It’s only July but I want to talk Cosy Autumn stuff!

I’m sat in my garden (with a break in the rain). I have a hoodie on and a fire going and a good cup of tea. I’ve been looking at making a list of ideas for Christmas gifts and ordered the new school uniform!

Anyone else up for a some pre-autumn cosy/ness? I’m thinking the pumpkin decorated glass mug I saw advertised at The Range is a step too far at this point in time?

I was in vermont and new hampshire for October and specifically Halloween last year and it was so GLORIOUS. I felt like I was in The Gilmore Girls or Hocus Pocus.

That sounds like my idea of heaven!

I get a kind of reverse SAD in summer as my sleep, which is bad anyway gets even worse which makes me agitated and anxious. I also experience a significant slump in energy which returns in autumn. But you're somehow maligned when you dare to say you're not mad keen on summer. I don't just prefer autumn for the cosiness it actually helps me feel better mentally.

D20 · 23/07/2023 14:05

For all you autumn haters out there - I’m not wishing summer away. I’m struggling to fecking find it in the UK at the minute.

Believe it or not we bought an air con unit at Christmas ready for summer and have only had it on twice. I’ve got ice lollies in the freezer all ready to go. I’d love for the kids to have a wonderfully sunny summer holiday period this year but may as well embrace what we do have. Pumpkin glass mug half full and all.

Me too! I told dh I'd probably doomed us all to a terrible summer by buying it..
Sorry! 😬

I haven't dared to look....but is this weather set to stay for the rest of the school holidays then?
I feel like giving in to autumn vibes is like welcome it in and I'm not ready!
And I genuinely do love autumn.

moderndaywitch · 23/07/2023 16:12

I love summer but the weather has felt slightly autumnal the last few days. I do like autumn until the early November point, then it all feels a bit bleak until spring.

I love autumn vibes and autumn 'tv' shows make me feel so seasonal. I'm also a big fan of the Halloween spooky season 🎃

My DH grew up in massachusetts and still has his family there. It is the most beautiful place in the World in Autumn, my favourite time to visit!

Whilst I like autumn in general, I don't want to talk about it yet. As for school uniform, I think 'back to school' advertising when in England school holidays have only just begun is awful. On another thread I advocated a levy on such early advertising, which at least could fund some activities for children.

That's bad that you would like to do away with the advertising and early bird offers , can't you think about people where their budgets are tight , and like to get it sorted and off their mind so they can relax and enjoy the summer .

Mrsfussypants1 · 23/07/2023 17:05

The back to school stuff has always appeared early, I'm late 40s and it was the same then. I like to get uniform early to take advantage of the 20% off at m&s and sainsburys, certain sizes can be a pain to get if you leave it late. Done and out of the way so just an easy shop of school shoes and back pack to get.

Ivalueloyaltyaboveallelse · 23/07/2023 17:08

Also most places you order school jumpers, PE kits etc have an order before deadline. Ours this year was before 31st July.

WizardinTraining · 23/07/2023 17:45

I adore Autumn but I also like to enjoy all the seasons for what they have to offer and I’d really like a bit more summer before getting into cosy mode.

I really dislike the way shops want to rush us through the year and never seem to actually have what you need to buy in stock at the appropriate time. I’ve seen some lovely Autumn things but I don’t want to buy them in July - I know they’ll be gone in a few weeks though.

Excitingnewusername · 23/07/2023 17:48

I love autumn (and spring, and most of winter), and don't cope well with hot summers as I end up more cooped up indoors than I do in 'bad' weather, so I'm not too put out by reverting to autumn mode for the last week or so, but I really could do with some more light and blue skies before autumn proper. I want to watch the bees and butterflies lazily pooling around, rather than grumpy looking soggy magpies wanting me to go out in the rain to feed them.

I could also really do without the boil in the bag waterproof effect of warm air but pelting rain.

However, I'm currently stuck under a big warm sleeping cat for the first time in a while, as its cool enough indoors with the windows open to necessitate cat snuggles, so it's not all bad. 😁

Ivalueloyaltyaboveallelse · 23/07/2023 17:55

@Excitingnewusername enjoy those cat cuddles I wish our cat was a bit more snuggly. I did however get a rare cuddle early this morning so can’t complain too much.

ShowOfHands · 23/07/2023 19:42

Delatron · 23/07/2023 13:11

If you like all seasons you wouldn’t be wishing summer away for an extra long autumn and winter.

Can you quote where I've wished away summer or hoped for an extra long autumn and winter?

Excitingnewusername · 23/07/2023 19:44

@Ivalueloyaltyaboveallelse I did! He's a heavy bugger though, so its also always nice to get the feeling back in my legs after. I now have the other one asleep on my foot, which started off quite cosy but has become a little bit sweaty-feeling now. Apparently this doesn't bother the cat in question.

Rare cuddles are the most valuable cuddles. My soppy cat is anyone's as long as he can fit on them.

If a couple of weeks of 25 degrees causes people collective misery then you all have big problems.

I mean I don’t like cold dreary weather but I don’t moan throughout the 6-9 months that we get it because that’s what it’s like in the Uk…

And can you quote my misery? People aren't miserable, they're full of anticipatory joy.

You don't moan about dreary weather, only about people who feel differently to you? It's a peculiar way to live imo.

You literally said that me wishing for a few weeks of 25 degrees of warm weather was wishing collective misery on all those poor souls who love autumn. They were your words..

I don’t moan about cold and dreary weather no. I get a bit frustrated that after 11 months of said cold and dreary weather a few weeks of warm weather brings out all
sorts of moaning and the minute it starts to rain for most of July people start talking about bloody autumn and being cosy. That’s annoying . Because it’s going to rain and be cool for months and months from September.

It’s not the same when we get 3 weeks of summer versus 10 months of Autumn and Winter. What a long time to snuggle under a blanket.

It’s exactly the same, irrelevant of the duration. You might get through winter by making plans to go away to a hot location to lay on a beach for two weeks. Lots of us get through what seems to us like months of never ending heat by looking forward to when we can be comfortable again.

Hmm ok months of never ending heat

I mean I can pull up the weather stats but no you cold lovers seem to be only happy if it’s cool every single bloody month of the year.

Imagine the reverse? Imagine if it was actually 25-30 degrees for 10 months and you hated it. And then finally it cooled down and rained. But even after 10 months of warmth people started moaning about the cold and rain. You would think they were crazy no? I mean they’ve just had 10 whole months of the weather they love. And here they are moaning the minute it gets colder….

I’m exactly the same. I get a real buzz of energy and excitement for all the lovely things that happen in autumn and winter when the evenings start drawing in.

I posted this in chat not AIBU. I’m not sure why unhappy people are still hanging around bringing the mood down when there are plenty of other threads they could be reading? Will making everyone else unhappy add anything to your life?

Yes!!! My thoughts exactly

It really does feel like months of never ending heat so, yes, I get through it by thinking about autumn and winter.

And if it were the reverse, and one of those heat lovers started a thread on here asking for people who also enjoyed the heat to join them talking about sun cream and outdoor pools with nice sun loungers to help get them through the two months of cold weather, I’d think to myself that it clearly wasn’t the thread for me and keep scrolling. I’m slightly confused why several of you seem so personally affronted that some of us don’t like the heat. It’s not like anything could change if we started a petition to abolish the summer 🙄
