Was the young Queen Victoria incredibly beautiful or nay?

Movies and TV suggest she was stunning as a young woman, but all the pictures of her that are widely familiar today are of a plain fizzog.

Was she hot or not?

I wonder if this thread would stand if it was about a woman alive today 🤔 or more recently deceased.

I think it's hard to jusge because in every photo and portrait, no matter her age, she looks absolutely miserable. It might be that a smile changed her face completely.

I know smiling in photos wasn't a thing then, as you had to stay still for so long, but dear god she looks like she's chewing a wasp.

This picture is quite interesting, and she looks quite attractive I think with modern hair and makeup. It's hard to see past her very very unflattering (by modern standards) hair etc in a lot of pictures I think. They also seem to make a big deal of her eyelids in paintings, that aren't quite so droopy in photos. Perhaps it was fashionable. Demure maybe? Dunno.

She looks like Anna Kendrick in the modern photo

I’ve just watched a programme on BBC2 called ‘The World’s Most Photographed’. Victoria was keen being photographed. She doesn’t look all that attractive even as a young woman.

I think she was kind of average. However she was quite an awful person in many ways.

The Royal Family are not noted for their good looks.
With all their money, they could at least have minor surgery to e.g. pin back ears, have corrective dentistry etc.

samestyle · 22/07/2023 18:50

I always thought she was

Riapia · 22/07/2023 19:00

Would all of QV’s critics care to post a photo of themselves so that we can admire their dazzling beauty.

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 22/07/2023 19:01

Nay.
I think Queen Elizabeth I might have been though.

Fortunately Queen Victoria and anyone who ever knew her are all long dead...

That's an interesting one she was apparently fairly plain too but with great personal charisma and almost created a cult around the whole concept of her as a Virgin Queen.

Well the Windsor men have a very small window and go downhill fast , but the last thread about the Windsor men looks got deleted .

She was brought up very strictly and couldn't be carefree even before she became Queen. I think that this shows through in her expression in her photos.

She looked remarkably like Princess Beatrice - very petite, fine boned, tiny waist, large, striking eyes, pretty hair.
Here is how she sketched herself as a teenager:

Here is a photo when she was in her early 30s - with rather blunt comments:

Have you seen that portrait of her when young with her hair loose? Princess Beatrice definitely takes after her in that one!

continentallentil · 22/07/2023 19:08

@MorrisZapp you know she wasn’t - no one thinks she was. The fact beautiful actors play her on TV is irrelevant.

Why start a thread criticising a woman’s looks?

She might be dead but you are adding another little bit of weight to centuries of judging women by what they look like that impacts on us all.

Why would you do that?

I took it more as a comment on our current obsession with female beauty (which of course has ‘fashions’) to the exclusion of truth, rather than any sort of value judgement of Victoria’s looks. But that’s just my take of course.

It’s a bit of a ‘tree falls in the forest’ thing though, is it body shaming if there’s nobody alive who knew her?

I have no issue with threads like this I just find the double standard interesting.

She was not considered a beauty at the time. Queen elizabeth 2nd was also not considered attractive by her contemporaries

Which is weird because as a young woman, she really was very beautiful.

Same as William very attractive young..like teens and early 20s...then just got worse.

Hollyhobbi · 22/07/2023 19:40

Did she have an overactive thyroid?

The Queen just aged naturally.

William...oh dear.

I look like Kate Middleton, of course. Well, I do look royal. Henry VIII

Charliescat · 22/07/2023 19:44

How many people in the public eye now do we see in photographs etc without make up and whatever else I think judging by the times she wasn’t beautiful but not ugly either . The Romanov sisters and their mother and aunt Ella were in my opinion very attractive royals

BigMandsTattooPortfolio · 22/07/2023 19:51

Both Albert and Queen Victoria did a lot to promote photography, keen as they were to promote new technology, so we are fortunate to have a wealth of daguerreotypes depicting the royal family.

This article is interesting and shows some daguerreotypes (early photographs on glass negatives) of the queen as a younger woman:

Queen Victoria's Passion for Photography

Such was Queen Victoria’s passion for photography, that family photographs eventually took up every inch of space in her private rooms.

She had 9 children and lived to 81 so although she was on the fat side she probably wasn’t massive or that unhealthy.

When Charles became King there were loads of TV/radio shows on him and commentary suggesting that he was really hot as a young man and I was thinking wtf! He has always been unattractive looks wise, he was obviously popular with women due to his status. If historians and commentators tell enough people that he was a looker maybe it will become a historical ‘fact’ that we all thought he was a looker…..

BigMandsTattooPortfolio · 22/07/2023 19:55

Like Beatrice, I think Queen Vic had quite beautiful large, soulful eyes.
