Idaho mash

cocksstrideintheevening · 05/07/2023 18:42

Just had some for dinner. I don't make mash, CBA. Mostly cook everything else 'from scratch'.

It might be my new favourite food.

Anyone else like it?

Yum!

IDAHO® POTATOES, VEGETABLE OIL (COCONUT, SUNFLOWER), MALTODEXTRIN, SALT, SUGAR, BUTTERMILK POWDER, NONFAT DRY MILK, BUTTER (CREAM, SALT), MONOGLYCERIDES, CALCIUM STEAROYL LACTYLATE, NATURAL FLAVORS. FRESHNESS PRESERVED BY SODIUM ACID PYROPHOSPHATE, SODIUM BISULFITE, CITRIC ACID, AND MIXED TOCOPHEROLS.

Ooh I love some mixed tocopherols 😋

I haven’t looked up what mixed tocopherols actually are, and I’m conscious they might not be great…but I like the sound of the words so much

Rummikub · 08/07/2023 02:21

😂you’ve absolutely picked the right ingredient!

I have some bread machine recipes for potato rolls and potato bread and use it in those.

When DD4 was learning to feed herself with a spoon I used to mix up a bowl for her at lunch and chop cooked veg to stir in. She loved it.

Ooh, any chance you'd share your potato bread recipe please?

It’s basically just a fancy term for different sources of vitamin E. 😂

😇

It is very nice. I got some from Waitrose! Must get more.

FussyPud · 08/07/2023 10:36

It’s my favourite of the instant mashed potato products. I have a couple of mocks in for those days when I’m sick as a dog post-migraine; they hit the carb and salt need perfectly with a bit of cheese or gravy.

Coastalcreeksider · 08/07/2023 10:41

I bought some for my aunt and uncle (in their 90s) to try, I did think they'd hate it. No, they love it and have asked me to get them another couple of packs if I see it for around a quid. Home Bargains had it recently so will try there probably tomorrow.

Pashazade · 08/07/2023 10:52

Whereabouts would I find it in the supermarket, feeling a need to do some research......?

No palm oil? I'm in! Where do you get it from?

SquirrelSoShiny · 08/07/2023 10:56

I wish they did a dairy free version 😋

ComputerInitiateJump · 08/07/2023 10:58

I sometimes get a real craving for corned beef hash. It was a staple of my childhood, usually with a fried egg on top. Using Idahoan and the air fryer I can make it with very little mess in about 10 minutes.

DS loves it as a quick snack, but I am a convert after tasting it as it is by some magic very good. A fast and dirty fave dinner here is frozen yorkies, precooked sausages warmed up in the microwave, peas, gravy and Idohoan mash. Done in 5 minutes if you do the yorkies in the air fryer but feels like a full on dinner

That sounds yummy! I’m supposed to be on a diet too!

My new favourite meals are the small pizzas - so
Sainsburys Taste the Difference tomato and cheese pizza - tried the basic Waitrose one the other day as no others in the small Waitrose not the same! I did nuke a large yacht potato and do a quick salad which made it healthier.

My DM back in 70s would rarely get us Smash until one day we pleaded for it and had it with chipolatas, gravy and peas. She then had some in always.

areyouhavinglaugh · 08/07/2023 11:26

Would be great for camping! Sausage and mash and gravy 😀😀

Coastalcreeksider · 08/07/2023 12:23

Did anyone ever try the Idahoan potato slices that I think had cheese in it?

They were absolutely fantastic and I've never been able to get them since. Tried all the supermarkets but they only do the assorted mash ones.

Would live to get that one again.

mrsbyers · 08/07/2023 12:35

Tried it but not a fan , I’d rather have my husbands million calorie mash once a month as a treat

WickedUsername · 08/07/2023 12:45

I've had a stroke, and whilst DH is a whizz with pasta and rice dishes, traditional British food is not his strength.

He was amazed how easy it was to knock up a Shepherds or fish pie using this.

It's great for camping, fry some sausages and onions et voilà bangers and mash for dinner!

bonfirebash · 08/07/2023 12:49

I'll have to try it again, wasn't a fan
Do like the frozen mash though

Sorry! I meant to post this weeks ago!

I'm in the US and have US measuring cups and spoons. You can find these sometimes in TK Maxx.

OMG I've just had this for the first time after seeing this thread, bloody lovely.
I'm going to take it on a self catering holiday, so much easier and quicker than fresh. Also perfect if you are cooking for one as you can just make up the amount you want. Multiple packs will be purchased!

Soontobe60 · 22/08/2023 20:25

I love it! Not as good as my home made mash, but fab for a quick mid week meal

HauntedPencil · 25/08/2023 18:49

I've just made it for the first time, I can't get over how nice it is? I did as a PP said and didn't fork overly let it sit and put a blob of butter in it.

And I've just spotted your reply - thank you!

I have a set of cups etc at home as I have a few US recipes I use. Thanks again, looking forward to trying this.

Ah damn, you’ve reminded me I meant to ask some friends to bring some here when they came to visit! It’s epic and I HATE making mash

Bloody scandanavia and it’s dislike of convenience food!
