How long do you leave your tea to brew?

My husband always says I like strong weak tea and it winds me up because I like strong tea, with only a splash of milk. He's adamant it is strong weak tea because although there's barely any milk the tea bag is only in there for like 30 seconds (I do squeeze the life out of it though!) surely people don't spend 5/10 minutes brewing the tea bag before putting milk in and taking it out?

How long do you leave your tea to brew?!

I don't leave the teabag in at all. I put it in the cup, pour boiling water over it, stir it round with a spoon, push it up against the sides, then squeeze it as I take it out. It tastes much fresher that way and isn't weak. It might have less tannin though.

I think this is the worst post in this thread although happy to be proven wrong. You don't like tea. "Fresher"!! Why do you even bother 😆

4 minutes, do not squeeze bag (and usually use loose leaf tea in any case)

Doingmybest12 · 26/07/2023 02:53

Are people leaving a normal tea bag (not one cup) in a normal size mug for all these minutes before adding milk? I can see in a pot of water or with loose leaf this is needed but in a mug with usual tea bag I basically add boiled water, add milk in as long as it takes me to get it out of the fridge, stir it, squash it and fish it out when it looks right. I often find tea made in a pot a bit cold now but prefer a tea in a pot in a cafe as part of the ritual, always disappointed with a bag in a cup then.

Right I'm making a cup of tea and setting a timer for 4 minutes. I'm expecting big things.

What was the verdict?!

I put a teabag and sweetener in a mug, pour boiling water in, then chuck the teabag out before I put the milk in.

You need to make sure you warm the pot whilst the kettle is boiling. Then tip that water away and make the tea with freshly boiled water. This should prevent the tea in the pot cooling down much.

I’d call 30 seconds a waste of a bag. 3 mins and squeeze the bag.

I reuse the bag 🫣

kikisparks · 26/07/2023 13:24

30 seconds and loads of (oat) milk, I basically like slightly tea flavoured hot oat milk 🤣

TonTonMacoute · 26/07/2023 13:26

Loose leaf tea (2/3 Assam 1/3 Darjeeling) in a porcelain tea pot, brewed for 4 minutes.

I want a decent cup of tea so it’s worth the extra few minutes to make it perfectly every time.

StartSWagaintomorrow · 26/07/2023 13:26

I get what you mean I’m the same it’s strong tea not stewed tea with a dash of skimmed milk. For me it’s teabag in 4 turns clockwise and then 4 turns anti clockwise then teabag out. Nobody can make tea for me apart from my husband.

Deadringer · 26/07/2023 13:27

I make it in a pot and brew it for at least 10 minutes, maybe 15. I like it strong but milky.

StartSWagaintomorrow · 26/07/2023 13:27

Bone China thin cup or porcelain thin cup acceptable also has to be a white cup or mug.

newrubylane · 26/07/2023 13:29

He's right. Your tea isn't strong, it's just not milky, there's a difference. Strength is how long it has brewed for. The stronger the better for me, with the tiniest dot of milk.

I would too 😂

Missingthegore · 26/07/2023 13:42

I am an animal
I boil the kettle, warm the cup, tea bag in leave for a few min, milk in and leave the teabag in the cup for the whole cup which is drank while scalding hot to the point a gastroenterologist who has witnessed this behaviour (gastro ward manager) has warned me about it. (It's fine I've been scoped all good that end)

caringcarer · 26/07/2023 14:08

I make a nice pot of tea and leave tea bag in for 4 minutes before I pour it out. I have a small bone china cup and saucer and have a second small cup too.

I do like tea strong, but just not with lots of tannin. It's still strong, if you squeeze the teabag before discarding it. Many years ago I saw someone in a cafe making my tea and she did just that. I thought "That's not going to taste good" but to my surprise it tasted better. Ever since then I've done it that way.
