Holiday makers at it in hot tub...

We have a couple of converted barns as holiday rentals. Before anyone starts, no we can't get residential permission on them and no we don't make much money at all especially now the business electricity is so high (and no we don't get help for that). Anyway, they have good sized gardens and are not too far from the sea so attract families with small children this time of year. They also have hot tubs. Last night was the first warm and sunny evening since last check in and guests in one cottage (two adults) were having sex very loudly in their hot tub at 9pm (along with loud music). I'm not sure if they thought they couldn't be heard because a hot tub is pretty loud if you are in it. Or maybe they just don't care but hot tub noise is NOT loud to surrounding gardens, fields and houses and we can quite often hear people's slightly raised conversations in them. There are not many buildings or traffic noises around to drown out noises. I shuffled our kids off to bed pretty sharpish. The guests know we live on site when they book and have heard our neighbours kids during the day because their garden is almost next to theirs and also sound travels really, really well here. Anyway this has given us the ick big time. They are here until the weekend. I want to say something to them so it doesn't put off other guests. OH does not think we should (he also wants to get rid of all hot tubs asap!) and has dragged himself to work as per usual so it's just me and the kids. WWYD?

What would happen if you said any repeat and you will be asked to leave?

Sensibletrousers · 25/07/2023 14:02

Human soup. Vom.

Winterday1991 · 25/07/2023 14:07

I think you should leave it and not say anything they will be gone within a few days.

buzzlightyearsgloves · 25/07/2023 10:49

What did you think would happen with hot tubs? They are called sex ponds for a reason.

Gross... 🤢
I know they can be bleached out, but the thought of other people's secretions on that tub is just nasty.

LittleMissUnreasonable · 25/07/2023 14:09

Have you decided what you're going to do OP?The longer you leave it. The more awkward it will be I think. You could just send a message " issuing a reminder about noise levels when out in the hot tub as sound travels and other guests need to be respected." Send it to them only, but make it sound like a blanket statement that you're sending to the other accommodation as well, hopefully they won't be dense enough to miss the hint.

AppleKatie · 25/07/2023 14:14

All these people who think hot tubs are disgusting because people have gasp sex in them also sleep in beds in holiday lets and hotels I assume?

One being more grim than the other is just bonkers.

absolutely it should be drained/cleaned/maintained appropriately but beyond that it’s considerably less grim than people having sex in a garden hammock which doesn’t necessarily get washed weekly 🤣

The noise is the issue here not the action and I think tactfully letting them know that sound carries is the way to go.

Ethelwulf · 25/07/2023 14:15

The thought of using a hot tub which has been a public, shared facility pretty much grosses me out. Quite apart from the thought of the potential residue from bath-time frolics, unless they are rigorously disinfected, they are a breeding ground for numerous bacteria, one of which is the cause of Legionnaire's disease.
I wouldn't have installed them in the first place, and quite understand your husband's desire to get rid of them. Perhaps the first major job on your list for when things are quiet, or if you have a closed season. As for speaking to the guests in question, I wouldn't bother. OK, so they were noisy, but I'd bet they're not the first to have "done it" . You just didn't hear the others.
I'd guess that bathing in a multi-user hot tub is up there with eating shared pub snacks (peanuts/nibbles) from a bar counter as regards a healthy pastime. Not for me, thanks.

FrenchandSaunders · 25/07/2023 14:17

@breakfastofchampions that's brilliant you do that and it does sound exhausting ... hope you are making enough money for it to be worthwhile.

I'm pretty sure the lodges I use don't do this to the hot tubs ... we've stayed on site before leaving and I've never seen them being drained (or hoovered 😁)

ew even just the hair and skin is grim enough after a week. I mean it’s sanitised Bari and skin because of all the chlorine in there but still. We don’t really make enough atm as most of our money seems to go on business electricity. If only the people who converted them had spent their money on solar panels instead of hot tubs…

End of the day they are paying good money to stay there.

