Since when did this become a thing?

I’ve recently joined a local gym having spent a lot of my adult life trying to avoid the place. Don’t have much social media so didn’t realise the new “trend” is to wear scrunch bum shorts and sports bras

Honestly so many females wearing this in my gym. I felt like the odd one out wearing a black tshirt and some old black leggings.

Ive always done running so in okay shape but I felt out of place in what I was wearing having just started. Maybe I just need to pay less attention to others 😂

@Groutyonehereagain Exactly. There’s nothing wrong with discussing our honest opinion about fashion.

I showed the pictures posted earlier in the thread of the scrunch bum shorts to my DD who is 9. Her honest reaction was “eugh, they’re horrible. I wouldn’t want to wear those.”

That is other people's problem, not the wearer. Women can wear what they like without being told off for it. Wind your neck in.

but it seems like they can't say what they like without a nasty comment?

mimi82 · 21/07/2023 09:34

You get accustomed to it, as do all the other regular gym-goers, and nobody bats an eyelid. To be fair to the gym bunnies, it is actually easier to see and check your form if you're not covered by a baggy T-shirt.

Most of the girls women going to my gym are twenty or thirty years my junior and wear skimpier clothing - but 99.5% of it looks comfortable and appropriate for exercise to me.

I used to wear just cropped tops and lycra shorts sometimes when I first started going to a gym in about 1993 - difficult as it was to find any exercise clothing aimed at women then. Or an all in one sleeveless leotard with shorts in 🙈

Actually yesterday I did break out my short lycra shorts for the first time, aged nearly 48, after going to the new gym for eight months- I feel much more confident about my legs and bum and the shorts are very comfortable for exercise, with more range of movement than the football or running type shorts I wear normally. I'm not quite there with getting my midriff out yet but perhaps I will one day. I will be on holiday, of course.

I'm really glad that so many young women are into physical fitness. DDs both love the gym. I think it's a good thing as long as it doesn't become obsessive- like anything really.

There is nothing wrong with them. I don't wear them but I wear pants and a sports bra.
I don't think judging women is a nice thing.

Not judging “women” but their taste. Sold to them by the fashion industry that it will make the wearer more appealing in whatever respect.

JusthereforXmas · 21/07/2023 09:37

Theres mostly old people at my gym when I go (maybe because I'm disabled so go at the 'gentle excersize' classes and times).

My MIL use to be a gym class instructor back in the last century and back then she literally wore bright colored spandex with a thong back leotard over top... I use to think they made that up for TV but it was an actual thing.

HowNice23 · 21/07/2023 09:38

It was a revelation to me when I realised I could shlep to the gym in baggy old trackie bottoms and baggy tee shirts and not have to piss about pulling on tiny bits of lycra!

Gingerboy22 · 21/07/2023 09:38

Let's face it they are not technical or performance enhancing are they? They are all about trying to look a certain way.

HeldAtHunPoint · 21/07/2023 09:38

Meh, pretty much all the girls at my gym wear these, can’t say it’s ever bothered me.

Personally I prefer gym leggings and my husband’s hand me down baggy running tops, but I have to disagree with those suggesting the girls wearing these go to the gym to take selfies and sit around chatting?

Not in my experience, they work out seriously hard and look amazing for it, good for them I think 🤷‍♀️ If anything I find it inspiring, then just get on with my own workout so I can get out of there asap..

You can say that about 99% of all clothing.

And your problem with that is...?

Can I just add, I’m not judging. My original post wasn’t judging, merely just surprised having been out of the gym seen for many years that this has become a thing. I also didn’t say that they looked bad!

Fashions change.

I'm surprised that surprises you OP.

whumpthereitis · 21/07/2023 09:46

I’ve got a few pairs of these from gymshark. I prefer them to regular leggings, they’re comfortable and supportive when squatting or focusing on legs. They don’t lose their shape and you don’t have to continuously pull them up between reps. They’re popular with women and men at my gym, particularly the power lifters.

Dontletsummerend · 21/07/2023 09:50

@ClaudiaWankleman no one is stopping anyone wearing anything though.
It makes me uncomfortable seeing arse cheeks hanging out of tiny shorts on the street but I have no problem with nudists on the beach. I am uncomfortable with people in hoodies and bandanas.

Trends affect us all. The fixation on a woman's sexuality being their USP is as strong as ever. You can see why the gender/ non binary thing feels edgy.

Flippertyfeckerty · 21/07/2023 06:58

Ok, I’m going to say it and then run & hide with my hard hat on…..
I really don’t get the juxtaposition of women shouting loudly “don’t sexualise/ objectify me” and then dressing in not very much/provocatively🤷🏼‍♀️. I mean, dress how you want but don’t complain about the reactions you get to it when you know that’ll be the end result!

Just, no.

AtomicBlondeRose · 21/07/2023 09:56

Baggy clothes are horrible to work out in. If I see someone running in heavy jogging bottoms and a baggy cotton t-shirt I think how miserable and hot they’ll be after a few minutes. A sports bra and shorts is lovely to work out in and you feel nice and cool in it. Also I feel so much more supported in Lycra over baggy stuff. So let’s not pretend these clothes have no workout value. They’re the best things to wear in all honesty.

There's nothing nasty in what I said. I said it as sharply as was deserved though.

Namechange666 · 21/07/2023 10:00

Well I'm overweight and I definitely don't have the body for these. I wear oversized tshirts so they don't cling and leggings.

I've been more worried about who is looking at me thinking I'm disgusting because of my size. But I'd rather people look at the gym ladies rather than the fat git in there haha!

Let people be.

Well, she's 9.

Why would you care what a 9 year old thinks about gym wear for adults in the gym? 🤔

That comment was intended to discourage the OP from wearing those shorts - that is a problem. Of course no one was physically stopping anyone doing anything via an internet comment, but the intent was still there.

Catspyjamas17 · 21/07/2023 10:03

I'm quite intrigued by the leggings, but I suspect they only work to enhance the bottom if you are slim already and want to look like you have a more rounded bottom. I suspect on a middle aged, even gym-going waist and already rounded enough thank you very much bottom they would probably look horrendous.

BeautifulWar · 21/07/2023 10:06

I agree they look horrible, but then I've never cared what I've worn to the gym or for exercise other then it being practical and comfortable. Never gone wearing a face full of make up or taken a photo either!

what is the point in this comment?? why would a 9 year old be interested in fashion aimed at enhancing your bum

my 19 year old daughter wears them to the gym with bra tops. because 1) she weight trains hard and sweats alot. it would be stupid and impractical to wear baggy heavy cotton clothing, and 2) because she wants to show off her tremendous ass

It was a revelation to me when I realised I could shlep to the gym in baggy old trackie bottoms and baggy tee shirts and not have to piss about pulling on tiny bits of lycra!

It was also a revelation to me that I can pitch up to the gym as an old fatty wearing technical, form fitting clothes and no one, especially me, gives a shit about what I look like. I run for at least an hour at full pelt and I sweat. A baggy t shirt doesn't work. Certainly anything baggy round the crotch is going to rub.
If some folk want to turn up looking amazing and doing nothing, good for them. Im getting on with my own shit. I don't choose to judge and I'd hope they don't judge me. Either way I don't care.
