Dear major UK supermarket ...

What would you like to say to the chief exec of the supermarkets you use? I'll start ...

If you are going to sell spinach in plastic bags, please at least direct that they are stored in the refrigerated section rather than on the general unrefrigerated vegetable shelves along with the potatoes and onions etc.

Thank you Sainsburys.

There had been no changes, nor any new schools, just same old, same old navy and grey as the core colours

And those colours used to be in store, until ASDA changed its systems

Yes, it's mad. If our town's Asda sell out of blue school shirts quickly, I go to the Asda in the next town, where they appear to have the same stock delivered, but there are no schools there that have blue shirts - so they always have loads left!

BlueMoonCity · 05/07/2023 11:35

Dear All Supermarkets, please ban people who decide to have a family/friend reunion in the middle of the aisle, while leaving their trolleys at awkward angles! (Lighthearted!)

TheWorldisGoingMad · 05/07/2023 11:43

Instructions printed in dark grey on a grey background make it bloody impossible to read! Putting instructions on the inside of the packet.

Leaving manky rotting veg in among the fresh produce, because it's not refrigerated.

Making us buy a multi-pack of something, instead of the one or two we actually need.

Still using unnecessary plastic. Not that it matters much after all the masks, ppe and plastic Covid tests are now in all our fields, rivers and streams. Microplastics in our food and water system on every level, and there's no getting rid of it. Paying for plastic bags achieved nothing more than a new income stream for supermarkets.

huntingcunting · 05/07/2023 12:02

Loose fruit and vegetables so we can buy as much or as little as we need. Think of the single people for once. I don't need a 2 kg bag of fucking carrots. I don't need 20 tomatoes. Fruit and veg should be loose and people can bring their own bags (I have some nice little net ones I bought once at Aldi) thereby cutting down on packaging and on food waste because I'm not having to chuck away half-dead carrots.

Dear Asda - please go back to putting use by dates on fruit and veg! I don’t want raspberries delivered on a Monday afternoon, that are a liquid mush on Tuesday morning!

I am sure this no dates on fruit and veg are nothing to do with saving food waste, but rather a way for supermarkets to sell goods past their best, without pickets noticing.

Agree BUT an even better way would be to put the date they were packaged, so you can grab the newer ones if you’re not using straight away.

There are unfortunately people out there (I know a few) who would throw fruit and veg away once it reached its best before date despite it still being perfect, as they thought it was a rule, so do think we still need a way to change the way these people think

labamba007 · 05/07/2023 11:28

Yes!! Why do they do that?!

I assumed they had to put it on an outside wall for the electrics

Quisquam · 05/07/2023 12:44

To be fair re the raspberries even the ones I pick from my own garden deteriorate massively overnight. They are a buy the day you eat product.

We eat a boiled egg, sourdough toast, raspberries, strawberries and blueberries for our breakfast 5 days a week. We have bought raspberries from every major supermarket, and we don't have this problem with Tesco, Sainsburys, Morrisons, Waitrose and M & S. Their raspberries last several days.

As for a pp's comment that we don't have to shop at supermarkets; no we don't. I have cancelled Asda deliveries at DH's request (because he gets our breakfasts), and am trying Tesco deliveries now. If we have the same problems, we will look elsewhere for our fresh fruit and veg.

ITA with pps' comments about self service tills. I far prefer to queue up for the manned tills, regardless of how long it takes. If supermarkets can't get staff, its because of the way they treat them - the DC have worked at three supermarkets between them. They shouldn't have to hear on the news, what their next payrise will be; or have to justify why they can't start work at 6.30 am, having applied for shifts from 12 noon - 6 pm! Funnily enough, we refused to take DC to work at 5.30 am, because there was no public transport.

Sometimes I think that supermarkets would be happier catering solely to families and sod the single people.

FatCatBum · 05/07/2023 12:51

Meeting · 04/07/2023 20:47

  1. most importantly , please reintroduce dates on fresh produce packaging, or at least include the date that the item went on display. You claim this is all about reducing food waste, but all that happens is that food waste is passed onto the customer when a fresh food item that they’ve paid full price for is mouldy/turning bad the day after they’ve bought it.

Totally agree, they could at least have 'display until' dates.

The quality of fruit and veg has reduced dramatically where we are. Half of it is already going off while still in the shop, and no people aren't going to buy black cauliflower and yellow cabbage

TheIsleOfTheLost · 05/07/2023 12:53

Why is fresh sweetcorn taken out of its perfectly good natural packaging and cut up into plastic wrap? It goes off quicker than in the husk and adds to non-recyclable plastic waste. Madness!

FatCatBum · 05/07/2023 12:55

Dear supermarket, don't tell us that you can't use tray liners for online deliveries (making the delivery a million times easier to unload) and then put 50% of the items in their own sodding bag anyway 🤬

Now I gave the inconvenience of trying to race to unpack the containers while the driver is waiting AND a giant pile of pointless red and white little plastic bags which have to go in the bin

AutisticLegoLover · 05/07/2023 13:01

Keep gender politics out of shopping. Take your flags and stickers and concentrate on providing good quality food and household products at fair prices without unnecessary plastic and politics.

Second this!

Especially when they glare at you when you say "Excuse me - could I just squeeze past, please?" as though YOU are the one at fault (NOT lighthearted 😠)

Absolutely second this!
Stop virtue signalling and do your day-job properly. Grr.

Alphabet1spaghetti2 · 05/07/2023 13:49

@Mydpisgrumpierthanyours
sorry! I did have to google. I think I need to watch more films!

Emotionalsupportviper · 05/07/2023 13:56

@Mydpisgrumpierthanyours

I misread your user name as "mydisisgruntlierthanyours" and was slightly disappointed when I properly discerned it. 🙁

dancinginthesky · 05/07/2023 14:01

Please stop removing the disabled loos

Please have a different way of getting trolleys like a card scan - coins too fiddly and always forgotten plus you'd stop people stealing them or not returning and save your staff time since if it's not returned you know who it is and can debit them for the trolley cost

Pipsquiggle · 05/07/2023 14:01

I can answer so many queries on this thread (worked in grocery retail for 20+ years), maybe I should do an AMA thread 😂

MrsDanversGlidesAgain · 05/07/2023 14:01

BlueMoonCity · 05/07/2023 11:35

And the ones who walk away leaving their trolley across the aisle.

Needmorelego · 05/07/2023 08:43

@MadisonAvenue Adams banned you because you sent them a couple of questions?
Really?
Really……
I doubt that.

You can doubt all you like but that’s what happened.
REALLY

underneaththeash · 05/07/2023 15:36

Stop selling bean sprouts in enormous packets. No-one needs that many. And they go manky really quickly!

MadisonAvenue · 05/07/2023 15:39

BitOutOfPractice · 05/07/2023 08:46

Try having to but for multiple December birthdays. It’s atrocious!

Also, not everyone calls their mother “mum”. Me and 4 million other west midlanders say “mom”. Please give us some choice.

It’s Mom where I am in the West Mids but for some reason Card Factory stock Mum or Mam cards and never Mom. I don’t know anyone around here who uses Mam.

Mydpisgrumpierthanyours · 05/07/2023 16:02

Please don't put yellow stickers OVER the cooking instructions or ingredients.

Needmorelego · 05/07/2023 16:18

@MadisonAvenue ok….if you say so.
As a former retail worker it’s hard enough to get someone banned from a shop for shoplifting or behaving in a dangerous manner. You obviously really pissed them off 😂

GretaGip · 05/07/2023 16:29

It's "FEWER"
