My daughter isn't so little she cant be left unsupervised with a tablet but she watches peppa pig each night on YouTube I was ok with clips of it as it's free. It's come to light that she has bought loads of the episodes/entire seasons which have added up, she didn't realise how much it was adding up to but it has cost me money I can't afford to lose and was spent last week. I found out after there wasnt enough money in my direct debit account to cover the cost of the shopping over the weekend. I understand I cant be refunded for what she has watched but there are a lot of unwatched episodes can I get a refund for this or should I not bother trying

When you say “she can be left unsupervised with a tablet”….

Needmorelego · 12/07/2023 18:37

I’m confused because I have never needed to make a payment to watch YouTube. Surely Peppa Pig is available for free on the Channel 5 website.
Who has the payment actually been paid too?
Why are your bank details linked to youtube?

You can buy TV shows and movies to watch on YouTube.

How did she put your payment details into Youtube? That's pretty advanced for someone young enough to be watching Peppa Pig!

Needmorelego · 12/07/2023 18:40

@cinnamonfrenchtoast I genuinely did not know that !

AmbleInAnnBoleyn · 12/07/2023 18:41

You need to delink your debit or credit card immediately.

Your bank might be able to assist you in obtaining a refund/partial refund.

GalileoHumpkins · 12/07/2023 18:42

How are your bank details linked to YouTube? Do you pay for the ad-free subscription?

empatheticpretzel · 12/07/2023 18:42

she isn't the typical age to be watching peppa pig and is old enough to know better. She had clicked buy and it automatically charged to my debit card without her having to enter anything yes I had my bank details linked to it but I really didn't think she would do this

How much has she spent?
Do you get email notifications when a purchase is made?

PinkFrogss · 12/07/2023 18:48

Like you say, she’s too young to be left unsupervised.

I mean there’s no harm in trying, I’ve heard of people get in app purchases made by their child refunded from Apple. I wouldn’t bank on it though.

Lesson well learned for the future

Star0Fire · 12/07/2023 18:52

Surely you'll be able to contact YT and get a refund

empatheticpretzel · 12/07/2023 18:57

I will give it a go and see what they say

Contact their customer services, emphasise that it was a young child who didn't understand it was costing real money, be EXTREMELY polite and complimentary and plead poverty. They might agree to refund some of it.

Then unlink all payment methods off google and also go into your tablet settings and disable in-app purchases.

Then download the youtube kids app. It doesn't have ads for things they can spend money on. Or the channel 5 on demand app as somebody else said, where the episodes are available for free.

BibbleandSqwauk · 12/07/2023 19:02

Please for the love of god install some security..there are plenty of parental apps out there.

Zarataralara · 12/07/2023 19:02

I’d also make sure your card isn’t linked for automatic payments on Amazon or any other site.

DamaskRosie · 12/07/2023 19:04

I don't think OP is saying she can't be left unsupervised with a tablet, but that she isn't so little that she can't be left unsupervised with a tablet, ie she's big enough to be left unsupervised.

empatheticpretzel · 12/07/2023 19:12

She spent over £30

I think you have to take this on the chin tbh. Why should you be refunded for an entirely preventable charge?

If she's old enough to know better then you deduct the money from her savings or future birthday/Christmas money.

Or sell some of her stuff.

xyz111 · 12/07/2023 19:26

On my iPad it's set to ask for fingerprint ID for purchases. I think you need to turn that on!

TheSmallAssassin · 12/07/2023 19:29

Set your account to request password or fingerprint for every purchase.

nasanas · 12/07/2023 19:30

No, YOU are old enough to know better.

You are responsible.

I know you mean well but that would be quite harsh, she is a child. She also doesn't understand punishments, if you were to take something away because of her behaviour she cant corelate the two and think you are just being evil. I have to parent her in a particular way. But this thread was about whether or not I could get a refund
