Since when did this become a thing?

I’ve recently joined a local gym having spent a lot of my adult life trying to avoid the place. Don’t have much social media so didn’t realise the new “trend” is to wear scrunch bum shorts and sports bras

Honestly so many females wearing this in my gym. I felt like the odd one out wearing a black tshirt and some old black leggings.

Ive always done running so in okay shape but I felt out of place in what I was wearing having just started. Maybe I just need to pay less attention to others 😂

Is 42 too old for “ scrunch bunch shorts “ altho I’m not sure my teenage kids would approve. My husband, on the other hand , would love them but I suspect they wouldn’t stay on for long 😄

SilverArch · 21/07/2023 03:55

At 42, I think there is no excuse for thinking that these scrunchbum shorts are a good idea. It's worse than all those cropped tops and muffin middles. I say that as a person who told my mother that at over 80 it was perfectly acceptable to wear a knitted designer hoody.

Go for it!
Enjoy yourselves 😉

I'm with your husband, I think they look incredibly hot and it doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out why women under 30 are wearing them while those of us in our 40s are steering clear.

Also, the scrunch actually keeps the fabric out of your bum crack. That feeling you get with leggings as they ride up while you're sat on an exercise bike (for example) doesn't happen with these shorts or leggings - so people who are used to them find ordinary leggings uncomfortable. (This is all second had info, I'm 45 this year so not the target cheeks myself!).

I don’t see many people wearing these at my gym, but it’s just the current fashion on instagram and if you have the body for it, then why not! My 53 yo backside certainly couldn’t carry it off.

Au contraire, I still look good in just what my mother gave me, without a hint of cellulite. Good genes, or is that jeans?

itme · 21/07/2023 04:25

Loads wearing them at my gym too. I’m not a prude at all but they make me feel a bit uncomfortable - I don’t want to see anyone’s bum in that much detail apart from my partner’s. And I’m a big old lesbian so you might imagine that I’d be in women’s arse piercing heaven, but I’m not! It’s the scrunch but that does it - I’m not bothered about people wearing tight shorts and leggings, but something about these is so sexualised.

itme · 21/07/2023 04:25

Perving. Arse perving. I am not a weirdo who sneaks around piercing peoples arses.

I wear leggings and old t shirts and look old and tired, next to all the young women in these and similar

And underneath my tired old leggings and t shirt, my UNDERWEAR is more substantial than what they're wearing 😆

Mumof2teens79 · 21/07/2023 05:00

Yeah, I'd say so

Tistheseason17 · 21/07/2023 05:04

So, I have a pair of leggings with this butt in black. Bought 2 yrs ago - I'm nit trendy and they were fir holding everything in place, nice comfy high waist.
I have a sagging, shapeless old ass, but these leggings hold it all in and I get sooo many compliments.
Cannot feel a butt scrunch or pull at all- super comfy. Very much an external look to flatter rather than cause a wedgy.
Don't knock 'em til you've tried them.

Riapia · 21/07/2023 05:05

😂😂😂😂

merrymelodies · 21/07/2023 05:07

My DD confirms that these are a 'thing' at the gym and that some women don't actually bother to work out but just come in to take selfies. 😂

fluffi · 21/07/2023 05:25

They look great on many people at my gym who regularly lower body train with weights. They’ve put many hours (often years) into getting stronger, fitter and shaping their figure why wouldn’t they want to show it off?

And yes they also take selfies but a lot of that is about tracking progress to gauge how a routine / diet is working.

If people are comfortable in t-shirts and trackies that’s ok too, as long as people:clothes don’t smell bad before workout has started no one cares! (Smelly people pre-workout in the gym 🤢🤮)

allthewaytobeanotown · 20/07/2023 22:49

People wear all sorts at my gym so I don't really recognise what you're describing.

I used to be an avid runner and was in a running club and no runner ever looked 'in shape', though. Either scrawny or normal. Running doesn't change anyone's shape IME.

Maybe the gym folk you are seeing are proud of their bodies and want to show them off. That's ok.

They're definitely a craze at my gym. I think they're horrible but each to their own I suppose.

They’re not decent and you’re making other people uncomfortable.

I notice the selfies too - I take them to track my progress but I do it at home, not in the gym. The gym is for working out IMO, not for stopping someone else use equipment while they stand in front of their favourite machine and take 20 selfies til they get one they like, as happened to me last night.

My friend calls them 'look at me don't dare look at me but look at me' leggings.

Ihaventgottimeforthis · 21/07/2023 06:10

For everyone 'sweating profusely' in leggings and a baggy t shirt, try shorts & a vest. Really helps.

I'm not keen on the scrunch bum aesthetic but that's fine I'm not wearing them. Plus I think they would run on the rowing machine.

No worse than mr motivator or rosemary connely. Wear what you want no one else gives a
Shit.

I didn't ever see the outline of rosemary Connelly's vag and clitoris back then though. I can't really not see it now at most gyms.

HaveYouHeardOfARoadAtlas · 21/07/2023 06:24

My gym is scrunch bum leggings for the ones in their 20s, maybe 30s. Sweaty Betty for the 40plus. I wear Next and M&S! 😁

Donotshushme · 21/07/2023 06:30

Is there a little bit of jealousy here that these women are so confident in themselves they'll wear something like this while you lot are trudging around in baggy t shirts and leggings? They're at the gym to work out. They don't need to hide their bodies if they don't want to. Do you judge men wearing tight shorts as well?

I have no skin in this game, I don't go to the gym and i wouldn't wear these shorts but envy is a bad, bad look.

One of the main reasons i don't go to the gym is fear that someone is judging what i look like. It doesn't make it ok to do that just because the woman in question is young and fit (i am neither).

happywotsit · 21/07/2023 06:32

The odd thing is, i don't see those shorts or leggings like that at my gym but they are evident in town on a Saturday worn by younger girls. They empasise everything.

Terven · 21/07/2023 05:49

Why's that her problem? She's wearing something she feels good in. If other people don't like it, they could just not look.

I've pointed this out on another thread but I notice the photos on the shorts ad don't show the full rear view, i.e the radiating lines of the scrunch, all in a circle, that look like a gigantic arsehole.

I think they look like a big saggy puckered arsehole too. I imagine they need a really good wash after a short wear too..
