Rishi triumphs over the teaching unions!

He has managed to beat the teaching unions into submission and to call off strikes by:

Offering them a pay deal worth more than double the original government recommendation

Giving schools extra funding to pay for it.

Well done Rishi, you really showed them!

Arse

Ihaveamagicwand · 13/07/2023 13:46

Rishi sees sense?

MrsALambert · 13/07/2023 13:46

Such a tit. I’m too sceptical of this government to believe anything until I see it sadly

Oh, there’s also a commitment to reduce teacher workload, so less work for more pay 👍

Kevin Courtney of the NEU says

We have reassurances that this extra money will not come from any frontline services, including
Special Educational Needs (SEND) funding,
Schools’ capital
Nursery schools or
16-19 funding.

He’s our saviour!! Well done Rishi!

MrsBennetsPoorNerves · 13/07/2023 13:47

Excellent. Well done teachers!

I want to see the detail before I believe that the government is actually going to give schools enough to fund the pay increase.

MMorales · 13/07/2023 13:49

Listened to him speaking

So sanctimonious

I wont increase your taxes or borrowing, but the money will have to be found from somewhere.

Sure it would be easy to find if they stop pissing it down the drain in contracts to their mates.

They’re giving schools an extra 3%, so not the full whack, but more than they were giving for the 4.5% offer that they said was ‘affordable on average’ and there will be a hardship fund for schools who fall into the “still can’t afford” category.

All those saying 'your strikes are pointless' might have to have a rethink.

It remains the only way to take a stand and it needs to be a right protected at all costs.

GrammarTeacher · 13/07/2023 13:56

So better (but still) part funded

orangeleavesinautumn · 13/07/2023 13:56

but is it funded though, @noblegiraffe ? or rather is it funded enough?

Right. So not properly funded at all. Angry

It will have to be a pretty enormous hardship fund to touch the sides of the shortfall.

The reality will almost certainly mean redundancies in the school where I'm a governor. There is nothing else left to cut and we have already eaten significantly into our reserves to cover the last unfunded pay increase.

We know that other local schools are in an even worse position, so I'm guessing we won't be at the front of the queue for help.

Pleased for the teachers because they absolutely deserve the increase, but very concerned about the impact on schools if the government doesn't fund it properly.

lucette1001 · 13/07/2023 14:08

Give everybody what they're asking for and when Labour gets in, perhaps a note in the Treasury to say there's no money left.... oops, deja vu

elderflowerandpomelo · 13/07/2023 14:11

It’s insane. Half that rise comes out of school budgets directly. The rest comes from DfE the budget (not increasing) - what will they be cutting to make that possible?

our school budgets have shrunk by 30% in real terms since 2010. There is no more fat to cut, anywhere.

Exactly. The idea that this can somehow be found from efficiency savings in existing school budgets is pie in the sky. There is nothing left to cut.

The teachers and other public sector workers have my full support, but if the government is going to agree to pay increases, then it needs to find the money to pay for them.

42isthemeaning · 13/07/2023 14:18

Slow 👏🏻 👏🏻 👏🏻

JackSheepskin · 13/07/2023 14:25

Nice to see how he shafted the Army again, knowing they can’t strike, but backed down to the teachers.

lastminutewednesday · 13/07/2023 14:33

Great. Until we realise the money will probably come from
The social care budget, which is always the one that gets plundered because it's not high profile and no one really seems to give a rats arse about it.

Plunkplink · 13/07/2023 14:43

We should pay more tax, I’d rather pay more tax than have to pay for private health insurance or try and pay for private schools.
funny though isn’t it the mainly male and institutionally racist and misogynistic police get 7% . The mainly female teachers get 5%. I’d still be striking if I was a teacher.

MrsBennetsPoorNerves · 13/07/2023 14:45

I thought it was 6.5% for teachers?

Giraffesanddance · 13/07/2023 14:50

So not fully funded but has been accepted.

If it is only 3% extra ( and is that the bit from DfE re prioritisation) then the joint statement is really misleading tbh.

Giraffesanddance · 13/07/2023 14:50

Or rather recommended to accept. Obviously not accepted yet

Giraffesanddance · 13/07/2023 14:52

Or is it nearly fully funded for schools - so the extra 3% on top of the 3% already coming?
