Bleach - Where do you actually use bleach clean around the house?

Exactly that really. Where do you actually use bleach to clean around the house?

I see on my bleach bottle instructions it suggests bleach can be used to clean toilets, kitchen/bathroom drains, sinks, floors, and work surfaces.

Does anyone actually use bleach for those other bits around the house, or do you mainly just use bleach for the toilet?

So all you people that don't like bleach, you only swim in rivers and the sea right? (There are no indoor pools that aren't treated with bleach, it would be an extreme health hazard). And you have hair that is never highlighted or lightened right?

gingercat02 · 07/07/2023 10:05

Me just toilets and occasionally kitchen sink and kitchen bin. Cleaner pretty much everything by the smell when I get home.

I do use bleach at home, but as little as I am comfortable with. And I don’t swim in pools or have my hair bleached.

What’s your point? It is fine to use a product for which there is no alternative (like pool chlorine) and at the same time not want to use it in your home when there are equally good or better alternatives.

For stained mugs I just use a magic eraser. Don't like the idea of bleach in my mugs.

Neither do I, I really wouldn't want to drink out of something that had had bleach in it!

My point is that there are many different types of bleach and some are more, or less danagerous, or damaging. Household bleach is relatively harmless, unless you drink it neat. The hysteria around using bleach you can buy in the supermarket in the home is unfounded.

I don’t use it because I can’t stand the smell of it and there are less harsh, less toxics products I can use instead.

No correlation to not using it in my home by the gallon to whether I use a pool with chlorine.

These attempts at ‘ Gotchas’ are so silly.

Thelnebriati · 07/07/2023 12:04

@SmartHome Household bleach is mainly harmless in the home, but not for the environment. Citric acid does the same job and is 100% biodegradable.

This is meant to be a “gotcha”, right?

Ah, we haven't had a bleach thread for a while <<happy sigh>>.

I get through one bottle of bleach about every 2 to 3 years. I used to use it in stained tea mugs but now I've adjusted the setting on my dishwasher I don't need to.

So I use a little in cold water to soak my white cotton dishcloths before they get washed. And maybe a little in a flower vase if it's gone manky. That's it. Oh yes, I've also used it to kill weeds - painted on not watered over randomly.

90% of my cleaning is done with hot water and washing up liquid and Ecover multi purpose spray.

BoobyDazzler · 08/07/2023 09:17

Those of you bleaching dish cloths why don’t you just put them in the washing machine with your tea towels? I use a fresh dishcloth every day and wash as normal.

chohiad · 08/07/2023 09:38

Before we had cleaners I used to use bleach to wash our hard floors, I quite like the smell! Our cleaners only use it for toilets though.

eurochick · 08/07/2023 09:52

Only very occasionally for the loo. We are on off mains drainage and the system needs bacteria. I do use bleach or denture tablets on my mouth guard daily though.

Correct. Sea swim (I surf) and I henna my hair.

User10486743 · 08/07/2023 10:14

I just put my dishcloth in with whatever wash is going on, no bleach.

JudgeAnderson · 08/07/2023 10:16

I dont think I have a dishcloth. I have a washing machine and a sponge for any hand washing that eventually gets used for a grotty task before getting binned.

Dish towels go in the wash with bath towels.

User10486743 · 08/07/2023 10:16

My main thing against bleach is that I always splash myself and ruin something with a white mark

I only bleach my dishcloths when they are too stained. I cook a lot with spices and things that stain them when I wipe up spills, and ordinary washing doesn’t take all the stains out, so I periodically I gather them all up out of the drawer and stick them in the utility sink for a couple of hours in a bleach solution before washing them.

The probably use it to clean shopping centre floors and may use it in hospitals I use these places

I don't use it at home same as I don't use or like air fresheners but they are used in other places weirdly enough and I actually go to them

DRS1970 · 08/07/2023 10:30

I use it in toilets, occasionally the shower, in drains if they are smelly, cleaning litter trays, and occasionally in the dustbins if something has leaked and caused a smell.

justasking111 · 08/07/2023 11:41

We moved to a house with a shower in the guest room. A smell built up that was awful. Turned out to be the shower trap. Now I occasionally squirt some bleach down it. I use the shower for cushions for the decking furniture. No-one has used it for years.

If hospitals, nursing homes stopped using it we'd be in a pickle.

bananaboats · 08/07/2023 11:58

I never use it

cinnamonfrenchtoast · 08/07/2023 12:00

We use it for toilets, litter trays and bins.
