'Been there, done that, got the t-shirt'. For some reason this old overused one just annoys the heck out of me. I think because I always imagine the person saying it thinks they are all kinds of cool and up to date.
For the same reason 'not' at the end of a sentence. 'It's really nice..not'. This feels like it should have died when the last episode of Friends ended

Thinking of it, I haven't heard the phrase 'check your privilege' for some time. Dare I hope it's dying a death?

Unfortunately 'do better' is still doing the rounds. Very imperious rebuke, which those who use it seem to assume puts the automatically in the right. No: it just makes you look a supercilious dick.

Agree with the pp above: 'smashed it' makes me want to reach for my claw hammer.

“They suffer from mental health” and all of the associated. POOR mental health or BAD mental health or suffer WITH their mental health. I just don’t understand why people cannot see/hear that it’s wrong.

Also, “holibobs”.

Exactly!

"I love the bones of him / her."

Presumably "I love him/her" just doesn't fully express the enormity of the love being felt?

I came on here to post just this!

Conjures up a macabre image, as well as putting me in mind of something the matriarch of a crime family might say about the likes of the Kray twins.

‘Get your finger out’

to which the only response should be ‘out of where?’

This is an old maritime expression when ‘powder monkeys’ - packed gunpowder into the ignition chamber of the cannon with their finger as it was quicker - the Gunner shouting ‘get your finger out lad’ with considerable urgency in his voice was the Health and Safety provision of the time.

People that complain about the current politics then when asked why they voted its
I've always voted x party etc.

catrescuelady · 29/07/2023 00:34

Like I say.

A friend of mine says it at the beginning and ending of every sentence Confused

CuttedUpAvocadoPear · 29/07/2023 00:38

Literally (it never is)

Virtually (it rarely related to an online situation)

At the end of the day (why then?)

Pacifically (you mean specifically)

Bought (instead of brought)

I was sat

Smashed needs to die. Especially in the context of preparing avocado pears. Which, of course, always should be cutted up, MN toddler style.

This youngish man on the train was using so many “likes” once that I actually started counting. He managed 17 in three minutes.

That's worse than when I watch Time Team and count how many times Phil Harding says "actually" in any conversation!

CuttedUpAvocadoPear · 29/07/2023 00:47

"You're a braver man than I am, Gunga Din!"

(once was ok, Julian Fellowes, but three times??? 😀😁)

Parvolax · 29/07/2023 00:51

It is what it is

suck it up

Whyishewearingasombero · 29/07/2023 00:51

I absolutely loathe 'if you know, you know'. So smug.

Jellybabies2 · 29/07/2023 00:55

‘Oh my days’ ..how can people just suddenly adopt this stupid saying and keep using it! It’s ridiculous.

I also hate ‘making memories’. Half the time it’s more about making selfies for social media so you can post about all the memories you’re making when in reality you’ve spend most of the time on your phone.

SlippySarah · 29/07/2023 06:25

Wrennie24 · 28/07/2023 22:52

'Making memories'. Just makes me cringe. Memories happen, they are linked to emotion, sound, smell and place. But it's not like baking a bloody cake. Just say 'We had a great day out' not 'Memories made' as you don't know what each person made of it. So annoying and IG and FB are full of it.

100% agree.

I hate the idea that something is only valid if you are going to remember it fondly. Feelings and emotions aren't a like a photo album that you can refer back to.

xPeaceXx · 29/07/2023 06:30

a red lip, instead of ''red lips'' but it made me laugh because we're now saying 'tit' instead of tits. I can't keep up.

I used to know somebody who spoke entirely in cliches. She wasn't a native English speaker so perhaps she thought it made her English sound more fluent but from dawn to dusk, you know what I mean, better late than never, better the devil you know, no pain no gain, here we go again. It made her seem like a robot who'd downloaded idioms. I wanted to bring it up with her but we didn't have that kind of relationship at all!

usernother · 29/07/2023 06:45

I talk to the public for my job. Up until recently 'literally' was the most used word. Now it's 'obviously'. Neither are necessary for the conversations.

Justleaveitblankthen · 29/07/2023 06:50

Dombasle · 28/07/2023 10:34

Literally.

Inserted into a sentence where it is not needed.

I think people who use this don't know the meaning and are using it as, 'Honestly'.

I can never stop the mental image of what they have described.

"I didn't have a pot to pee in, literally"

Cue vision of said person desperate for a wee running all over their house looking for a pot.. 😂

AppleDumplingWithCustard · 29/07/2023 06:57

Basically is another overused one.

LlynTegid · 29/07/2023 07:33

Overuse of 'big', 'literally' and 'like'.

Big birthday- it's still only 24 hours long regardless of your age.
Qualification of sorry- no need in 99% of cases.

Other examples of exaggerated language or inflated language I could think of no doubt.

Coastalcreeksider · 29/07/2023 08:11

I'm Howling - as in laughter - no one I know has ever howled with laughter, they just laugh

That's Awesome and oh cool - always overused

Like - another really annoying word used in conversations with some people

Grinds my gears; boils my piss; iyswim when what is being said couldn’t be more obvious and banal, and in any event why don’t you just make your vapid point clearly.
