Since when did this become a thing?

I’ve recently joined a local gym having spent a lot of my adult life trying to avoid the place. Don’t have much social media so didn’t realise the new “trend” is to wear scrunch bum shorts and sports bras

Honestly so many females wearing this in my gym. I felt like the odd one out wearing a black tshirt and some old black leggings.

Ive always done running so in okay shape but I felt out of place in what I was wearing having just started. Maybe I just need to pay less attention to others 😂

they don't go up your arse crack. it's just mild ruching

Sounds worse 😂

Morgysmum · 22/07/2023 18:18

That's one of the reasons, I don't go to the gym. I am on the fatter side. But always turn a shade of red even running for a bus, same after I dropped 2 stone. I put on comfy clothes, sports bra under my T-shirt. Jogging bottoms on the bottom half.
But you always have what I call the gym bunnies, spend hours pounding on a treadmill, who look down there nose at you, as you work out.
It seems to be the red, sweaty faced over weight person, is a problem for some.
It is always the women, I got the dirty look off, men at the gym don't care, I wiped down the equipment after I use it, something the bunnies didn't bother, I guess following the rules is below them too.
So I stopped going, not just for that reason.

katseyes7 · 22/07/2023 19:07

I work in a supermarket, and we get a lot of younger women in dressed like that. I don't know if they're going to/from the gym, or just wearing them because they like them. To be fair, all the ones l've seen have the figure for them.
I'd look like a bag of set cement.

Oh, no - as I said upthread @katseyes7 our sixth form girls dress like that for school. It's a popular look with young women.

MissingMoominMamma · 22/07/2023 19:16

Finally, my big, sticky out arse is in vogue! Gonna get me some of those beauties! (not really).

Maireas · 22/07/2023 19:17

Go for it! They wear these puckered leggings, often in nude, with a matching crop top. It's like a uniform.

GoosieLucy · 22/07/2023 19:20

Good on them for feeling comfortable enough and confident enough in their own skin to to wear them.
I work in a gym and see the filthy, judgemental looks the young women get from from predominantly 40+ women. Sad really.

LovingPuertoRico · 22/07/2023 19:21

Surely it doesn’t matter what a person is wearing to a gym frankly it’s none of your business anyway

Bunchymcbunchface · 22/07/2023 19:21

Helpful for Insta and OF content.
they’re actually surprisingly comfortable. I have them and wear them out and about doing the horses. They don’t tend to be as restrictive as actual heavy Lycra leggings which I found used to pull down across the bum and crotch. Maybe that’s just my shape though

readingmynightaway · 22/07/2023 19:25

Please tell me these are not made of polyester and spandex 😬
That material makes me cringe as much as the shorts.

lookingforchangenowww · 22/07/2023 19:27

I’m with you.
the trends now a days are hideous.
Too much !!!

Ilovecleaning · 22/07/2023 19:32

TomatoSandwiches · 20/07/2023 22:51

I don't pay much attention to others at the gym, I'm there for me no-one else.

Well good for you! 😂

BananananaX · 22/07/2023 19:53

I tend to just mind my own business. I do however frequently attend with scrunch bum shorts up my arse because I have a fantastic bum and I’ve put a lot of hard work into having a nice body after years of being a fat whale 🤪

Princessconsuelabananahammock9 · 21/07/2023 13:48

This thread is painfully misogynistic.

If you don't like them, don't wear them. Simple. No need to shame women over them.

This 100% 👏@Princessconsuelabananahammock9

Simbaiamyourfather · 22/07/2023 21:10

Sorry this is me, I live in Gymshark shorts and sports bras at the gym. But I'm almost 40 and honestly don't care what people think, I'm comfortable in what I'm wearing ( I hate it when baggy sweaty clothes touch my skin 😂). I work hard and don't pay attention to what anyone else is wearing, at the end of the day everyone is there for the same reason.

LolaSmiles · 22/07/2023 21:13

I’m not for modesty but these look like you’re hiding a Cornish pasty in your arse crack.
😂
The next time I see these shorts that image is going to jump into my head.

puddleduckmummy · 22/07/2023 21:43

God forbid a person wears what they want to wear, doing their own workout 🙄

ZeldaWillTellYourFortune · 22/07/2023 21:44

It's not misogynistic to opine that certain fashions are a) unflattering and b) not suitable for public wear.

People need to stop slapping that label on anything that is even remotely critical of behaviour practiced by women.

Moonshine5 · 22/07/2023 22:44

It is fitting to use the expression misogyny as it's being used prejudicially against women, fashion has no absolutes - it is in the eye of the beholder. To say 'I don't like it' is very different to saying 'it reflects your mentality'. If we are talking about psychology remember your opinions reflect you. Personally I have no skin in the game but remember that Mumsnet is supporting community.

Branster · 22/07/2023 22:47

@ZeldaWillTellYourFortune at last the voice of reason!
I completely agree with you.
Some trends are simply unflattering regardless of the size/shape of the wearer and some clothes are not suitable for wearing in public.

BLT24 · 22/07/2023 22:48

Half of Manchester had these on today for shopping 😂

I wear what I want to & I feel comfortable in when I manage to get the the gym.
Don’t watch the gym bunnies, social media or gym fashion at all.
Do your thing, let them do theirs & wipe equipment before & after use.

Because men showcasing what they have on show has other connotations.

No, the same connotations. Whether it's men in cycling lycra, women in bum scrunchers, Brazilian beachwear, anything at all to do with the aerobics craze or 1970s fashion - for women and men the message is "My body's got sex parts (and I know how to use them)".

It's very fundamentally human.

Some other apes have built-in signalling when ready for sex. Humans are always 'ready', our bodies don't radically change to show readiness, and we wear clothes. So we have the option to use clothes for that purpose.

There's no good reason not to.

Helen483 · 23/07/2023 00:21

Seriously?!? Why are you even looking at what other women are wearing in the gym? Are you there to exercise or to socialise? If for exercise then just get on and do your routine in your leggings and t-shirt (which is what I wear to the gym). If you're there to socialise then I suggest a different activity (like badminton or a running club)
