My daughter isn't so little she cant be left unsupervised with a tablet but she watches peppa pig each night on YouTube I was ok with clips of it as it's free. It's come to light that she has bought loads of the episodes/entire seasons which have added up, she didn't realise how much it was adding up to but it has cost me money I can't afford to lose and was spent last week. I found out after there wasnt enough money in my direct debit account to cover the cost of the shopping over the weekend. I understand I cant be refunded for what she has watched but there are a lot of unwatched episodes can I get a refund for this or should I not bother trying

'She is a child'

'She doesn't understand punishments'

'She is old enough to know better'

Make it make sense OP

YallaYallaaa · 12/07/2023 19:37

Does she have SEN op? If so mention that when you try to wrangle a refund.

SomethingNastyInTheGenePool · 12/07/2023 19:37

How old is she? And does she have a learning disability?

So it sounds as if there are additional needs. Have you parental controls in place to prevent her accessing other sites?

Tempone · 12/07/2023 19:38

How old is she...its your issue you need to have passwords set up.

nasanas · 12/07/2023 19:39

If she has additional needs that mean she doesn't understand why is OP saying she is old enough to know better?

fourlambbhunas · 12/07/2023 19:43

My nephew spent hundreds (intentionally) on PlayStation and they were really good about it and refunded my sis when she called them in a panic after finding out x

Prinnny · 12/07/2023 19:45

How old is she? My friend once got money back from a similar thing but they wanted proof of the child’s age, she had to send a photo of her passport in.

BendingSpoons · 12/07/2023 19:47

Do we have to give the OP a hard time here? She made a mistake not setting up controls but leaving a child watching an Ipad without sitting right next to them checking is hardly unusual behaviour.

I would contact whoever you can ( who it was purchased from, the app store and maybe your bank) and explain. You don't lose anything by trying. I had a free trial of Fitbit Premium and missed the emails that it was renewing because they went to my Gmail account which I don't use (it has to be set up with a google email). I hadn't used it. I didn't expect to get the money back but I did.

Depends on the age...10? not unusual..child should know better. Three? then yes should be supervised

Time to get her own tablet and put all the child locks on. No chance of her making any future purchases. I doubt you will get a refund.

empatheticpretzel · 12/07/2023 18:42

she isn't the typical age to be watching peppa pig and is old enough to know better. She had clicked buy and it automatically charged to my debit card without her having to enter anything yes I had my bank details linked to it but I really didn't think she would do this

She clearly is not old enough to know better though. She did it! You are responsible for it.

empatheticpretzel · 12/07/2023 20:11

I'm not saying im not responsible for it but it was a mistake and she knew she shouldnt have

Right, so now you realise you are responsible, can you then see that means you have no grounds to be refunded?

I dont expect to be refunded for what shes watched but it could be reasonable to ask a refund for the ones that are unwatched

Just ask and find out. But be a tad more specific than you have been here

WhimHoff · 12/07/2023 20:18

YouTube kids going forwards? Make sure you don’t give a child access to purchases at the click of a button?

user01082312345 · 12/07/2023 20:19

I know my brother has his tablet set so it requires his fingerprint before any purchases are made, on YouTube, Amazon etc. to prevent his 8 year old daughter doing that

Sparkleshine21 · 12/07/2023 20:19

YouTube kids app, also peppa is free on my5 and Netflix is 6.99 a month, all the peppa pigs are on it (or they were two years ago when my daughter was into it).

Irequireausername · 12/07/2023 20:21

£30 is a cheap lesson that your daughter needed to learn. Now she knows that she shouldn't buy online.

I've known kids much older who spent considerably more. You don't realise it right now OP, but you're lucky!

BlockedButWhy · 12/07/2023 20:31

What a pain, OP 🙈 I'll try and help a little as I work for a bank.

You need to contact YouTube first to ask for a refund. Keep/screenshot any engagement you have with them. The bank cannot assist until that part is completed first, you'll need to have that to hand as proof (not always but often). If YouTube refuse a refund you can contact your bank to enquire about putting through a dispute, it'll be called a VISA dispute or something similar.
However, I do stress, that often times when you have an automatic payment option set up on your personal device and a payment has been made using your own bank details it can be very tricky getting your money back. I would say most times it'll be rejected (there's always something in your T&C's somewhere stating to keep your bank details safe, don't allow others to use your account etc, etc.), but it is not impossible and every bank will have a certain leniency criteria (within reason).
But, realistically speaking, the money should be refunded by YouTube only. It's not a scam/fraud etc. it's certainly not the banks fault. So going direct to YouTube is your best bet here. The bank can definitely help you as much as possible, and it can be lengthy with no guarantees.

I hope you get it sorted, you are absolutely not the first and last who will go through this, I'm sure! I think there's a YouTube kids app, I would make another Google profile with no bank details attached and let her use that instead.

user01082312345 · 12/07/2023 20:35

Btw if you are going to contact YouTube and they refuse to refund, make a bank threat ("I'm going to contact my bank.")

This might work. I worked in the billing department for adult entertainment websites, and if the customer issued a bank threat, we refunded everything within the last 120 days

Thanks but out of interest, whats wrong with a bank threat?

She's way too young to be left unsupervised with YouTube. Lots of inappropriate content.

You got off lightly. Lock your devices down.
