How long do you leave your tea to brew?

My husband always says I like strong weak tea and it winds me up because I like strong tea, with only a splash of milk. He's adamant it is strong weak tea because although there's barely any milk the tea bag is only in there for like 30 seconds (I do squeeze the life out of it though!) surely people don't spend 5/10 minutes brewing the tea bag before putting milk in and taking it out?

How long do you leave your tea to brew?!

As long as I can be bothered! Probably 1-2 mins, and then squeeze the hell out of it. DP leaves his for 4-5 mins

lousyatchoosingnames · 25/07/2023 10:34

Yes 2 or 3 mins, I do sometimes make them straight after boiling if I'm doing a round, but it's not as nice.

RockGirl · 25/07/2023 10:34

I leave it for 4 minutes. I use a timer.

I also don't squeeze the bag, at all.

Kinsters · 25/07/2023 10:35

4 minutes here.

ReeseWitherfork · 25/07/2023 10:35

Thirty seconds.

Unless I forget, then could be up to two hours or more.

GrumpyPanda · 25/07/2023 10:37

Loose leaf tea. 3 minutes. Gets bitter if much longer. Shorter than that and it's coloured water.

Neekoh · 25/07/2023 10:37

4 to 5 minutes, and don't squeeze the bag. But mostly I prefer leaves.

doingitalllagain · 25/07/2023 10:52

Right I'm making a cup of tea and setting a timer for 4 minutes. I'm expecting big things.

Milky tea isn't weak!

CurlewKate · 25/07/2023 10:57

3 minutes-with a timer!

tobee · 25/07/2023 11:18

About 5 minutes here. I use a teapot (and a cosy) about 999/1000 which makes a difference. If I use a bag in mug about 30 seconds

YakChewCrumbs · 25/07/2023 11:20

As long as it takes me to fish the bag out. I think it gets bitter/ tannin-y very quickly.

Qilin · 25/07/2023 11:20

We use tea leaves and a pot.
After boiling water is added we leave it for around 3-4 minutes before pouring.

If using a tea bag I leave it around 2-3 minutes as seems to brew a little quicker. I don't squeeze the bag other than to take some excess water out when lifting it.

Utini · 25/07/2023 11:23

I set a timer for 90 seconds - I don't like it brewed for too long but only like a small amount of milk. DP will leave for 20-30 minutes and then put in loads of milk

Strength (brewing time) and milkiness are two different things though!

Happysunshineyellow · 25/07/2023 11:25

Heston Blumenthal says 3 mins so thats what i do. Its perfect but I hate weak tea.

PollyPaintsFlowers · 25/07/2023 11:30

I set a timer for four minutes but it's still not strong enough. I miss the tea bags from 20 years ago when 2-3 minutes were plenty

AnnoyedByAlfieBear · 25/07/2023 11:30

8 minutes. Me and my dad experimented a few years ago to get the best taste. 😂

ginghamstarfish · 25/07/2023 11:33

30 seconds moving the teabag around with a spoon. I think the taste alters so much if left for minutes, and not in a good way (in my opinion).

Neekoh · 25/07/2023 11:46

It depends on what sort of tea it is, as well.

unvillage · 25/07/2023 11:48

That's weak, non-milky tea. Strength and milkiness are different. I drink loose leaf tea and brew for 3-4 minutes usually. And never muddle it around with a teaspoon.

AnnaNims · 25/07/2023 11:51

About 5 seconds, it barely tastes of tea at all and has to be decaf. No milk.

I can’t stand strong tea.

chatw0o0 · 25/07/2023 11:51

5 minutes, after watching this a few years ago;

(How you've been making tea WRONG your entire life - BBC).

I watched that too. Always 5 minutes for me since watching that!

MyMachineAndMe · 25/07/2023 13:22

Sorry op but your tea sounds... not very nice! Leave the bag in the boiling water for 5 minutes or so and then remove but do not squeeze it because it makes it taste bitter. Then add a splash of milk.

5adayincludeswine · 25/07/2023 13:26

My DP is a tea taster and tells me it’s 4.5 mins, gently squeeze bag (do not mash) - I hate the stuff though!!
