Best ABBA song and why?

Seeing ABBA Voyage soon and getting in the mood listening to the set list. Best ABBA song for me is SOS - just utterly euphoric and bizarrely gives me goosebumps when they sing the, "When you're gone..." bit.

What's yours?

I was in South America recently and heard loads of ABBA in perfect Spanish. Apparently they were the original Latin beats.

It was amazing.

Andante Andante is beautiful

It is, but this is another song I used to sing along to as a very small child. I recently heard it and sang along, and was slightly horrified 😂

RuthW · 22/07/2023 23:39

Why did it have to be me - no idea why. Just like it.

Speaking of which I do like Hasta Manana. Very good for singing along to in the shower.

I just think these lines are sooo perfectly written:

I don't wanna talk, About things we've gone through
Though it's hurting me, Now it's history

I've played all my cards, And that's what you've done too
Nothing more to say, No more ace to play

HRTQueen · 23/07/2023 02:16

SOS

i agree op an I often get goosebumps it’s so perfectly produced

Name Of The Game and Lay All Your Love on Me are my second favourites

RabbitsRock · 23/07/2023 02:51

Dancing Queen is not only my favourite Abba song but my favourite song ever - absolutely love it & always feel uplifted when I hear it, whilst nostalgic for my 17 year old self.

Gracewithoutend · 23/07/2023 03:08

Winner takes it all. I think because it was written during their actual divorce. Its just so personal and moving.

marshmallowfinder · 23/07/2023 04:09

I love Eagle.

Best for what though?
They cover such a wide range.
I sometimes think of life stages/events in terms of ABBA songs. Oh you're at the Winner Takes it All stage, the Dancing Queen stage, we're having a Chiquitita moment.
I'm at the When All is Said and Done stage 😊

I'm currently in a Winner Takes it All/When All is Said and Done stage in my life right now!

I absolutely love ABBA

I just think their music has so many levels that appeals to everyone. The actual music is catchy for kids to dance to at weddings. But lyrically they have such depth. Especially later stuff when they were breaking up.

I love in Winner Takes it All this a woman singing a song that her ex-partner has written about their breakup. I realised recently Super Trooper was about them missing their kids on tour and it just gets me everytime now.

Like an Angel Passing Through my Room is one of my favourite underrated ones.

Name of the Game is my ultimate ABBA favourite.

However Arrival is one of my all-time favourite albums. My earliest memory is dancing around the living room to it as a toddler.

I'm just imagining how a toddler would dance to Arrival! Kate Bush style? It's beautiful and always makes me cry despite the lack of lyrics. Abba have an extraordinary ability to do this with their key changes/voices...

Fernando always gets to me because it makes war so vivid and something about the old people in the song looking back, remembering how they were proud to fight and never thought they could lose, reminds me how many young people are fighting around the world today and it makes me shiver how endless war is.

Winner Takes It All always gets me too. The lyrics are so honest about how when a relationship ends one person is devastated and the other doesn’t feel much except awkward.

Public service announcement: Mamma Mia 2 is now on Netflix. I watched it again yesterday. The absolutely lovely young Bill was an excellent distraction from the rain.

Abba is also perfect on a rainy afternoon as you can gaze out of the window in a melancholy way pretending you are agnetha gazing out of the train window in their video for 'The day before you came.'

not dramatic at all 😃

Gimme! Gimme! Gimme!
I absolutely love this track. No matter what shitty mood I'm in those first ten seconds will make me want to dance!

The album Arrival, not the actual song 😂

Specifically Dancing Queen and Money Money Money.

Love Abba, saw Voyage in May and booked to go again.
I think On and on and on is a very clever song.

RocketIceLollie · 25/07/2023 22:01

Waterloo. I Iike the rhythm of the piano.

overitallll · 25/07/2023 23:15

Has anyone mentioned Under Attack yet? Love it!
There are so many, Mamma Mia the party at the O2 was great for resurrecting some obscure ones.

Any tips on where to sit?

HalfasleepChrisintheMorning · 26/07/2023 05:58

It’s a small arena - I think it’s been designed so everyone has a good view. If you want to dance you could have people behind who don’t want you to- so the back of a section would be good.
