I don't have twitter and haven't seen any theories as to who it is, I'm presuming a man due to the figure outline being used in the press:

Not everyone trusts the police

That’s true on a personal level, and sometimes means that people don’t report offences against them. But a large corporation like the BBC is not entitled to receive information about an alleged serious criminal offence and decide to deal with it itself, in place of the police.

🙄 of course they can (and should be entitled to) have an internal investigation first. The BBC was clearly already investigating an issue concerning a member of staff, they didn’t just read about it in a tabloid first, ffs. It was the Sun who blew up the situation because ad clicks on a high profile whodunnit = revenue, and they didn’t give a shit about leaving others and their families exposed to the vipers nest of social media speculation.

The BBC has a duty of care to the staff member, so firstly establishing the facts before taking action (the same as the police 🤷‍♀️) whether you assume them guilty anyway, regardless of the facts.

Everyone at my workplace gossips about such things on WA. I would imagine it's pretty standard across many sectors.

That says more about your workplace and the people in it than about anything here. Where I work (and everywhere I have worked) if you happen to find out about investigations or the like, gossiping about it on social media or in person will get you joining that person - suspended and a disciplinary.

DontBeSillyBridget · 10/07/2023 07:36

Someone confirmed who it was to me and my husband last night and I'm absolutely devastated. Didn't think it could possibly be him and they also sent us a photo 😩

I agree completely. But if their own investigation leads to a possible offence, the police MUST become involved. (My original comment responded to the suggestion that the BBC had perhaps not passed it on because they didn't trust the police).

dandeliondaisy · 10/07/2023 07:45

Surely that photo is fake, surely. I've seen it too, must be a deepfake?

Yes. People are very gullible and like to think they have inside info.

DontBeSillyBridget · 10/07/2023 07:47

A friend at the BBC confirmed it was him.

The photo didn't come from him, it was sent on a group. I'd like to believe it's not true.

Confirmed how? What can they possibly know that isn't just gossip at this point? How do you know the photo is genuine?

MissTrip82 · 09/07/2023 23:20

What a disgusting post.

And yet entirely unsurprising.

Always, always when allegations of this nature are made there’s a core group of revolting individuals who immediately cast aspersions on the victim and their supporters. Utterly predictable and entirely loathsome behaviour. Strangely, it occurs only with allegations of sexual offences against women and children.

And if you don’t know why some people don’t go to the police, you can’t think of a single reason, you’ve surely been unconscious for the past 30 years.

The police should certainly be involved. The BBC should have gone straight to the police when they received allegations of this nature. The BBC is simply not equipped, nor is it the appropriate body, to investigate this.

Not disgusting. Not even an uncommon opinion, here or elsewhere. Not everyone in the world tells the truth, and people have a right to not be convicted without evidence. What is disgusting is the way that this has been handled elsewhere and here. I am of that weird ilk that considers that people should have facts and not mob mentality drive their actions, but I do relaise how very unusual that is on social media and MN.

And I did not in any way blame the alleged victim, any more than I vindicated the alleged perpetrator of something that may or may not be a crime. The parents went to the gutter press, leaving their adult child exposed to even worse outing - so yes, I have some doubts about where their interests lie, but at no time have I victim blamed, sought to defend anyone, nor have I indulged in this stupid and loathsome guessing game of "spot the person to hang"

If you think that an employer, any employer, should go immediately to the police to report an alleged crime for which no evidence of a crime has been provided, then you have been unconscious all your life. You'd be fine if I contacted your employer, said you pulled off the an armed heist, provided no evidence and the employer went straight to the police and stuck your name on the front page of the local rag as a criminal????

Mob mentality does not make good decision making. People here have gone insane yet again.

Um, no they didn’t confirm it to you- unless of course, the person concerned contacted you direct?
Hate to break it to you, but the photo was widely circulated, without any source credit, it could have easily been created. Or maybe not, it could be real? The point is, you don’t know and how utterly hideous for the person concerned if they are not the presenter, too late for him to ever be innocent until proven otherwise.

What a murky mess.

DontBeSillyBridget · 10/07/2023 07:54

Yes, the photo was already out there and circulating. I hope it's not real.

DontBeSillyBridget · 10/07/2023 07:54

If it's not him, he should come forward and confirm.

Apparently everyone who works at the Beeb is aware who it is, it's not a secret.

DontBeSillyBridget · 10/07/2023 07:56

I don't think they can blame him for the boy having a drug addiction. I think the mother sounds very scorned.

Also, he was 20. An adult.

JeftHeft · 10/07/2023 08:03

I think the Mum has made a mess of things and is right now probably being harassed by other tabloids.

Very strange for someone to spend 35k on 'photos when you can see millions for free on the Internet. The mentioning of the screenshot of the presenter in their underwear sounds hella threatening to me. Wouldn't be surprised if some extortion has been going on.

ImaniMumsnet · 10/07/2023 08:06

Morning all!
We'd like to remind everyone that while we are happy for the topic to be discussed - we will be taking down any posts containing speculation. Please report any of these posts to us. If we find that the speculation is ongoing we will unfortunately have to remove the thread.

LizzieSiddal · 10/07/2023 08:07

@DontBeSillyBridget Also, he was 20. An adult.

He is 20 NOW. This has been going on for 3 years and the teenager was 17 when it started.
In UK Law it is a criminal offence to have photos of a sexual nature of anyone under 18.
If what The Sun reports is all true, the BBC employee could be imprisoned for a minimum of 6 months and would be placed on the sex offenders register.

BeverleyMacker · 10/07/2023 08:08

Well it'll soon be obvious who it is,if he's not reading the BBC news tonight at 10.

Well that's funny considering all the sexual content on page 3 the sun posted of underage girls over the years.

Sam Fox was 16?

DontBeSillyBridget · 10/07/2023 08:08

So you can have sex with a 16 year old? But can't have a photo of a 17 year old?

DontBeSillyBridget · 10/07/2023 08:12

The law needs to change and should be 18 for both.

LizzieSiddal · 10/07/2023 08:13

@DontBeSillyBridget yes you are correct in both posts. The law only changed about 10 years ago. The Sun stopped using photos of teenagers only when the law changed.

BoohooWoohoo · 10/07/2023 08:21

MP Clare Short tried to get the law changed earlier but was called a killjoy for trying to get Page 3 banned from newspapers.

Willmafrockfit · 10/07/2023 08:24

so difficult for bbc news to discuss!
also the name is all over twitter

if the name had been released i wonder if there would have been less furore, although i understand why it hasnt been released, defamation, privacy,

justasking111 · 10/07/2023 08:31

When someone in our work place was accused of sexual harassment the news spread fast it was such a shock the last person you'd expect he was over 60 she 18. An email from HR head office made it clear that we were not to discuss this with anyone. He was suspended then sacked but the gagging email remained in place. This was a national charity.

The BBC will follow a similar course of action
