Songs that make you cry

Made myself a playlist of my most meaningful songs - a sort of 'Desert island Discs' if you will. I was sat listening to it on the bus this morning and when 'Slipping Through My Fingers' by Abba came on, I just couldn't help but get emotional. My son is only six so definitely not flying the nest, but that song just gets me.
I would love to know what songs make others cry?

Dance with my father by Luther Vandross. I haven't even lost my dad or anything, it just kills me listening to it

Badbadbunny · 14/07/2023 12:08

"I honestly love you" by Olivia Newton John.

Never used to affect me, but I've always loved it as it's a beautiful song, sung by a beautiful person, but was the first of her songs I listened to on the day her death was announced (it was on my ONJ spotify random play list) and I couldn't stop blubbing, and now I tear up every time I hear it.

"Have yourself a very merry Christmas" has me bawling every single time.... have no idea why

ABBA Dancing Queen.

My mum was the biggest ABBA fan and she would always put on the old vinyls and dance around the living room like a teenager.

She died really young, younger than I am now, and everytime I hear it I bawl my eyes out thinking of that young woman who never danced again.

Concrete Angel and God's Will... Both by Martina McBride.

Heart of stone from Six

Dancing queen - ABBA. That excitement of going out dancing not knowing who you would meet. The thrill! I mourn those days as a middle aged exhausted mum of 2! I'm excited for the DC though.

Lately by Stevie Wonder

I surprised myself crying when Cat Stevens sang “Morning Has Broken” on the BBC from Glastonbury. I used to sing the song to my babies. They are 17 and 19yo now.
Sometimes I miss my babies🥲

Tell me it's not true - Blood Brothers
Coat of many colours - Dolly Parton

ceecee32 · 14/07/2023 12:35

Photographs and memories - Jim.Croce

Reminds me of a love which never came to be

Tears in heaven

Our farewell by Within temptation.

The verses switch about so it's either the mother talking to the child or the child talking to the mother

came on to name that exact song. My mum was dying when I was pg with my first child 20 years ago. Remember so clearly crying when it came on the radio in the car. Still gets me every time.

dexterslockedintheshedagain · 14/07/2023 12:46

Feel my love by Adele.
It was on the radio when DH drove me into hospital after I'd lost our baby.
I cannot hear it without tearing up, even now, 12 years later.

Ambertonix · 14/07/2023 12:50

Monsters by James Blunt and I Hope You Dance by Lee Ann Womack.

RaininSummer · 14/07/2023 13:01

Wonderful world by Louis Armstrong. Dad's funeral tune that I picked.

MenopauseSucks · 14/07/2023 13:39

You are my sunshine

My Mum used to sing it to me when I was little & I sang it to her repeatedly when she was dying. I'm not sure if she was even aware of my singing but it gave me a lot of comfort.

GuitarsInHeaven · 14/07/2023 14:11

I’m not gonna miss you by Glen Campbell

Its about him having Alzheimer’s and I just find it really sad.

Lewis Capaldi Before You Go and Zach Bryan Half Grown also make me cry.

Elodie09 · 14/07/2023 14:21

These are the days of our lives. I was just thinking about this song this morning and how utterly heartbreaking Freddie was in his video.

Big big world by Emilia, i made a slideshow for my dd before she went travelling. She didnt come home, not for any bad reason she met someone and moved 4000 miles away. Im glad she is happy but i miss her and the song makes me cry when I think of all the mum & daughter spontaneous trips or dropping in visits we will never have.

YouveCatToBeKittenMe · 14/07/2023 14:36

Also shakespeares sister ‘stay’ it was in the chart when my mum was dying and i wanted her to stay.

ive made this thread miserable, sorry!

PinkiOcelot · 14/07/2023 14:37

Everybody hurts - REM

Funnily enough, also the ABBA song you mentioned. My daughter painted my nails for me for my holidays and put that song on whilst she did. It did make me laugh but also emotional as she’s gone off to Fiji with Uni until September and I’m missing her already.

MichelleScarn · 14/07/2023 14:39

Monsters by James Blunt
Living Years, Mike and mechanics

PerrinAybara · 14/07/2023 14:39

Bright Eyes by Art Garfunkel (from Watership Down). I always associate it with my cat passing away.

LakeTiticaca · 14/07/2023 14:40

Cliff Richard: Miss you nights

Mark Knopfler &Emmie Lou Harris: If this is goodbye
