Best ABBA song and why?

Seeing ABBA Voyage soon and getting in the mood listening to the set list. Best ABBA song for me is SOS - just utterly euphoric and bizarrely gives me goosebumps when they sing the, "When you're gone..." bit.

What's yours?

Voulez vous

Crikeyalmighty · 22/07/2023 15:58

Abba also have fantastic lyrics on their more serious songs- that aspect is often missed

Knowing me knowing you, one of Us, winner takes it all are fantastic lyrically about failing relationships

Day before you came is fantastic about new relationships

SOS is universally accepted in the business as a fantastically produced song, indeed their production in general is tremendous

I do recommend the Abba museum in Stockholm. My H spent far too long remixing songs and I was fascinated by the costume bit and the fact Frida made most of the clothes!!

They were originally a folky type outfit too .

One of Us makes me cry.
For karaoke you can't beat the old Andante Andante.

I'd been an Abba obsessive since I was 5 so I've loved different songs at different parts of my love. At the moment (following Abba voyage) I've been listening to The Visitors. Also listening to 'move on' constantly.

Meredusoleil · 22/07/2023 16:02

Loads of them.

But especially

Dancing Queen
Mamma Mia
Money money money
Gimme gimme
Voulez vous

izzy2076 · 22/07/2023 16:02

@IfLoveBelievesInMe yes!! Happy New Year and The way old friends do, bring tears to my eyes every time.

Crikeyalmighty · 22/07/2023 16:04

@Harryyourenogoodalone the lyrics to that are fabulous- I felt that way after my first marriage ended for quite a while and played this an awful lot

They passed me by
All of those great romances
You were, I felt, robbing me
Of my rightful chances
My picture clear
Everything seemed so easy
And so I dealt you the blow
One of us had to go
Now it's different, I want you to know
One of us is crying, one of us is lying
In a lonely bed
Staring at the ceiling
Wishing she was somewhere else instead
One of us is lonely, one of us is only
Waiting for a call
Sorry for herself, feeling stupid, feeling small
Wishing she had never left at all
I saw myself
As a concealed attraction
I felt you kept me away
From the heat and the action
Just like a child
Stubborn and misconceiving
That's how I started the show
One of us had to go
Now I'm changed and I want you to know
One of us is crying, one of us is lying
In a lonely bed
Staring at the ceiling
Wishing she was somewhere else instead
One of us is lonely, one of us is only
Waiting for a call
Sorry for herself, feeling stupid, feeling small
Wishing she had never left at all
Never left at all
Staring at the ceiling
Wishing she was somewhere else instead
One of us is lonely, one of us is only
Waiting for a call
Sorry for herself, feeling stupid, feeling small

Abba is also perfect on a rainy afternoon as you can gaze out of the window in a melancholy way pretending you are agnetha gazing out of the train window in their video for 'The day before you came.'

GingerCoi · 22/07/2023 16:10

It's impossible to choose... There are too many fab songs!

I would definitely have on my list:

My Love, My Life - beautiful harmonies. I loved this way before it was made popular in Mamma Mia 2. Their version is also really lovely.
Andante, Andante - as above
When All Is Said And Done (gorgeous song, even Piers Brosnan can't ruin it ha)
Dancing Queen (it's a work of genius imo)
Slipping Through My Fingers (utterly heart-wrenching, again one I have loved for many years. Like a PP, I have never been able to listen to it all the way through without crying, especially since havibg my own children)
I've Been Waiting For You
I Wonder
One Man, One Woman
Gonna Sing You My Lovesong
Name of the Game

Agree with PP about The Visitors - there isn't a duff song on the whole album.

GingerCoi · 22/07/2023 16:11

Ooh yes, and The Way Old Friends Do. Agree, @izzy2076 , it's a tearjerker.

RichardsGear · 22/07/2023 16:26

So many fantastic songs. I'd never even heard One of Us before going to see Mamma Mia 2 - just one listen and it was in my head all the way home. This is sacrilegious I know but I really quite like Dominic Cooper singing Lay All Your Love On Me (but not poor Pierce murdering SOS 😆).

Off to ABBA voyage for the second time tomorrow, absolutely cannot wait 🪩

And I agree with you, SOS is a total belter!

RichardsGear · 22/07/2023 16:32

Cocolapew · 22/07/2023 15:54

SOS, Ring Ring and Take a Chance On Me. The vocals on Take a Chance are sublime.
I was hoping to get to Voyage over the Summer but got a puppy instead 😄

I hope you called the puppy either Frida/Agnetha or Benny/Bjorn...actually Frida is a pretty cool name for a dog or cat!

I will be pogoing like mad when it comes on. Is the show everything it's hyped up to be?

For melancholy: Slipping through my fingers
For driving: Gimme gimme gimme
For singing along: Angel Eyes or Mamma Mia
For dancing: Dancing Queen

Enjoy Voyage. The communal singing is phenomenal.

mathanxiety · 22/07/2023 16:35

What a coincidence this thread is - I spent ages last evening listening to Al Andar, the Spanish version of Move On.

Shout out for 'When I Kissed the Teacher'.

Yiayoula · 22/07/2023 16:36

Looking forward to Voyage later this year .
Like so many others I can’t pick just one song , favourites are :
Dancing Queen - how can you hear it and not want to dance ? My ultimate happy song.
Andante, Andante - didn’t know this one until second Mamma Mia film, love it .
Slipping Through my Fingers - has me in tears every time , daughter and granddaughter memories .

dizzydizzydizzy · 22/07/2023 16:48

They're all so good - complex songs with Agnetha and Frida'a amazing singing talents.

I even love the ones that weren't hits.

Lay All Your Love On Me, duh!

Abra1t · 22/07/2023 18:13

I had to stop listening to Slipping Through My Fingers when my youngest, my daughter, went to university.

BucketofTeaMassiveCake · 22/07/2023 18:13

The Winner Takes It All - for one thing I rather like sad songs and also it's about a relationship breakdown. I've not been through divorce but like many of us I've had failed relationships and this song just says something to me.

Bananalanacake · 22/07/2023 18:25

The King Kong song is brilliant.

Oh that's the one I meant when I said Our Last Summer upthread!
Totally agree, makes me cry!
