How would your dog deal with an intruder?

Ours might not wake up from wherever she's lying with her feet in the air snoring gently.

She could well stand at the top of the stairs barking but will have one eye on her box of toys to decide which present they are worthy of.

Probably just growl and bark at them.

That said, if I let someone in, he's lovely, but if he heard a noise in the night and encountered an intruder, I can't promise he wouldn't bite.

SquashPenguin · 26/07/2023 17:29

Sneeze in their face, preferably when they have their eyes/ mouth open.

Papernotplastic · 26/07/2023 17:31

Current dog? Lots of excited barking. Previous dog? I’d have come down in the morning to find blood smears and the odd severed finger.

SeriousAlligator · 26/07/2023 17:31

Wolf/mal/husky Cross. I'm fully confident she'd come (at least) close to killing them.

Hummusanddipdip · 26/07/2023 17:31

If he wakes up he'd probably still be sat in his bed watching them and waiting to be let out for a pee...

Old men of almost 17 don't really make great guard dogs 🤣

Frequency · 26/07/2023 17:35

@BorneoBound That's pretty much my dog. He knows when something is "normal" and when it is not. He's fine with visitors, even ones who just enter the home. DDs friends are always walking in without knocking. The ones he knows he gets very excited by and opens the inside door to greet them. The ones he doesn't know he ignores.

My BIL, who my dog had never met, walked in uninvited when I was asleep in bed after a night shift. He bought my DDs home but they went straight upstairs. BIL invited himself into the living room to meet the dog. My dog immediately brought him a toy and started playing.

Until we were actually broken into I'd never seen him show aggression to anything. I was as surprised by him as the would-be intruders were.

Zipps · 26/07/2023 17:38

One of ours is a little dog with a massive attitude and a big bark and not afraid of anything so there would be blood. Our other dog is bigger but a total softie and loves babies and children and most people in general. But if any man he doesn't know goes within two feet of me he turns into one of the dragons from game of thrones so it would bye bye burglar.

weegiemum · 26/07/2023 17:45

Bark like a scary guard dog as they walked up the bath, keep barking as they entered the house then lick them to death!

LER83 · 26/07/2023 17:46

Honestly, if the intruder did anything to interact with the dog, like put his hand out etc he would bite. He would definitely wake the entire road with his ridiculously loud and aggressive bark and growling! He is fine with walking past people on the street, ok with people coming to do the door, just as long as they don't interact for longer then 3 seconds! He will be ok with postman giving me a parcel, but if he tries to chat or say hello to the dog then the growling starts! He's a cocker spaniel - a broken one!

Newmum738 · 26/07/2023 17:51

Mine did nothing when it happened! She was asleep and stayed asleep 🙈 Definitely not a guard dog!!

tinymeteor · 26/07/2023 17:29

Depends. Does the intruder have a biscuit?

😀

My heart sinks when I hear people describe their dogs as "protective"

Depends how
My childhood GSD was protective. As in if I screamed, she would come running to me and guard. I was allowed to walk her on my own as she was so mild and friendly but if I needed help, she would protect me
I screamed one day in fear in the garden and she jumped from a window to come and find me, broke her leg landing on the patio and dragged herself to me
A burglar would have been fine provided I wasn't yelling!

LaurieFairyCake · 26/07/2023 18:03

All 3 would go NUTS

However, leading on this 'pack jaunt' would be the worlds SMALLEST DOG with the WIMPIEST bark ever

But she thinks she's dead 'ard - and is right out front in the barking at other dogs and leaves scenarios 😂

How would your dog deal with an intruder?
Chesneyhawkes1 · 26/07/2023 18:04

One would be overjoyed to see a new "friend"

One would bark and growl and kick off.

Arewehumanorarewecupboards · 26/07/2023 18:08

One would sleep through an intruder, he wouldn’t wake for an earthquake.
One would wake the whole village to say that we have an intruder. She’s lovely and has never been aggressive but she is extremely loud.

The cat is an arsehole.

TribeD · 26/07/2023 18:11

He'd go bananas because "NEW FRIEEEEEND", dash off, find a toy, frantically wag his whole back end, lie down, expecting belly rubs.

Utterly useless, although he he would make some noise clattering about and yowling excitedly.

MillWood85 · 26/07/2023 18:12

My cocker would go mental. He's very vocal if he hears any noise at night. And he can sound scary - the postman has legged it on a few occasions.

Our sprocker would pee on the floor in terror, then run and hide. She's not the bravest girl, bless her.

Chesneyhawkes1 · 26/07/2023 18:13

@CurlewKate I'd describe one of mine as protective. He's never shown aggression unless I've been under threat. So I'm guessing he reads my body language.

My ex was physically violent and that's the only time he's shown aggression to a human. He grabbed his arm when he went to hit me. And I'm glad he did.

I don't believe he's a nervous dog at all. He's a one person dog and I'm his person.

CoffeeDrinkerLatte · 26/07/2023 18:13

Woof, then run and grab a treat theyve hidden somewhere to show off and be told they’re the best girl ever wow what a clever girl.

Fizzology · 26/07/2023 18:15

elQuintoConyo · 26/07/2023 15:08

Woof her head off! Bare teeth, bite hands/legs/feet. She´s a rescue who doesnt like men!

We have this same dog.

Danielle9891 · 26/07/2023 18:20

I've a spaniel and she'd be really happy to see them and bring them her toy. She loves our postman and window cleaner.

babygirl88 · 26/07/2023 18:21

My old shar-pei would attack anyone who approached without us greeting them at the door. If we greeted, he was good as gold. He was an excellent guard dog. Once we were at a wedding all day and our next door neighbour who was in and out of our house daily had a key and was going to feed and walk him. He loved our neighbour. He tried to get in the door for over an hour and we had to just leave in the end. The neighbour came in with us as we arrived home and the dog was happy to see him, tail wagging and licking him lol

strongcupofTea · 26/07/2023 18:22

Mine would bark and act all tough until they got in and then they'd sniff them and go sit back down. That's the trouble when they're used to workmen coming in doing repairs.

Sewingdufus · 26/07/2023 18:26

If they were friendly she would jump all over them and probably lick them. If they shouted at me or threatened me then she would put herself between them and me.

Duckafuk · 26/07/2023 18:29

Lab owner - as expected when we had an attempted burglary he slept through it 🙄😴🤤. BUT when I was grabbed by a strange man ( as in a stranger to me ) and I did a mini scream when we were out walking in the woods my daft lab went all Rambo , snarled and barked and got himself inbetween us .
