...can we just talk about how skinny Margot Robbie is?

..first of all, I really appreciate her as an actress and know she is naturally very slim. But seeing the size she is now promoting Barbie and doing all these premieres - she is a lot skinnier than she has been previously.

I don't know why but it doesn't sit comfortably with me. Here is an insanely talented actress who has always been praised for her talent. I've always appreciated that, albeit small, she's always been quite a 'healthy' slim and I've thought she's set a good example to young girls.

But she seems to have dropped weight to become drastically tiny just as she is being glorified as the real life Barbie. And no one's talking about it. Am I the only one whose noticed and who feels weird with it?

I thought the opposite actually, I thought isn’t it good she’s not gone super skinny for the Barbie role? Barbie dolls are traditionally very tall, super skinny, with big boobs, I think they’ve toned downed all of these elements by choosing an actress shaped like Margot Robbie.

This is a fascinating take.

Who do you think would have been a better fit as Barbie, among well known actors?

FlowersInTheSky · 21/07/2023 17:38

No, you shouldn’t be discussing someone else’s weight. It’s none of your business.

The ideals our culture holds up to us absolutely are our business though.

ABugWife · 21/07/2023 17:40

I think she looks fantastic in both pics but damn I would kill for her body in the red dress!

yogasaurus · 21/07/2023 17:41

AgathaSpencerGregson · 21/07/2023 17:39

Some people do, but most don’t, and won’t no matter how much they try. But the former type is still held up as the ideal, as the gushing and the rushing to say “I am just like this!” Demonstrates.
is it good if we say we can’t talk about this? I’m not sure. Seems even worse than my youth, when women like this were idealised but at least we felt free to discuss why that might be a problem.

Well, I don’t look like this, and I have no issue at with her looking the way she does. Nothing to do with me.

If you’re worried about trying to look like others, that’s your problem, not theirs.

Extrasprinklesplz · 21/07/2023 17:41

I've seen lots of actors who during preparing for a film or promotion have had drastic changes to their body.
I remember the rapper 50 cent doing one and people speculating about whether he had a drug addiction or something.
I assume it could be for that if she looks very very different?

floodywell · 21/07/2023 17:41

I haven't heard of her, but she looks like me in the red dress.

Just saying.

MotherofGorgons · 21/07/2023 17:42

@AgathaSpencerGregson I definitely think she is the norm anywhere outside the UK maybe.

No it isn’t. You’re not held up to anything. Be happy in your self.

If you think you’re too fat, do something about it. If you think you’re too thin, do something about it.

Don’t base yourself on anyone else.

There is clearly a difference between losing weight to play someone with a terminal illness and losing weight to conform to female body ideals.

Nobody expects male actors to be role models who don't contribute to eating disorders and negative body image.
She's playing a doll who is famously skinny and I'm glad that they've not gone for corsets, chicken fillets and cgi to create Barbie proportions on MR which would have been unacceptable and not allowed by Mattel . Playing Barbie is as legitimate a role as playing a terminally ill man.

I am well past these concerns. I am 48 years old, over the hill and happy to be there. But I am concerned about my DD and her peers.

idliketogetdownnow · 21/07/2023 17:43

I just don't think criticising another woman's body advances the cause in any way really. If we all stopped noticing and commenting, the impact would be enormous.

Justcallmebebes · 21/07/2023 17:43

Looks fine, dandy, healthy and normal to me. Plus, she's an actress playing Barbie so of course she's slimmed down for the role.

I wouldn't say she looks skinny and certainly not unhealthy

Well there's no woman in existence who has actual Barbie proportions

Arewehumanorarewecupboards · 21/07/2023 17:44

I think that she looks beautiful

Qbish · 21/07/2023 17:44

Why are you body shaming a woman, OP?

Actually I hear the influence of men in the public eye on men’s body image discussed increasingly - a good thing I think. It would be a backward step if we could no longer discuss this in relation to women.

Unbalance · 21/07/2023 17:45

@AgathaSpencerGregson

Yes, agreed.

There is a world of difference between discussing an actor and why they might look how they do in social and cultural contexts, and making personal remarks about somebody's appearance in your own life.

The image of the actor in the public domain is a cultural signifier. I don't get why people pretend to not understand this.

Fairtomiddline · 21/07/2023 17:45

She looks fantastic

But the ideals and associated messages would still be there. We just couldn’t talk about them. How is that good?

Pilatyay · 21/07/2023 17:46

She looks great- fit, toned and although I'm sure she works hard for her body she doesn't appear unhealthy. I don't see why she isn't a good role model for people, some women also look like her- is representation only for fat people? Should we not be striving for people to look after their bodies?

EarringsandLipstick · 21/07/2023 17:46

Feverly · 21/07/2023 16:59

Mind your own business and body.

All of this.

What a grotesque judgmental thread of a woman and her body.

EarringsandLipstick · 21/07/2023 17:47

ClaudiaWankleman · 21/07/2023 17:01

It’s absolutely none of your thinly-veiled body shaming business.

And this 👏👏👏👏

Ifitsnotscientific · 21/07/2023 17:47

It’s so sad that a perfectly healthy looking very slim woman is criticised like this - she’s not underweight, she’s natural and you can tell she hasn’t had any work done to her face either - she’s clearly healthy and natural and a good role model and OP is trying to demonise her

FFSwhatisthis · 21/07/2023 17:47

FlowersInTheSky · 21/07/2023 17:37

Oh for Christ sake. She’s not “skinny”. She’s a slim healthy young woman.

You’ve lost sight of what a healthy weight actually is.

@FlowersInTheSky I disagree, she is skinny, not slim. Her arm looks virtually 2 dimensional.

However, for a working actor playing Barbie, I think it's fine, it's pretty much what all actors sign up to when they accept a part, body fitting the image. Whether that's bigger or smaller than usual

AND she's working hard to promote the movie, it's only natural she's lost a bit of weight.

hopefully when it calms down a bit she'll rest, relax & eat, returning to her best body weight.
