How would your dog deal with an intruder?

Ours might not wake up from wherever she's lying with her feet in the air snoring gently.

She could well stand at the top of the stairs barking but will have one eye on her box of toys to decide which present they are worthy of.

My rescue would bark then probably sit and wait for them to give her a treat, after which she’d be their friend for life 🙄

oobladay · 27/07/2023 15:00

Would bark to any sudden appearance/noise and then jump up at them gleefully for a fuss/belly rub 😂

Also if any burglar took their shoes off to reduce the noise, he'd run off with them.
Honestly, I've lost years of my life looking for shoes.

Ha 😆

At our house, if the burglar removed their shoes, one of our dogs (sadly passed away this spring 😪) would have pulled their socks of with his teeth before licking the burglar to death.

The other would bark terrifyingly till the burglar retreated. She hates strangers but wouldn't go anywhere near an intruder - even if they came bearing treats, as she's not fussed about food.

Mine would bark his head off, then smother you with slobbery kisses once you're in.
Unless you threw him a few cubes of cheese, then he'd give you a guided tour of the place and help you pack what you fancied taking.

Floralnomad · 27/07/2023 15:36

Bark and then bark some more

madeofcheeze · 27/07/2023 15:41

Our lab would bark the house down and sound menacing. If anyone would get in the lab might just eat them, as he's very fear aggressive. Our border collie would help by rounding the burglar into a corner.

GroutScrubberExtraordinaire · 27/07/2023 15:43

Not especially well, I think.

He would definately bark and growl a LOT. He's a big dog with a very loud and deep bark and a serious sounding growl. He is also likely to jump/lunge at them in an attempt to push them back. If I was present and also clearly alarmed, I suspect that might even trigger him to bite.

He's not bitten anyone before (or even come close to trying to), but he's a naturally wary and suspicious dog and he very much uses my behaviour as a cue on how he should react. If I were scared or agitated, I could imagine that may push him into doing it.

But, he's a live animal so his reaction may well surprise even me!

Mine egg each other on - large and big dogs and working dogs - fully trained until said burglar wet themselves. No way would they not defend us. They follow us around the house at night if we get up and go off like a rocket at anyone approaching the house.

Wolf/mal/husky Cross

Yeah, I mean that has to be very near the top of the list of 'Dog Breed Mixes a Burgler Least Wants to Find the Other Side of the Door'

My second dog helped convict a burglar.
I was living with my parents at the time.
The house was thoroughly burgled, back door forced open, stuff taken and smashed. Dog didn't prevent this and was probably in her basket very unhappy, possibly even snarling as they went past but not actually attacking... But with everyone out of the house she would have had no cue from us.
However to the side of the house is a bit of waste land and a thicket of bushes in which a freshly discarded glove was found with teeth tears in it and fresh blood on. The police took this and the DNA matched that of a known local criminal who was arrested and charged with the burglary!
So it seems the burglar got too close/ attempted to touch her, and got bitten.
Don't know if the arrest led to a conviction, but wow- dog did good and the police actually did some policing too!
Just so relieved they didn't harm her! It could have been much worse.

PimpMyFridge · 27/07/2023 15:59

Catch a burglar that should say... Dunno if a conviction was secured

Deathraystare · 27/07/2023 16:24

Some of these dogs sound absolutely lovely (if a little lacking in protecting home and owners!). And I say that being more of a cat person.

Addymontgomeryfan · 27/07/2023 16:42

Our big 'scary' breed would probably help them carry the loot, not sure about the fluffy cute looking one, she's got multiple personalities so would depend on her mood l.

Our dogs bark if someone farts 3 miles away, so based on that, they would bark a lot. Hopefully attack the intruders and send them on their way.

This made me laugh! 😂

ginsparkles · 27/07/2023 16:47

I suspect ours would make herself pretty intimidating. She barks loudly whenever anyone comes to the house. If we weren't comfy, she would sense it and bark, growl and show her teeth. She will do these things if she's scared or anxious. So I think an intruder would get short shrift.

When we had building work done we always introduced new people to her before the started working.

MmaRra · 27/07/2023 16:57

If we were at home? The burglars would probably not get in at all or not get out in one piece or alive.

If we were out? The burglars would probably be welcomed as company.

Giant, fearless breed. Guarder of their people rather than property. Easily feels lonesome.

Whichwhatnow · 27/07/2023 17:07

Mine has passed away now but (considering she was a smallish dog) she had a very intimidating deep, loud bark which she liked to use, a lot. Hopefully that would have sent them running scared before they actually got in.

If they did get in she would be transformed into a wriggly, waggy softy begging for tummy rubs and pats and quite possibly attempting to hump their legs with the sheer excitement of it all.

gogomoto · 27/07/2023 17:12

Ddog is a little unpredictable in how he treats guests welcomed in (we know and obviously take precautions) I suspect any intruder may require a trip to a&e. Old grumpy dog who protects his family a little too much!

gogomoto · 27/07/2023 17:18

Oh but he's usually five with women so female burglars would be fine I suspect, he just really isn't keen on tall, make, bearded, hats, any motor vehicles, loud noises, tradespeople (except female plumber, he liked her)

Girliefriendlikespuppies · 27/07/2023 17:33

I think my dog would go nuts tbh, he's a terrier and a pretty good guard dog I think.

As long as the burglars didn't actually see him the noise might put them off 😂

BobBobBobbing · 27/07/2023 18:46

Dh and ds2 were once very late back from a football match. I'd gone to bed with DDog. They crept in the house at 1am and DDog was woofing and growling til he realised it was them. He's a big lad with a very loud and deep woof! Having been mouthed by him when he first came to live with us it wouldnt be a positive experience for the burglar.

Vitriolinsanity · 27/07/2023 20:22

The dog would let off a few warning shot barks.

Dcat would do much more damage.
