How long do you leave your tea to brew?

My husband always says I like strong weak tea and it winds me up because I like strong tea, with only a splash of milk. He's adamant it is strong weak tea because although there's barely any milk the tea bag is only in there for like 30 seconds (I do squeeze the life out of it though!) surely people don't spend 5/10 minutes brewing the tea bag before putting milk in and taking it out?

How long do you leave your tea to brew?!

6 minutes and I use a timer

jellybe · 25/07/2023 13:33

3-4 minutes of brewing in the pot. Use loss leaf - don't know if that makes any difference to bags.

LaFemmeAnglaise · 25/07/2023 13:33

Anything under 4 minutes is a waste of a teabag!

Eileen101 · 25/07/2023 13:37

2 tea bags - 5 mins
1 tea bag - a good 10 mins.

I like it strong.

Catspyjamas17 · 25/07/2023 13:40

Regular black tea, quick squeeze of the bag and a good stir.

Pukka herbal tea - about 15 minutes.

InMySpareTime · 25/07/2023 13:42

I make a pot (about a litre) with loose leaf tea and forget about it leave it to brew for quite a while. With a tea cosy it's fine for up to an hour, then it starts to go tepid.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 25/07/2023 13:48

I give the teabag a squeeze but fish it straight out.
Can’t bear very strong/stewed, tannin-y tea.

I don’t have milk in mine though, which I dare say makes a difference. It tastes vile to me with milk in.

SuePine69 · 25/07/2023 13:53

I don't leave the teabag in at all. I put it in the cup, pour boiling water over it, stir it round with a spoon, push it up against the sides, then squeeze it as I take it out. It tastes much fresher that way and isn't weak. It might have less tannin though.

FloofCloud · 25/07/2023 14:18

Water in
Squeeze bag x 3/4 times
Get bag out ... it has no right being there after 4 squeezes and 5 seconds post water
Half a teaspoon of milk ... unless it's earl grey or herbal .. then no milk

Zippedydodah · 25/07/2023 14:35

I wave the bag over the top, barely dunk it. I only drink very weak tea.

8 minutes. Me and my dad experimented a few years ago to get the best taste. 😂

I'd be ready for my next cup by then! ... surely it's COLD! 🥶😱

XDownwiththissortofthingX · 25/07/2023 15:07

Depends how distracted I am after pouring. I try to keep it to 2 or 3 minutes, but if I get caught up in something it can sit there for upwards of 20, and yes, I still drink it because I don't take milk and it's usually still at a perfectly drinkable temperature.

The head-rush and palpitations afterwards are something else.

BiddyPop · 25/07/2023 15:09

About 10 seconds and don't squeeze the bag, with lots of milk.

But when on scout camp, I'll manage gallons of Leaders tea, which is 4 bags in the pit, brewed on stove for an extra 5 minutes with gas lit, then poured. But it's the only place I drink very strong tea.

I do get accused of drinking hot milk at work....

weleasewoderick23 · 25/07/2023 15:09

You'll all hate me for this: I use 2 teabags in a pint mug ( 3 for the first of the day) and put the milk in first
< dons hard hat>

wutheringkites · 25/07/2023 15:11

If the teabag is decent, about 4 minutes. If I'm out and am given a cheap teabag, I'll often leave it in.

user64827777 · 25/07/2023 15:26

3 minutes. I have a tea timer to remind me.

Natsku · 25/07/2023 15:33

Not long at all, probably between 30 seconds and a minute, I don't like bitter tea (I don't use milk at all which I expect covers up the bitterness somewhat)

Ourladycheesusedatum · 25/07/2023 15:44

I make tea a number of ways, you'll all hate me now.
First put tea bag in mug (rarely a cup) add water, splosh around for 15 seconds, remove, add milk.
Second, put milk and tea bag in mug, add water, leave 30 second, sploosh around and squeeze bag until correct colour is achieved (strangely when I do this one DP always says lovely cuppa)
Third, tea bag, water, leave somewhere around 5 minutes, fish out teabag add milk.

At a mates house am always asked how I like my tea, I genuinely dont care as long as it has some milk in it. You could stand a spoon in it or make dishwater tea, so long as theres milk, I will drink it.

ohsuzannah · 25/07/2023 16:53

4 minutes 😂

NadjaCravensworth1 · 25/07/2023 23:06

About 10 seconds and a squeeze. I hate strong tea

unvillage · 26/07/2023 00:12

Some of you just like hot milk 😆

Catsmere · 26/07/2023 00:39

I’d call 30 seconds weak, too!

I’ve never timed it but I probably leave it about 5 minutes. How much milk I put in varies, but I don’t like it too milky.

TakingTheHorseToFrance · 26/07/2023 00:51

About a minute. I squeeze the bag but leave it in the cup, and add milk and drink. I'm shite at making tea and oh makes a really good cuppa cause he leaves it longer but also keeps the bag in while drinking it.

Is it not cold by then?

Nat6999 · 26/07/2023 01:16

My mum always used to mash a pot of tea as we all sat down for a meal & then we had a cup as we finished. I'm just finishing my last box of teabags & I'm going to go back to loose leaf tea, I'm scrounging my mum's tea caddy I can remember from my childhood & the bettaware man plastic spoon she always used to measure the tea.
