How do you pronounce 'croissant'?

It's probably the only word that I can feel myself thinking about pronunciation as I begin the sentence. There are so many different pronunciations.

  1. The French way - my preferred way as I do speak French quite well. Nonetheless, I doubt myself, especially if I'm in the company of people I don't know very well. Will I sound pretentious or silly?
  2. Cwoss-ont
  3. Cwass-ont
  4. Cross-ont
  5. Crass-ont
  6. Cwazz-ont
  7. Cwozz-ont
  8. Any of (2)-(8) with an 'ant' sound at the end instead of 'ont'.
  9. Another pronunciation

And yes, before anyone says it, I could've used IPA to write these pronunciations. But I haven't, because I don't want to and I'll enjoy any misunderstandings which arise in the comments.

Although thinking about it, sometimes 2 or 3, would probably depend subconciously on who I'm speaking to. In my head it's 1, speaking to an english person in an english sentence it might come out as 2 or 3.

I'm a bit confused by all the 'w' pronunciations. I guess the rolled French r is followed by a 'w' sound but there is an 'r' in French. My pronunciation is an approximation of the French way, so kind of krwa-song, but more nasal and less bongy at the end - like the end of restaurant, which I also pronounce with an open French nasal ending (you don't close the soft palate as you do for the English 'bong' or 'song'). I wouldn't roll my 'r' as much as if I were trying to speak French though.

Goldpanther · 11/07/2023 11:42

Kwa-son

Son rhyming with the name 'Don'

Catspyjamas17 · 11/07/2023 11:43

I can't roll my Rs to save my life, so the French rolled R comes out more like W always.

Wildandwonderful · 11/07/2023 11:43

Definitely no 't' on the end. Qua-son. I have never been able to roll my 'r's so the full-on French option is not for me!

What does it matter?

Four I think because I feel an idiot making it very French whilst in the Uk.

can I ask a related question on Estrella the beer. I believe it’s pronounced “ es tray a “ so not pronouncing the “ll” but it foxes some bar staff.

I don’t know but I also assumed it was ‘estraya’ so that’s what I say too.

I must say that I've never heard someone in this country pronounce it with the final "t".

I definitely would have a glottal stop at the end of any of these pronunciations, which is why I was led to add a -t I think (I've had to think long and hard about why I wrote it out that way, as it's not a hard t sound).

I can pronounce it the French way but I think that sounds pretentious when not in France.

I say quah-sante in my Scottish accent.

This is chat, not the life and death forum. I wanted to hear other people's thoughts.

In France : krwa-sa(n)
In UK: kruhs-o(n)

KvotheTheBloodless · 11/07/2023 11:55

In France, I use the French way. In the UK, I say "kwa-son". I never order croissants in the US Grin

NortieTortie · 11/07/2023 11:56

Cross-ont. I think if you're going to say Cwass you might as well go the whole hog and learn the proper French pronunciation.

WandaWonder · 11/07/2023 11:57

4 i think

Yetanotherusername2 · 11/07/2023 11:58

3 but without the t

TheOrigRights · 11/07/2023 12:01

I say it the french way. No need for anyone to add the T at the end.

HowAmYa · 11/07/2023 12:01

None of those. We say Croy Sont like it's someone's name 😂..DP and I regularly take the piss out of stuff like this so it's led to us permanently mispronouncing.
Paella is 'Pai Jeyya' in our house, from a Lonely Island song lol

If we are talking about a bakery I always ask for a pain au chocolat to save myself the humiliation. And because they are nicer.

Catspyjamas17 · 11/07/2023 12:03

Which is...?

UrsulaBelle · 11/07/2023 12:04

AgnesX · 11/07/2023 12:09

dementedpixie · 11/07/2023 12:10

Cwass-on (no T sound)

Like this. Stress on the first syllable.

I can't BEAR the way Americans say it!
