet · 28/07/2023 22:40

Bit of a doer-upper

Very likely , if there were bats roosting there would be a Prohibition put on demolishing the house wouldn't there ?

Until the bats had finished their breeding season and could be safely relocated ..

feellikeanalien · 28/07/2023 22:42

The estate agents photo is definitely weird. It looks like they're going on some TV reality show.

ParadiseLaundry · 28/07/2023 22:44

Totally off topic and nothing to do with the lack of roof on the the house....

Genuine question, why did people put sinks in bedrooms in the olden days? I remember them in our neighbour's house and always thought it was unusual, but I've seen it a few times now.

PrimitivePerson · 28/07/2023 22:48

Nice al-fresco feel to everything!

To wash in. Maybe there were a lot of people living there and only one bathroom?

In previous centuries, there would have been a large bowl and a jug full of water in every bedroom.

BadNomad · 28/07/2023 22:58

I think the bat theory is correct. I had a peek at the planning permission application in 2019, the Protective Species Survey report states:

"Subsequently, the weatherboarding and parts of the roof areas will need be carefully dismantled under the direct supervision of the Natural England bat licence holder, until no further potential for bats remains."

I don't think anyone has lived there since it was last sold.

For morning/bed time washes. There would only have been one bathroom originally probably, and a separate toilet.

Many of my older generation relatives had this set up (people who are now in their 90s, or would have been). In fact, my grandparents had a bedroom sink put in, wren they moved from a 1920s house to a modern house in 1990.

I've lived in Military accommodation for nearly 20 years and most houses have had bloody sinks in bedrooms. Hate them - so pointless.

Helenahandkart · 28/07/2023 23:10

My granny’s house had sinks in all the bedrooms. It was great. No upstairs bathroom, just a loo, so you washed your face and cleaned your teeth in your room.

How so?

The seller has paid for a package. I'm surprised the photographer didn't risk asses the property and deem it unsafe. Plenty of missing floors etc.
