How long has Aldi been going, I'm amazed this question still pops up every couple of weeks like it's a novelty.

It's just a cheap supermarket, most people buy whatever they normally buy. Much of the non-refrigerated stuff is a rebadged version of a well known brand.

Yes but stock changes, new stuff is added and it's good to see if there's anything new I might like. I'm happy reading !

How could I forget - the party ring dupes taste like original party rings.
Flowers are excellent value.
Fruit & veg doesn’t last too well. Saying that, wonky blueberries (and other fruits) are worth getting a

We like the big chocolate rice cakes, the bacon is good, 5% fat chicken mince or meatballs, kids ice lollies, sticky chicken skewers and 49p for a packet of sanitary towels! It was £3 for a pack in Tesco!

crazeekat · 26/07/2023 01:11

norpak butter, was alway a lurpak
fan but prices stopped
me buying, and now i will not go back.
also aldis washing machine liquid, i buy the green and it is just as good as any other branded but fraction of the price. so is their bleach, washing up liquid, softener, tin foil, toilet roll, all that kind of stuff is defo a saving. and just as good if not better than popular brands

For us;
olives
bread/baps
cured meats
hummus/fancy coleslaws
69p individual chilled coffee drinks
dog harness/leads/biscuits
wheatabix dupes
the special frozen desserts can be lovely

BUT
so far all ice creams have been nasty!

Really?? Giannis Scottish dairy ice cream salted Caramel is amazing!

strongcupofTea · 26/07/2023 02:12

Their basic white loaf is really tasty compared to hovis and unlike kingsmill It's a lot softer and doesn't dry out as quick. I think it's 79p

@Seddon we've only had an Aldi near us in the last couple of years, so it's a relative novelty to use it. I'm guessing this is the same for a lot of people, seeing as it has been nowhere near a national supermarket chain for a while.

That, plus people are usually pretty loyal to the supermarket they've always used, and it takes something to tempt them away from that - especially if it's not as close as their usual one.

And don't forget, for many years, both Aldi and Lidl were seen as 'cheap and nasty' - there was a lot of snobbery about using them, and the people who shopped there. It took the recession, first, and now the cost of living crisis, to persuade people to try them.

But the way both chains have exploded into the British supermarket scene must tell you something about the quality and range of their products. Once you've tried either of them, you realise that they're not just about selling cheap stuff.

Olives and feta stuffed peppers
Chorizo sausages
Sourdough pizzas (much better than tesco/Lidl)
Buttermilk chicken thigh burgers
Sourdough bread
Hot cloth cleanser and other beauty dupes
Herbs and spices
