Best ABBA song and why?

Seeing ABBA Voyage soon and getting in the mood listening to the set list. Best ABBA song for me is SOS - just utterly euphoric and bizarrely gives me goosebumps when they sing the, "When you're gone..." bit.

What's yours?

Happy new year

PrudenceDictates · 22/07/2023 18:30

It's impossible to pick one! I'd pick different ones tomorrow, but today it's:

Winner Takes it All
Knowing Me Knowing You
SOS
Chiquitita
Name of the Game

AlphaAlpha · 22/07/2023 18:32

@RichardsGear
It's bloody brilliant, hence why I'm going again! We went this time last year, I spent the first half hour just agog - it really is stunning! We had dance floor tickets last year but seated tomorrow as taking the in laws and my 10 year old.
The atmosphere is just amazing, There's a live band that interact with the crowd too, it's just the best!

The Day before you came. Makes me cry and I'm not sure why.

And Eagle. I love that. It's one of my funeral songs

Babymamamama · 22/07/2023 18:36

Eagle.

Was so super happy to hear it in the show. That song soothes my soul. God I want to go again now. Voyage was so amazing from start to finish. And not what I’d expected at all. So artistic and dreamy.

Dancing Queen
it reminds me of my carefree college days and club nights out.

overthinkersanonnymus · 22/07/2023 18:38

Lay all your love of me

MotherofPearl · 22/07/2023 19:26

Good to hear that the ABBA museum in Stockholm is worth a visit @Crikeyalmighty. We're going this summer. I love the 'walk in, dance out' strap-line. Grin

So many, I've been into Abba all my life, hopefully I'll list a few here that haven't been mentioned yet.
My first favourite was Gimme Gimme Gimme, my mum would play it in the car on the way home from my drama lessons.
Chiquitita - would love dancing to the bit at the end in my room, also loved, The King has lost his Crown and Head over Heels.

My friend and I listened to one of her Abba tapes and hooted with laughter at the word 'Sex' in When all is said and Done, we were 11 at the time.

Another friend and I loved playing MarioCart when it first came out, (must be a while ago)we would play while listening to Tiger, singing 'I am behind you, I always find you, I am the Kooopaa'
We also danced to Dum Dum Diddle and Soldiers.

Listening to Move on helped me get through the end of my first relationship.

Other favourites are King Kong Song, What about Livingstone and Elaine is so fun and dancy. When I kissed the Teacher is slow but a good song.
Wish I could go to Voyage but I'm not in the UK.

ABBA voyage is the best thing I’ve seen in years - blew me and my DD18 away!

Favourite 3 songs:

The Visitors (didn’t really know it pre-voyage)
Gimme Gimme Gimme
Eagle

Vallmo47 · 22/07/2023 21:05

Another one who cries every time I glance over at my daughter and “slipping through my fingers” is playing - heartbreaking.
Adore ABBA, but aside from all the upbeat classics I do love Fernando and One of Us.
Good god it is impossible to choose just one, depends on my mood.

DarkDarkNight · 22/07/2023 21:05

Take A Chance On Me. My dad played it all the time when I was young and I hated it, but I get it now. It’s gorgeous.

InstantGratificationDarkPlaygroundOfMN · 22/07/2023 21:18

Head over heels

Should have been a bigger hit
This would be my tango song on Strictly! Glitterball

WeAreTheHeroes · 22/07/2023 21:27

I don't think The Name of the Game has been mentioned, but it's great. I really think they made fantastic pop songs which were pretty diverse in feel and mood.

The one of theirs I really am not keen on is Waterloo.

camtsaywho · 22/07/2023 21:43

Well OBVIOUSLY dancing Queen !! (The only song I ever see every generation get up and dance to !) but winner takes it all... is the most beautiful.

Judelawswife68 · 22/07/2023 22:34

Another one who can't listen to Slipping through her fingers without crying.
I also really like Name of the Game and Winner takes it all.

pnutter · 22/07/2023 22:54

Fernando, gorgeous

SpaceCorpsDirective1742 · 22/07/2023 23:00

Name of the Game is my ultimate ABBA favourite.

However Arrival is one of my all-time favourite albums. My earliest memory is dancing around the living room to it as a toddler.

Angrymum22 · 22/07/2023 23:09

Dancing Queen, my DSis and I had all the albums, she is brunette and I’m a blonde so we spent far too much time in front of the mirror with hairbrushes and ABBA blasting out.
I want to go to see the show with my sister and her two daughters, one is brunette and one blonde.
Dancing Queen makes me smile till my face hurts, it was played at my wedding and will be played at my funeral with strict instructions for everyone to dance.
Abba were my coming of age band and although we all denied being fans during our late teens we would race to the dance floor as soon as the opening chords were played.
The only other track which invokes the same feeling is “Relax” by Franky goes to Hollywood.

LunaTheCat · 22/07/2023 23:12

it is so difficult to choose… each is so magical in its own way… I think Fernando for its haunting melody.
I just love ABBA “

FreddiesTeeth · 22/07/2023 23:18

Best for what though?
They cover such a wide range.
I sometimes think of life stages/events in terms of ABBA songs. Oh you're at the Winner Takes it All stage, the Dancing Queen stage, we're having a Chiquitita moment.
I'm at the When All is Said and Done stage 😊

LoobyDop · 22/07/2023 23:21

Frenando. Just so beautiful.

RichardsGear · 22/07/2023 23:23

Thank you all for highlighting some songs I'd never heard of. Can't wait for Voyage.

Andante Andante is beautiful

TheFireflies · 22/07/2023 23:32

My favourite is I Let The Music Speak, purely because it was my favourite as a child and I think the first song I ever learned by heart.

I also love Slipping Through My Fingers as I remember my mum telling me that it made her cry (I was still small at the time - infant school - but even then I understood why).

My Love, My Life is beautiful.

When I Kissed The Teacher always makes me smile because I remember when I was at infant school we all got a turn to choose the song which played as we all came in to assembly, and that was my choice 😬😳😂

Yeah, ABBA was basically my childhood.
