Dear major UK supermarket ...

What would you like to say to the chief exec of the supermarkets you use? I'll start ...

If you are going to sell spinach in plastic bags, please at least direct that they are stored in the refrigerated section rather than on the general unrefrigerated vegetable shelves along with the potatoes and onions etc.

Thank you Sainsburys.

@roundcork We’re fucked aren’t we.

One of the reasons they do it to is be able to stock various seasonal items - i.e BBQ meats, summer salads etc. I agree it is really annoying. Why not just have a seasonal section instead of juggling everything around>

Nope, they have a dedicated seasonal aisle for Easter eggs/seasonal trinkets/wrapping paper etc etc as well as a dedicated section in the fridge for Xmas cheese/BBQ meats etc. All that happens when there's no seasonal fridge stuff is that additional special offers go into that section ('dinner for two' etc). There's always something for the seasonal aisle, it's currently gardening stuff and camping gear.

This is literally rejigging the entire shop, moving aisles' worth of products to a completely new aisle on the other side of the (massive) shop and mixing up which products sit next to which on the shelf (often in the most illogical of ways!)

smooththecat · 04/07/2023 22:14

Honestly, the quality of the food is just not up to much. Take a visit to any supermarket in Italy and see how it could be. Also, there are just far too many weird things, we don’t need that much choice.

Who do you have to know to get the good bananas?

Bananaspliff · 04/07/2023 22:16

Dear Supermarkets

Please price your free from products fairly.

Why do cucumbers come wrapped in plastic?

Groutyonehereagain · 04/07/2023 22:22

Please tell your shelf fillers to quit squashing bags of leaves.

nopuppiesallowed · 04/07/2023 22:23

Citizens charter: from hereon all 'unidentified items in bagging area' shall be declared free of charge...that should sort your crappy diy tills out!
YES!

1WomanWonder · 04/07/2023 22:24

Have an online option where you name the dish, e.g. lasagne and then indicate how much effort you want to put in - from scratch (simmer your own passata etc), thrown together (jars of sauce) or ready made. Press a button and get all the ingredients for a named number of people.

what's with all the sushi counters?

Absolutely- it's completely ignored in our Tescos, completely lost on our aged, rural community!

@Bananaspliff
Double yes! The price for a tiny loaf of gluten free bread is eye-watering. The slices of bread are tiny. The price of all gluten free biscuits is shocking and they are far too sweet. It's terribly expensive being coeliac and it's not a lifestyle choice!

Stop selling Golden Delicious Apples. They contravene the Trades Description Act as they are neither golden nor delicious.

PUT THE HEAVY STUFF AT THE START

Yes this x 100

Oblahdeeoblahdoe · 04/07/2023 22:31

Tesco - sort the self serve tills to recognise i.e weigh, our bags so we don't have to wait around for staff to finish their conversation before they come to verify. In fact, don't bother because I've stopped using them.
Also, what's with the miniscule lettuces??

My local M&S foodhall - thank you for the wonderful Kevin who cheers everyone up.

Agree with others, all supermarkets should match our donations to the Foodbank

NO ONE NEEDS THAT MUCH CORRIANDER

Literally everything tastes better with coriander (except cornflakes).

Whatthetrolley · 04/07/2023 22:32

Groutyonehereagain · 04/07/2023 22:20

Why do cucumbers come wrapped in plastic?

Because they lose moisture too quickly if they don't and end up being floppy and inedible. Although I currently have 4 on a plant waiting to be picked so I won't need to buy any, any time soon!

Brokendaughter · 04/07/2023 22:33

If a product used to be a 6 pack of cakes or whatever & you shrink it to a 5 pack I won't just buy the 5 pack, I'll stop buying it at all.
I'd rather it was a 4 pack with a lower price than a 5 pack at the same as a 6 used to be.

2 people can share a 4 pack or a 6 pack.
3 people can share a 6 pack.

A 5 pack is a fight for who gets the extra one.
Not going to happen.

WhatADrabCarpet · 04/07/2023 20:31

If your supermarket doesn't allow your staff to water garden plants then stop selling them.

It breaks my heart to see outdoor shelves full of dead plants.

This makes me so cross.

They even leave them at full price when they're obviously dead.

I have complained in the past and was told they don't have time to water them.

So stop selling them then! 😡😡

Whattheactualwhatnow · 04/07/2023 22:36

Please make it easier to buy bread that isn’t ultra processed, and biscuits/crackers that don’t have palm oil in them

halfpasteleven · 04/07/2023 22:37

WinniFinniHadog · 04/07/2023 20:49

Dear executive.

Open up online shops for online orders like Wearhouse and then open up shops that have a fresh butcher, a fishmonger, green grocer stall, a ironmongers , habidashery area, dairy counter with cheese and milk, clothes sections, and general produce like tea coffee biscuits and so on, so it's more like an indoor market.

We can then pick our produce in paper bags and have a shopping experience. And don't risk being mowed down by your employees pushing around "click and collect" transport trollies in record time.

100% this.

newrubylane · 04/07/2023 22:39

Tesco, stop discontinuing everything. Particularly pizzas. Everything we find one we like, you promptly stop selling it.

senua · 04/07/2023 22:39

Isn't the fruit and veg still dated? I have a packet of tomatoes in the fridge that says "G6". G is the seventh letter of the alphabet. Guess which month/day the tomatoes go off.

Isomissmyoldlife · 04/07/2023 22:43

veryfluffyfluff · 04/07/2023 20:44

I absolutely agree.

It's deliberate! It's to make you visit more aisles and buy more individual ingredients that you'll then have to supplement with more fresh produce. That's also why supermarkets keep moving produce from one section to another periodically. Sneaky buggers.

Moomoola · 04/07/2023 22:44

Also mr tesco, don’t charge me a higher price if I don’t have a club card.

dint make a ridiculous profit if me when I buy for food that’s for food banks. You are already making a massive profit.

stop squeezing farmers so much. The potato farm near us has tonnes of the things that testosterone won’t buy as they are the wrong shape ( I.e.potato shape). They are then a bugger to dispose of. I mean really?

get better bloody food in. As a pp mentioned veg. In every other bloody European country is delicious. Ours looks like someone found it in the laundry basket.
Bread? What is it with so many different loaves and all of them awful?

stop with the packaging. STILL plastic? Really?

don’t buy the high street car park and put in charging machines so that no one parks there cos it’s suddenly expensive and everyone goes to your new supermarket because oh! Parking is free!

stop using palm oil and all those preservatives. You have a duty.

im sure there’s more.

oh yes! Don’t berate your staff to be in the shop floor early but expect them to stay late for free.

get rid of those awful serve yourself machines.

I’ll stop now.
