Since when did this become a thing?

I’ve recently joined a local gym having spent a lot of my adult life trying to avoid the place. Don’t have much social media so didn’t realise the new “trend” is to wear scrunch bum shorts and sports bras

Honestly so many females wearing this in my gym. I felt like the odd one out wearing a black tshirt and some old black leggings.

Ive always done running so in okay shape but I felt out of place in what I was wearing having just started. Maybe I just need to pay less attention to others 😂

Ok, I’m going to say it and then run & hide with my hard hat on…..
I really don’t get the juxtaposition of women shouting loudly “don’t sexualise/ objectify me” and then dressing in not very much/provocatively🤷🏼‍♀️. I mean, dress how you want but don’t complain about the reactions you get to it when you know that’ll be the end result!
@Flippertyfeckerty

Wow possibly the worst thing I've ever read on this site!!

porridgeisbae · 21/07/2023 10:12

Running doesn't change anyone's shape IME.

@allthewaytobeanotown It totally does, my bum disappears completely if I get into even a fairly small amount of running. Everyone differs in how they respond to a persuit though I suppose, plus some people will run but still eat more calories than they're burning.

@Curiouscat101 I completely get what you mean, I imagine most people who've been in a gym in the last year or whatever would.

I bought some Gymshark clothes at one point but as they're a lot of polyester they're so unbreathable. Cotton is so much better. I suppose people just wear that plasticky stuff to try and look good. Some people definitely choose their outfit to pose.

Sewmania · 21/07/2023 10:12

Like everything these trends come and go. When I started going to the gym in the 80s all the women were wearing high cut leotards which showed off everything believe me. Just wear what you are comfortable in, no one will judge you or care.

Cotton is definitely not more “breathable” for the gym - you think all those Olympic athletes have made a terrible mistake in their high tech wicking outfits and should be wearing cotton stuff instead? Of course gym clothes are synthetic, that’s what performance fabrics are made from 🤦🏼‍♀️

Scrunch bum legging/shorts sexualise women.
Why on Earth do they wear them?
Women complain that they don't want to be sexualised.

And most women that wear them have seriously wibbly bums anyway.

Not all women complain they don't want to be sexualised. You only have to go on Instagram to see that a lot of women like it.

Despite a thread stuffed full of people all judging and caring. 🤣🤣
It is just the latest in a long line of previous versions of gym clothes though.

There’s loads of young women at my gym who wear minuscule shorts yanked so far up their bum crack, it looks absolutely awful and staggeringly uncomfortable - and usually half the cheeks hanging out bare too. I’m didn’t think I was a prude or into shaming women for what they wear but I am genuinely baffled that they think this looks in any way good, or that it’s appropriate to walk around a family friendly gym with their arses completely on show and partially bare. It’s also really gross and unhygienic not to be properly clothed when using exercise bikes - the thought of getting on that seat afterwards is 🤢

I wish gyms would enforce a dress code ensuring that people are basically clothed appropriately but as with many things it’s astounding that people apparently have to be told these things.

I blame Instagram. Half of them are too busy taking photos of said naked arse in the mirror to actually do any exercise.

And this isn’t a sexist thing, I have plenty of gripes about the posey gym blokes and their caveman grunting, swaggering and general hanging out while hogging weights they loft approximately once every fifteen minutes, but at least they have the decency to wear some clothes while being annoying.

Persiana · 21/07/2023 10:17

@Howtohideasausage your post made me laugh, like a nana 🤣

They’re not decent and you’re making other people uncomfortable.

I cried when I read your response.
I was just sharing my experience. I found them comfortable. This is a photo from Amazon - not mine.
I was trying to be positive on what started out as a lighthearted thread.
I'm not sure why my personal experience of finding them comfortable to exercise in led to such an unpleasant declaration. But, your response speaks volumes about you and not me.
Thank you to several others on the thread for pointing out the unnecessary unkindness of the response. Good to know there are other kind people about.

At the car park for our local park, a young woman was bending forward into her car, seeing to her baby. She had flesh coloured scrunch bum leggings on. I was completely sure she was naked from the waist down 😱. Itbwasn’t until I was almost breathing on her that I realised what she was wearing. I’ll put it out there now and say, it was not a good look.

Grin

I had this too - I was driving along a few months ago and saw a young woman at the side of the road some way in front of me. I did a double take because I thought she was naked from the waist down, but as I drove past I realised she was wearing those nude leggings.

MentholLoad · 21/07/2023 08:28

I just think this reflects you tbh....I don't see any of this on social media, because.... algorithm..and I follow loads of health and fitness/food people

and just go to a different gym 🤷🏼‍♀️ I've been to loads and in none of them are these people rife..I've never seen them

Ok…? 😂

Imagine, someone else having a different experience to you!

Catspyjamas17 · 21/07/2023 10:25

BeautifulWar · 21/07/2023 10:06

I agree they look horrible, but then I've never cared what I've worn to the gym or for exercise other then it being practical and comfortable. Never gone wearing a face full of make up or taken a photo either!

I go wearing makeup sometimes but only if it's in the evening or lunch time and I've been at work.

lieselotte · 21/07/2023 10:26

I saw a local personal trainer' Instagram feed the other day and was really surprised that she was showing so much flesh on it. Totally indecent with most of her bottom showing. Show off your ripped midriff by all means but keep your bottom under wraps (unless it's a locked feed I suppose and then you can choose who sees it).

Also men - keep your shirts on. They wick the sweat away from you and you stay cooler with a shirt on than without.

JudgeAnderson · 21/07/2023 10:26

I think it's disingenous to pretend that these leggings/shorts aren't designed to be massively sexualising.

lieselotte · 21/07/2023 10:26

WilkinsonM · 21/07/2023 08:01

Wearing a sports bra by itself without a top is much cooler and if I wasn't self conscious about my belly I'd do the same. The leggings are just a style. Sports leggings are much better to work out in than 'old black leggings' and at the moment it's just a trend. Nothing to criticise really.

Tech shirts are cooler than not wearing anything at all. And leggings don't have to be the nude colour.

Women want to be sexual on their own terms, not those dictated by someone else.

Explain

JudgeAnderson · 21/07/2023 10:30

And?

And that means it's relevant to the broader picture of women in society and it's okay to discuss without people wading in trying to shut the conversation down by calling people prudes, nasty or jealous.

3BSHKATS · 21/07/2023 10:31

They remind me of a baboon in the wild with its red bottom glowing when it’s fertile. I guess we’re all nothing but mammals.

lieselotte · 21/07/2023 10:32

Anyway if people want nice shorts and leggings, I get all of mine from a Devon company called Element Karbon :)

this is interesting I think

not disagreeing that society does sexualise women and girls

but is there any distinction between 'body enhancing' and sexualisation?? they do accentuate your ass and that is routed in sexualisation isn't it. but also it just looks good doesn't it. and it feels good to look good and fit and healthy

men wear 'muscle tops' etc to accentuate their physique. and I don't think that is always taken as them sexualising themselves

🤔

it's a sticky one still

lieselotte · 21/07/2023 10:35

ThePoshUns · 21/07/2023 06:52

Those shorts are awful but I'm still amazed that young women aspire to have big bottoms when I've spent a lifetime trying to make mine smaller!

Yes it's bizarre isn't it. The smaller the better for me, ditto bosoms Grin

merrymelodies · 21/07/2023 05:07

My DD confirms that these are a 'thing' at the gym and that some women don't actually bother to work out but just come in to take selfies. 😂

of their bums? 😂
