What is it?

Mine is fruit cake, you can keep your chocolate cakes and cupcakes with mountains of butter cream - I love a fruit cake with a cuppa

Swedish 'princess cake'- layers of sponge cake and cream with marzipan. My goodness, I don't know anything nicer.

Those are all cakes, not breads.

They are called loafs or breads purely because of the rectangular tin they are baked in. You can put the same batter in a round tin and have it as a circular thinner cake shape if you wanted.

Yep. My grandmother would actually make loaf shaped "banana" cake when I was little.

It was pretty much what most people call banana bread nowadays. Must have been a recipe from the 50s and it was really obvious to us that it was cake due to the amount of sugar.

I was actually delighted to see all that banana bread available in coffee shops a few years ago. Not as good as my dear grandmothers obviously, but so much nostalgia (delicousness and nostalgia😋)

That was the first cake I wrote down as well. (so many others I love, but this one... 😋).

Its the cake Im currently trying to "perfect" at home...

Coffee and walnut cake is my favourite homemade cake, and if I'm out at a nice patisserie I like an Opera.

glittereyelash · 28/07/2023 17:20

My mother was brilliant at baking. Everything she made was so good that I hardly eat cake anymore as nothing comes close. She did a fab black forest gateau, lemon meringue, ginger cake, fruit cake and best of all was her mixed berry cheesecake and bonoffee cake.

Madamecastafiore · 28/07/2023 17:20

Lyon's ginger cake

Co op cherry Madeira

Wensleydale and apple

Bread pudding

Nigella's flourless chocolate torte with mascarpone

I don't like fresh cream or buttercream so am a bit shit on proper cake.

Not sure I can choose one. Love Black Forest gateau if it’s made well - my Uncle was a chef & made an absolutely amazing one for a family wedding. We had some for breakfast! Carrot cake with cream cheese frosting is right up there too.

A good Black Forest Gateau is amazing but best eaten in Germany, the ones here tend to be nasty

DaisyWaldron · 28/07/2023 17:30

My joint favourites are Felicity Cloake's coffee and walnut cake without the walnuts (allergy) and a strawberry and lemon curd cake from a Waitrose recipe that is a cake when you eat it straight away, and a cake-shaped trifle when you eat the leftovers a day later.

ManchesterLu · 28/07/2023 17:39

I had a biscoff sponge last week at a cafe, and it was the nicest thing ever.

Lifeisrelentless · 28/07/2023 17:42

I like most cakes but not fruit cake. Absolutely love carrot cake and am partial to a bit of Victoria sponge. I like chocolate cake too but it has to be a good one!

KohlaParasaurus · 28/07/2023 17:56

Can I have cheesecake please? If not, just choose any cake without buttercream for me and I'll be happy.

MrsBelikov · 28/07/2023 18:12

Please can we have the recipe, this looks so fab and would be wonder for a birthday cake! Thanks

porridgeisbae · 28/07/2023 18:18

Chocolate obviously, chocolate fudge, chocolate gateau.

But yes, fruit cake/ Xmas cake is nice too.

fedupallthisrubbish · 28/07/2023 18:26

New York cheesecake with strawberries- yuuuummmmyyy

BrandNewBicep · 28/07/2023 18:43

Lemon Drizzle
Clementine Cake
I like citrussy moist cakes - no icing.

Many, many years ago, Morrisons used to sell a Princess cake with the green marzipan. It was soooo delicious. I don't know if I would like it now as I have less of a sweet tooth, but I have fond memories.

eandz13 · 28/07/2023 18:47

Ginger cake and lemon drizzle. The only two types of cake I like!

TerfTalking · 28/07/2023 19:00

Pretty much all cake:

lemon drizzle
M&S cafe carrot
Bakewell tart (does that count?) if not Mr Kipling Bakewell slices
Christmas cake
Date & Walnut, neither ingredients I liked before I was 45
fresh banana bread
fondant fancies
m&s cafe passion fruit cake
m&s apricot Swiss roll

I once had an amazing apple crumble cake in a bookshop/cafe in Budapest. It had pastry around the sides. I've tried to find a similar recipe but can't find one with the pastry so I've just made it without.

I absolutely hate any form of shop bought cakery. I'd rather go without.

I am not trying to get your hopes up, so answering very carefully here!

what do you mean with pastry on the side?
to my Central European brain that doesn’t seem unusual. BUT it’s possible that I’m misunderstanding what you mean.

dogsweetdog · 28/07/2023 19:27

I find it difficult to choose but my favourites are good carrot cake with cream cheese icing (had some at a cafe today and it was sadly crap)
A good chocolate fudge cake (warm with ice cream or cream) or red velvet.

RaraRachael · 28/07/2023 19:28

The base and sides were made of pastry with sponge and apples in the middle with crumble on the top.

midsomermurderess · 28/07/2023 19:32

A good Victoria sponge, with a slightly tart jam, is a wonderful thing. I'm also pretty keen on walnut and coffee. Nigella Lawson also has a recipe for a lovely lemon polenta cake.

Eminybob · 28/07/2023 19:33

A Vicky sponge with real cream and fresh strawberries.

I also enjoy a blackforest gateaux but not had a really good one since the 80s.

dogsweetdog · 28/07/2023 19:36

Has anyone mentioned ginger cake yet?

Oh blimey I forgot ginger cake, we used to have the McVitie's Jamaica ginger cake when I was a kid, it was delicious 😋 have never had a home made one.