I'd say nothing I wouldn't appreciate anyone confronting me over this. It's a holiday rental goes with the terroirty

Moveoverdarlin · 25/07/2023 14:24

I wouldn’t say anything. This is exactly what goes on in holiday rentals.

Elsiebear90 · 25/07/2023 14:28

I don’t understand what the big deal is, every hot tub I’ve used at accommodation had the water replaced and was cleaned after each guest, so shouldn’t be a hygiene issue.

If no other guest complained about the noise or saw anything indecent then I think you’re making a mountain out of a molehill, I would assume a lot of your guests have and will have sex in the hot tubs because it’s what they’re known for.

Iwant2move · 25/07/2023 14:33

I have properties with hot tubs. I can assure you, they are drained, scrubbed, filters cleaned, refilled and chemical balanced after every guest (which is 3-4 days). If a guest is staying longer than four days, we empty, clean and refill for them. Spare chemicals and instructions are left with the guests to add daily.
Guests regularly have sex in them and pee in them. They are grim to clean but are thoroughly clean for the next guests. We can tell by the colour of the water and the smell that your kids are pissing in them.
If you get rid of your hot tubs, your bookings will drop considerably. Put a waiver in place for guests to sign and include rules about noise and behaviour around other guests and your children.
I have another property without a hot tub but a sea view and it is free for most of the summer holidays. All booking requests want a hot tub.

Medusaismyhero · 25/07/2023 14:35

I knew this would lead to a "sex pond" pile on. I genuinely don't believe the majority of hot tubs are used for sex. DH and I have stayed in several places with hot tubs and never had sex in one. Why on earth would you when there's a perfectly good bed?!

Obviously it happens sometimes (as the OP has found out) but people also sometimes have sex in train bathrooms and on airplanes - doesn't mean everyone's at it!

Talkwhilstyouwalk · 25/07/2023 14:37

cocksstrideintheevening · 25/07/2023 10:34

And this is why I don't go in hot tubs

Exactly. Hot tubs in holiday rentals are bound to be used for this. I wouldn't say anything but would get rid of them!

miraveille · 25/07/2023 14:41

This makes zero sense. If the hot tub is cleaned and drained after each guest, it's not more dirty to use than using the bed that the previous guest used, with perhaps the same sheets on that have been through a hot wash. Yes they jizzed all over the sheets as well but they've been cleaned .
I personally hate hot tubs but the pearl clutching is irrational!!

Monster80 · 25/07/2023 14:43

Surely this just becomes a note in the welcome pack ‘We understand you’re here to have fun (in all its forms), and want you to enjoy your stay. However, please be aware that all types of noise travel from the hot tubs and is heard very clearly by other visitors and our neighbours’.

CreationNat1on · 25/07/2023 14:48

Maybe just a gentle reminder:

Please be mindful of noise levels, this is a family run facility and we would appreciate your continued consideration of other guests and owners and family. We hope you enjoy your stay. Thank you and kind regards, name.

breakfastofchampions · 25/07/2023 14:53

I think those of you that have said to amend the welcome pack to remind people noise travels are probably right. However the people who are the most inconsiderate rarely read it so we are back to wondering. I have plans to change the layout a bit which might help the sound as well as make people more mindful there are neighbours. Maybe I will pop a not on the bottom of the hot tub rules next to the tub.

So just because they're paying money to stay there, it means they have to subject other people to their noisy sex outside. I'm sure you'd have different to say if your DC we're playing in the garden outside and had to listen to that.

I'm probably one of the most frugal people and getting my money's worth out of things, but there's no excuse to go completely feral in someone's accomodation just because you paid for it.

AndrexPuppy · 25/07/2023 14:57

Further proof that hot tubs are revolting things.

Arrrgh am I the only person who thought the water would be changed after each set of visitors?

it absolutely should be ..

Presumably then you never use public transport, public swimming pools, public playparks, public showers or toilets etc?

The truth is, a hot tub, given they are full of chemicals, are drained after each stay (or should be) and are filtered etc are probably cleaner than a lot of facilities you don't give a second thought to using.

I wouldn't get someone to rub a swab over your keyboard or phone if I were you. Far worse.
