The joy of a new notebook

I'm surely not the only one? I was telling dh that I've almost finished my current notebook and that it's exciting because it means I get to start my new one. It's a beautiful notebook - it has a gold, shiny cover - and I've got the nice gold shimmer ink to use in it.

When I said all this, Dh looked at me like I've got two heads, as did one of my dc (the other has a better understanding of all things stationery).

Light-hearted question obviously, but do you get excited by new notebooks?

Both my dc use a lamy safari with an extra fine nib. Generally speaking, I think that if you have small writing, a fine nib is better. The lamy is fairly cheap so if you don't get on with it you haven't blown loads of money and it has a shaped grip section so you know where and how to hold it.

Thank you, I shall investigate.

I love a new notebook, there's always something so special about the way the feel. They make me very happy

ssd · 21/07/2023 21:52

I love a notebook.

I currently have 3 or 4 on the go....

vipersnest1 · 21/07/2023 21:53

I use a fountain pen - and never write in blue or black!

BumWhisperers · 21/07/2023 21:56

That's beautiful!

shadypines · 21/07/2023 22:57

Excuse me while I get 'deep' on why we love notebooks...DD and I talk about our theory of the 'caveman brain' ..in other words, the things we had the need/desire to do as cave people which still exists today. Writing and drawing are ancient pastimes or rather things we feel 'driven' to do, think the Egyptians etc.
The latest buzzword is AI but I'm not interested. Give me a notebook or colouring pencils any day!

IfLoveBelievesInMe · 21/07/2023 22:59

New notebook...there is no feeling like it! One of those little pockets of bliss on life's journey.

HotSauceNow · 21/07/2023 23:07

I use notebooks daily in my work to make notes, list actions etc. I am liking the Flame Tree foiled journals. A good size, a firm back and some lovely designs. At about £10 each they aren’t cheap but nor are they that expensive. They are decent quality for the price and seeing as I look at them multiple times a day they give me pleasure. I probably get through about 5 a year.

They're beautiful @HotSauceNow 😍

That theory sounds interesting @shadypinesand neither am I at all bothered about using ai for anything much at the moment!

That's the great thing about fountain pens - you can choose your ink to suit your mood - you can even experiment with mixing colours and types.

I'm another stationery addict, but also don't quite get what everything is writing in their notebooks, if it's not writing a book or something. Is it lists? I keep them in my brain. Or thoughts? I keep them in my brain too!!! Could someone please post a picture of a page from their notebook (obviously nothing of an identifiable or personal nature).

ChicoryDip · 22/07/2023 00:09

I have found my people!

These are my all-time favourite work notebooks. Like a PP I prefer squared paper and an A4 book. There is something lovely about numbered pages and an index at the front.

I am now looking at the shimmer inks linked above and wondering whether I need a new fountain pen.

I mainly use mine at work - daily to-do lists, notes from meetings, thoughts about my projects etc. It's a technical environment - lots of engineers with bog standard A4 ruled notepads - so me and my fancy-pants pad, fountain pen and jazzy coloured diamine inks is a tiny act of rebellion Grin

I also use the Flame Tree note books linked above, btw, they're lovely.

My work one has addresses of the schools I am going to, plus details of mileage, school timetable and office telephone number. I also note down hours worked and wages due.

@MyMachineAndMe
When I'm learning a new subject I like to write my notes about it, then it helps me learn more,
Yes there's printing but if I'm reading and copying or resummerising, the information then it helps me to learn it.

MyMachineAndMe · 21/07/2023 15:35

I don't have any deep or meaningful thoughts so I do sometimes feel that I'm not doing my fancy notebooks the justice they deserve by writing my banal thoughts in them, but that's what I do. I am a Mass Observer as well so make notes for the directives in one of my books.

I didn't know what a Mass Observer was. Just looked it up. How interesting!

HollyGolightly4 · 22/07/2023 06:39

I love this thread and I love notebooks!

My preference is hard back, not ring bound and an off-white paper.

I have a dilemma - I ordered a mid year academic diary from Papier to treat myself. It's arrived and the colour is grey (I hate grey, it looked blue on the website). The design is pretty though.

I've emailed them and they've offered a refund or 20% off. What would you do?

I feel like the refund is so bad for the environment! It's a personalised one too.

I love writing in fountain pen but only have a parker and use blue ink via generic cartridges. Stupid question, how do you use the glorious gold you jihad previously?
I'm a journal girl, it never leaves my side and I'm going to start a notebook too for a new job, so I'm trying to decide if I use any of ny freebie notebooks or treat myself to one....
I have just set up my journal for the 2nd half of the year and trying out washi tape. I used to use it in my filofax.

FYI if anyone is looking for dotted notebooks, amazon has 'Scribbles that Matters, a5, 160gsm' on offer...I might have bought 2024's 1st book already.
Also passed it on to DD who starts 6th form this year and is building her journal.... ❤️

This is the one my DD has, slightly thinner paper than nine but lovely.

How thick are the flame tree paper pages? I'm looking but can't see a GSM listed. Fountain pen usually needs decent thickness, I find.

I use mine as an old fashioned diary and dump whatever my brain is thinking onto paper. It helps me to process my thoughts and make sense of the day.

Working from the back pages I track my weight loss and note life goals.

This is a great idea, using from front and back! That's what's always stopped me, I wonder how you write about multiple subjects. I've tried before and had loads of coloured page markers sticking out, and didn't like it 😂

Jellycatrabbit · 22/07/2023 07:25

Ooh me too.

I have a meal plan book (A5), a to do list book for home and another for work (both A6), and an A4 work notebook. I recently career changed and am now an accountant and hardly need to use my work notebook which makes me sad!

I am however currently on a pen and notebook no buy as I have whole drawers of each.

Floral patterns and bees are my greatest weakness, so am not brand loyal.

GalileoHumpkins · 22/07/2023 08:33

I mostly use my notebooks as knitting/crochet journals, I like to keep notes of my projects. I also use one to keep a list of books to read, I have dreams of keeping a beautiful reading journal but it hasn't happened yet!

EATmum · 22/07/2023 09:14

We've just spent a week sorting out 'stuff' at home and creating order out of chaos. I was ruthless about getting rid of anything we didn't need - except the 40 odd notebooks that I seem to have accumulated.

I have a stationery addiction.
