How do you pronounce 'croissant'?

It's probably the only word that I can feel myself thinking about pronunciation as I begin the sentence. There are so many different pronunciations.

  1. The French way - my preferred way as I do speak French quite well. Nonetheless, I doubt myself, especially if I'm in the company of people I don't know very well. Will I sound pretentious or silly?
  2. Cwoss-ont
  3. Cwass-ont
  4. Cross-ont
  5. Crass-ont
  6. Cwazz-ont
  7. Cwozz-ont
  8. Any of (2)-(8) with an 'ant' sound at the end instead of 'ont'.
  9. Another pronunciation

And yes, before anyone says it, I could've used IPA to write these pronunciations. But I haven't, because I don't want to and I'll enjoy any misunderstandings which arise in the comments.

Thanks - that's just about how I say it.

AlltheFs · 11/07/2023 12:17

Something like 3 but no t
Caveat is that I speak f all French and I’m sure it’s wrong.

My DD calls them circles though (she called them that when she was 2 and it’s stuck) so in private they are circles which is a lot easier! 😂

Perhaps we should call them crescents in England.

  1. I've never understood why I'd say 1 for this when i don't use an accent to pronounce, for instance, Paris, or Budapest etc.
shakeitoffsis · 11/07/2023 12:19

(san = first half of english word song but tongue stays low rather than rising to the palette to close the word with ng.

@MouseSculptureMadeOfOldHairbrushFluff, I know, I know. It doesn’t make sense even to me. I love cake and pastries, I love butter, I love pain au choc and brioche. But I never seem to want a croissant. 😕

To be fair I think there are a lot of disappointing croissants in circulation. Most supermarket offerings really. But when you get a proper croissant, it's just bloody marvellous.

I find brioche to be a bit meh. It's a nice word to say but the stuff itself is just dull.

hettiethehare · 11/07/2023 12:55

3 I think mostly.

The DC have started pronouncing it the American way though and I couldn't for the life of me work out why - I didn't even know it was the American way until I heard a youtuber say it (I think it was Mr Beast or one of his buddies) and it all fell into place.

costacoughee · 11/07/2023 12:57

1 or 2

costacoughee · 11/07/2023 12:57

Feel like a dick though saying it.

costacoughee · 11/07/2023 12:57

And no t at the end.

Maybe I should have been more specific - @ClaudiaWankleman .. using your spelling convention, how would you write how you pronounce the word in French?

(I am bilingual French / English.. I am just curious!)

fluffiphlox · 11/07/2023 13:04

À la française. 😀

salamithumbs · 11/07/2023 13:12

This sounds ridiculous but I say 'crossont' in my Irish accent, even though I speak French.. I'd just feel pretentious putting a French sounding word into an English sentence, almost like saying 'I'm going to Paree' instead of Paris 😬
I don't put on an Italian accent for tagliatelle either, I say it with a g!
