...can we just talk about how skinny Margot Robbie is?

..first of all, I really appreciate her as an actress and know she is naturally very slim. But seeing the size she is now promoting Barbie and doing all these premieres - she is a lot skinnier than she has been previously.

I don't know why but it doesn't sit comfortably with me. Here is an insanely talented actress who has always been praised for her talent. I've always appreciated that, albeit small, she's always been quite a 'healthy' slim and I've thought she's set a good example to young girls.

But she seems to have dropped weight to become drastically tiny just as she is being glorified as the real life Barbie. And no one's talking about it. Am I the only one whose noticed and who feels weird with it?

The ideals our culture holds up to us absolutely are our business though.

@AgathaSpencerGregson

Yes, agreed.

There is a world of difference between discussing an actor and why they might look how they do in social and cultural contexts, and making personal remarks about somebody's appearance in your own life.

The image of the actor in the public domain is a cultural signifier. I don't get why people pretend to not understand this.

Because as this thread shows, they’re incredibly invested in these ideals. it’s surprised me, but as mentioned, I and my peers are well past the age of pursuing the female ideal 😂

It’s so sad that a perfectly healthy looking very slim woman is criticised like this - she’s not underweight, she’s natural and you can tell she hasn’t had any work done to her face either - she’s clearly healthy and natural and a good role model and OP is trying to demonise her

For the ‘crime’ of not having a fat body, and for making those that clearly aren’t happy with their physiques have to confront that. 🤷‍♀️

Erm, I'm actually naturally extremely slim myself and have experienced skinny shaming. That's not what I'm doing. It's the drastic change that I've noticed and keep seeing when she's in the Barbie press. I just think it's interesting that she's promoting 'Barbie' and she's lost lots of weight...

Is it because she’s promoting Barbie? Or is it because she played a doll in a film so she had to get in shape.

MotherofGorgons · 21/07/2023 17:49

I for one would be perfectly happy for my DD to look like Margot. Healthy female ideal, if you ask me.

Mirabai · 21/07/2023 17:49

Also - I’ve never experienced skinny shaming, I’m not convinced it’s a thing.

SorryButThatsAFact · 21/07/2023 17:50

Absolute blatant body shaming towards a woman who looks perfectly normal.

You should be ashamed of yourself.

AgathaSpencerGregson · 21/07/2023 17:50

MotherofGorgons · 21/07/2023 17:42

@AgathaSpencerGregson I definitely think she is the norm anywhere outside the UK maybe.

Not anywhere I’ve been …

I am trying to imagine a world in which such a thought about my DD would ever occur to me. Can’t. Can’t do it. Just no.

He admits an unhealthy diet of eating an almond a day.

🙄🙄🙄🙄

No, he doesn't.

Emily Blunt said this with a relevant 'like' added in - she was making a point, not being factual.

He was aiming to replicate the physical look & also the personality type of Oppenheimer who famously drank quite a bit, and smoked, and ate little.

He admits to becoming a bit obsessed & being aware it was unhealthy. He worked phenomenally hard on the movie, long days existing on adrenalin.

Melassa · 21/07/2023 17:52

Looks normal to me, up until a few years ago I was pretty much the same size, and I do not starve myself at all.

Some people are naturally slim without much effort
Some people take care of their bodies without going to extremes

the fact there’s not a lot of chub on her is actually perfectly normal. Only lately with the rise of obesity is it seen as “shameful”

Also - I’ve never experienced skinny shaming, I’m not convinced it’s a thing.

As a student I was actually attacked (at a kebab shop of all places) on a night out in Oxford and called a ‘skinny cunt’ by a trio of larger girls. They ripped my hair out and broke one of my ribs. Was awful. The main one was so pissed and the attack was unprovoked.

Of course it is. Mainly from jealous women to be honest, but you've surely heard phrases such as "eat a sarnie love", "real men love curves only dogs like bones", "real women have curves" and lots of people feel emboldened to say this to people's faces.

No work done to her face?

She had a lovely face to begin with for sure, but since moving to Hollywood it's clearly been enhanced via a few tweaks.

It definitely is a thing . And using the word "skinny" is just as insulting as calling a larger person "podgy" .

Well my DD is currently much skinnier than Margot. We are Asian. Pretty normal for us. Though I also know plenty of non- Asian healthy women this size.

You seem very keen that everyone be a size 16 because thats 'healthy'.
Not for us.

Can posters stop being cunts about a woman purely because she’s talented, beautiful and not fat? Fuck sake.

Are people looking at BOTH photos...? One is before and one is after

Do you and your daughters feel there isn't enough representation of very slim people in our popular culture?

I know, right? What the hell?! Seems like a stealth boast to me.

In what way am I being a cunt?

It's cuntish to point out a truth. It's non-cuntish to pretend otherwise?

I'm fascinated.

Im not keen on any such thing, and nothing I have said suggests I am.
but I’m not very keen on the way you think about such things either, and you certainly ain’t selling it to me.

Yes one is from 2015 which was 8 years ago. Any from just prior to the Barbie role?

Sundance03 · 21/07/2023 17:58

@Mirabai of course skinny shaming is a real thing!!!!! Am skinny and have been called 'disgusting' in the past and told that my hubby must be a pedophile as I look like a child!!! Am healthy bmi BTW....

Champagneponies · 21/07/2023 17:59

@Mirabai skinny shaming is definitely a thing. I don't find the word 'skinny' offensive though @Wiccan ... And I am slim.

Wow, people who think I'm shaming Margot are really not reading my posts. Or maybe I'm very inarticulate...

I MYSELF AM VERY SLIM. THAT IS NOT WHAT IM COMMENTING ON. ITS THE WEIGHT LOSS IN RELATION TO THE TIMING AND PROMOTION OF BARBIE.

This is a pic of her in 2019 , before the Barbie role was even a thing.

All of this.

What a grotesque judgmental thread of a woman and her body.

I agree. I loathe the word skinny, probably because some people feel they have the right to comment on my body.

Renee Zellweger put on 30 lbs to play Bridget Jones twice. I can’t recall seeing anything at the time commenting on her size. Actors put on weight or lose weight depending on the character they’re playing.
