How would your dog deal with an intruder?

Ours might not wake up from wherever she's lying with her feet in the air snoring gently.

She could well stand at the top of the stairs barking but will have one eye on her box of toys to decide which present they are worthy of.

Mine would probably nip at their ankles until they said "BOO" to him, then he'd run away squealing. Useless guard dog, but is only seven inches high so he's not kept for his ferocity. 🐕

HollyBollyBooBoo · 26/07/2023 15:00

Rollover and ask for tummy rubs, slope off back to bed if they weren't forthcoming.

Dinopawus · 26/07/2023 15:02

Give them a good wash. Then bark after they've left to complain.

Dinopawus · 26/07/2023 15:04

Also if any burglar took their shoes off to reduce the noise, he'd run off with them.
Honestly, I've lost years of my life looking for shoes.

Nuca · 26/07/2023 15:04

Ours is quite nervous so he would bark and growl at them to start with, and for some reason he's got the deepest, most aggressive sounding bark ever. I think they would think he's a rottie or something and might scare them off if they couldn't see him, until he come round the corner with his toy for them and they realised he's a labradorGrin

We actually found this out when a drunk man managed to try our locked front door then walk in our backdoor after climbing our 6ft wall thinking it was his house and his wife had locked him out.

Our mongrel Romanian Rescue is approximately the size of a springer spaniel but looks like a German Shepherd mixed with a Corgi.

He bolted downstairs from his usual position at the bottom of our bed, cornered the man in our kitchen and from about a meter away from him barked and growled and snapped and generally made himself seem very threatening. So much so the drunk man was pleading with the dog not to kill him.

I'm not sure what he would have done if he had met with a more competent burglar but he is a very good guard dog when it comes to lost drunk men.

mondaytosunday · 26/07/2023 15:06

One of my dogs would bark and growl but not much more than that. But I understand the noise of a dog is enough to put most off.

elQuintoConyo · 26/07/2023 15:08

Woof her head off! Bare teeth, bite hands/legs/feet. She´s a rescue who doesnt like men!

BarrelOfOtters · 26/07/2023 16:08

Ours completely ignored the fact we had someone in doing some fairly noisy work - drilling, hammering etc etc. Until he started whistling...then all hell broke loose....and finally a slipper present.

Bark initially upon discovering a stranger in the house but would soon quieten down if offered a nice scratch on the head and chin.

We were burgled a couple of years ago and assume this is what happened. Such a relief that they didn't harm her though. That would have made the experience FAR more upsetting.

CurlewKate · 26/07/2023 16:20

Probably show them where the best stuff is. But I wouldn't want it any other way. Can't imagine anything worse than a guard dog type.

lightinthebox · 26/07/2023 16:25

Ours would jump up and demand to be stroked.

However we were in the park and completely surprised to see a drug dealer and clearly high clientele (not weed) once. It must be the smell because she barked and howled at them and was very protective, her whole body language changed and I’ve never seen her like that.

Idratherbepaddleboarding · 26/07/2023 16:26

He’s give them a few whispered woods then bring them a present 🙄.

BlackberryTart · 26/07/2023 16:26

Our Goldie does a great job of sounding very scary - like a PP you'd think he was a Rottweiler from outside.
He would bark and bark and bark when he heard them but not sure about if they got inside. Probably get over excited and offer him his best toy.

Mylobsterteapot · 26/07/2023 16:26

Bark like a dog twice his size.

Idratherbepaddleboarding · 26/07/2023 16:26

*woofs

cinnamonfrenchtoast · 26/07/2023 16:27

Bark, which is what I want him to do as he sounds a lot more ferocious than he is!

AdoraBell · 26/07/2023 16:29

My German Shepherd would growl bearing teeth if I feel threatened. When I’m comfortable she’s like teddy bear.

TeleTropes · 26/07/2023 16:29

Aggressively barking, loud and incessantly - maybe mixed with some growling. If approached, she would back away and continue barking. If they got too close she’s probably cower and cry. She’s all talk.

CalmYourThunder · 26/07/2023 16:31

Our dogs bark if someone farts 3 miles away, so based on that, they would bark a lot. Hopefully attack the intruders and send them on their way.

Lynca · 26/07/2023 16:32

My male dog would put his big boy bark on, backed up by my female with her hackles up, and between them they'd bark the house down. But I imagine if the burglar took a step towards them they'd turn and bolt up the stairs.
That's all I'd want to be honest, enough to alert my husband and I and hopefully make the intruder scarper, but not put themselves in harms way.

ThisWormHasTurned · 26/07/2023 16:35

She would probably go for them. She’s shown aggression in the past. We have done loads of behavioural therapy work and she’s much better out on the lead now but she still barks at the postman/delivery drivers/bin men and if anyone dared to enter our home without permission I think she’d launch herself at them 😬 house is gated and has a ‘beware of the dog’ sign!

Rogue1001MNer · 26/07/2023 16:37

Like many of you, growl ferociously

But hopeful for a belly rub

dearJayne · 26/07/2023 16:38

2 would welcome them with open arms, one would bark at them before falling in love and welcoming them with open arms and the other would attack them.

They would all bark when someone approaches the door.

spiderlight · 26/07/2023 16:39

Mine would bark the place down as they were breaking in, and then go and find a teddy to show them and go through their bags and eat their sandwiches while they were burgling us.
