...can we just talk about how skinny Margot Robbie is?

Champagneponies · 21/07/2023 16:54

..first of all, I really appreciate her as an actress and know she is naturally very slim. But seeing the size she is now promoting Barbie and doing all these premieres - she is a lot skinnier than she has been previously.

I don't know why but it doesn't sit comfortably with me. Here is an insanely talented actress who has always been praised for her talent. I've always appreciated that, albeit small, she's always been quite a 'healthy' slim and I've thought she's set a good example to young girls.

But she seems to have dropped weight to become drastically tiny just as she is being glorified as the real life Barbie. And no one's talking about it. Am I the only one whose noticed and who feels weird with it?

OP posts:
MotherofGorgons · 21/07/2023 17:59

But @Champagneponies if you google you will see she seemed to be the same weight for Babylon. I think she is a bit more toned now, perhaps.

Are people looking at BOTH photos...? One is before and one is after

Please stop OP.

Can you not see that inviting posters to discuss an apparent weight change between two photos is demeaning & objectifying?

It's definitely 'not in the spirit' as MNHQ might say.

Unbalance · 21/07/2023 18:00

And using the word "skinny" is just as insulting as calling a larger person "podgy"

See - this strikes me as disingenuous. But maybe it has to do with where you're from?

In my town growing up in the 90's "skinny" was a great compliment to get as a teenager! Girls and young women actively wanted to be "skinny". It just meant very slim.

What's that famous quote..."You can never be too rich or too thin" Can't remember who said it.

But notions of slimness/ thinness/ skinniness has been associated with being attractive for decades now.

DogSitterMum · 21/07/2023 17:59

I agree. I loathe the word skinny, probably because some people feel they have the right to comment on my body.

Renee Zellweger put on 30 lbs to play Bridget Jones twice. I can’t recall seeing anything at the time commenting on her size. Actors put on weight or lose weight depending on the character they’re playing.

Jesús there was tons of comment about her size. Every fucking article mentioned it. Aged and addled I may be but even I can remember that

watersprites · 21/07/2023 18:01

That's utter bullshit. Skinny is often seen as a positive, a compliment. Podgy is not.

RitzyMcFitzy · 21/07/2023 18:02

Kate Moss' mantra used to be '"nothing tastes as good as skinny feels"

Hibiscrubbed · 21/07/2023 18:02

Referring back to a previous post, has someone on this thread suggested that a size 16 is the ‘ideal’? 😳

watersprites · 21/07/2023 18:02

@Champagneponies she lost weight for the Sharon Tate role/Chanel gig

No work done to her face?

She had a lovely face to begin with for sure, but since moving to Hollywood it's clearly been enhanced via a few tweaks.

Her face looks natural to me - especially her forehead and under eye area , I see no evidence of any fillers etc ?

MotherofGorgons · 21/07/2023 18:03

No to be fair @Hibiscrubbed since I brought it up, no one has. But that is the average size for a British woman now.

Her face looks very natural. But that doesn't mean she hasn't had any work done. Compare her lips nose etc. to her lips and nose from her earlier days.

But apparently it makes one a cunt to point out that an A List actress has had surgery.

ElectricTouch · 21/07/2023 18:06

There is a pro-ana contingent on MN who are quite frightening and some of them are here, OP! I remember the actress who played Buffy in the 90s coming out and saying that she and women in the spotlight like her had chefs and personal trainers and that she shouldn't be held up as a body role model, that girls should not aspire to be as slim as she was. I remember that article so vividly because it was so unusual in the 'heroin chic' era when I was a teenager to hear something like that.

Posters claiming that major Hollywood actors (of either sex) have totally normal, easily achieveable physiques that in fact most people have are being really disingenuous. Being very thin, or being very sculpted or heavily muscled is part of the job and stars do, like Sarah Michelle Gellar was at pains to point out, have nutritionists and trainers and beauty treatments and private gyms and all the rest of it to help them maintain their admirable and enviable shape. And I am worried about a return to the 90s idealisation of very, very thin 'superwaif' bodies. I think beauty standards do need to be discussed and that they can be without criticism of individual actresses. Your posts are pretty reasonable, OP, and there is a scary level of delusion in some of the replies!

She just looks like natural aging/make up has changed her face slightly rather than having any work done ?

YabbaDabbaDooooo · 21/07/2023 18:07

The ideals our culture holds up to us absolutely are our business though.

And this can be discussed without the OP singling out one woman, or anyone for that matter.

It's pure nastiness.

MotherofGorgons · 21/07/2023 18:08

What size is it ok to be now, without being accused of being "pro-ana"?🤔

I was getting that dawning realisation that I was interacting with some quite strange people. You have made me feel better. Thank you

It's not linked to a dress size, it's a mindset. And setting foot in the diet threads here, you'll see it's rife!

@Mirabai skinny shaming is definitely a thing. I don't find the word 'skinny' offensive though @Wiccan ... And I am slim.

Wow, people who think I'm shaming Margot are really not reading my posts. Or maybe I'm very inarticulate...

I MYSELF AM VERY SLIM. THAT IS NOT WHAT IM COMMENTING ON. ITS THE WEIGHT LOSS IN RELATION TO THE TIMING AND PROMOTION OF BARBIE.

She looks fine and her size isn't much different from a couple of years ago . Also repeatedly saying that you are slim doesn't make it ok . It's still shaming someone's body !

Agreed.

It's pure nastiness towards a woman who looks perfectly normal and healthy.

A major portion of the media content around the Bridget Jones films was 'look at how much weight RA has put on/how did she put it on/how quickly did she manage to lose it/what did she do to lose it' etc.
