Acceptable to whom? Acceptable to his wife? Well that is up to her. Why does any member of the public get to judge the acceptability of this?

that's literally how the law evolves, it reflects the standards of society that we come to based on discussing things like this. This may not be illegal, maybe that changes maybe it doesn't. But we as a society often discuss things involving young people because it is our job to protect them. I have a 17 year old, it is far too young to have someone of this age and power doing this to them. I also do not want someone like this in his position at a publicly owned broadcaster

mastertomsmum · 12/07/2023 19:26

It’s all a bit Frank Bough, for those of us old enough to remember.

His wife also said he was only aware of allegations made against him last Thursday - which doesn't tally with what the young parents AND the BBC have said 🙄

The parents said they approached the bbc in may, at no point has any claim been made that anyone approached huw in may. Since the bbc have already said that they didn't get any response to further queries back then why would you assume they'd tell him? They likely assumed it was a fake complaint.

She’ll be divorcing him into the next millennium. Take everything Mrs Huw! Dirty bastard

@Guineapigwoes , no crime has been committed. I feel very sorry for the poor man, his wife and children. I’m not in agreement that he deserves to be called a dirty bastard. We know very little of what has bought him to this place.

For fuck sake nothing has been proven against him wait until/if it is before piling on

Even the accusers lawyer says no crime has been committed.

It's another Cliff Richard.

'Nothing inappropriate' in BBC presenter row - young person's lawyer

Claims being made by the mother at the heart of the BBC presenter row are "rubbish", a lawyer says.

Human nature to judge...
Police say not illegal but paying a 17 year old significant sums of money for sexually explicit photos is morally wrong imo. A 17 year old is still a child and I think vulnerable, 61 year old man, especially one wth a high profile success career , should know better. I dont know if he has kids but its basically like paying your childs friend for sexually explicit photos.
Personally I think there has to be an element of judgement around morality otherwise its a free for all society.
His actions, although not illegal, do bring the BBC into disrepute. His high profile, high salary and being responsible for delivering important news to the nation( such as the Queens death) puts him in a different position to someone who, for example, works in a supermarket.
I think he should resign and then I think we should leave him , his family, the teenager and their family all in peace.

Just flashed up on my news app
Obviously not a surprise and he has resigned now

Apparently the BBC made a mistake. He has not resigned.

LakeTiticaca · 12/07/2023 19:38

He's done it to himself unfortunately. Hardly in keeping with the values of a committed Christian, is it?

Romeiswheretheheartis · 12/07/2023 19:40

No but he shouldn't lose his job over it. Cheaters don't lose their jobs in "normal life".

He's not just a 'cheater' though. That suggests a relationship between two people of equal status. A 61 yr old man with a highly respected public image sending sexually explicit messages to teenagers is not 'cheating', it's an abuse of power and has brought his employer into disrepute. His job is to report on news which includes stories about morally dubious behaviour. He absolutely should lose his job now that his own behaviour has become the news.

How would you feel if it was your daughter sending the pictures?

Don't you think it is the daughter who you should talk to first. Being A younger adult doesn't necessarily mean less responsibility for their own behaviour

Genuine question, why the support for Huw Edwards and not Philip Schofield? His liason wasn't illegal either (not particularly a fan, just curious)

With phillip schofield he met the boy when he was under 16 and is rumoured to have got him the job on this morning when the boy was 19. So more clear cut case of abuse of power. There are also indications of using his status to benefit another much younger man.

It's all a far cry from the tormented closeted gay shtick he came out with in 2020

Phillip Schofield 'abused his fame' to help friend escape with lenient sentence

The former This Morning presenter gave a character reference for a friend named Ben Perryman who admitted an image-based sexual abuse crime against an ex-boyfriend back in 2018

Yes he has spoken in the past about his mental health issues. Like many people here, I've also had mental health issues. Oddly enough those issues haven't resulted in me sexting and soliciting explicit pictures from teenagers, as has allegedly happened here.

oh my god, had not heard this about Schofield, has a decent media outlet reported on it? Has he confirmed he knew? That and the thing with his brother as well... not good.

WhiteStripePipe · 12/07/2023 19:51

I don’t understand why people on social media are calling him a paedophile when the ‘accusation’ involves a 17-year old?

Am I missing something?

Firstly the rumours is it was males not females
Secondly that's ridiculous. He's a grown man and should know seeking sex pics/hook ups from barely legal young people would cause trouble when people found out.
And it is a when not an if because its human nature to gossip.

Your post smacks of misogyny and victim blaming.

I'm sure he was blissfully unaware until last Thursday!

Sorry I didn’t explain properly- for those defending him, how would you feel if your own son or daughter had been sending photos to him, or if they had been on the receiving end of his threatening messages? Would you be so keen to let it all go?

RoyalImpatience · 12/07/2023 19:56

Oh no poor huw.

Suffering his mental health is this what we call cheating now and sending abuse messages to young girls?

Since at least lock down a few years ago?

Dinopawus · 12/07/2023 20:03

A few posters have said that police said there was nothing criminal.

I thought the BBC had been asked to pause their internal investigation while the police completed their investigation into the original, and subsequent, complaints?

It really isn't hard, not to sext multiple teenagers.

Nope, it just makes it all sound more scandalous.
