Dear major UK supermarket ...

What would you like to say to the chief exec of the supermarkets you use? I'll start ...

If you are going to sell spinach in plastic bags, please at least direct that they are stored in the refrigerated section rather than on the general unrefrigerated vegetable shelves along with the potatoes and onions etc.

Thank you Sainsburys.

Stop selling bean sprouts in enormous packets. No-one needs that many. And they go manky really quickly!

I've often thought this!

Keep gender politics out of shopping. Take your flags and stickers and concentrate on providing good quality food and household products at fair prices without unnecessary plastic and politics.

Yes. I don't want gender politics or politics of any kind. I just want a good shopping experience.

And Tesco Bradley Stoke, please reinstate your disabled toilet. It's a massive store, and reaching the back of it with a small child who suddenly needs the loo (or with someone with an IBS flareup) is not the time to discover it's out of action. To get to the nearest loo, you have to run the length of the store, across the shopping centre, up 2 flights if stairs and miles along a corridor.THIS IS NOT GOOD ENOUGH!

Stop profiteering.

Needmorelego · 05/07/2023 10:30

@Theoldgreygoose I don’t drive either so big supermarkets are actually harder for me to get too and I can only buy what I can carry so I use a selection of smaller shops.
I mostly do my main shop from Iceland via home delivery and get fresh fruit etc from a branch of Lidl near my daughter’s school. A lot of my household stuff (cleaning etc ) and snack foods come from Poundland. My husband also gets some things from a small Sainsbury's at the railway station on the way home from work.
I rarely go to a big supermarket because I actually find it inconvenient for me.
Now the lloyds pharmacy has gone I probably won’t ever go to my nearest large sainsbury’s ever again because it’s not very good and it isn’t even worth it for non food goods (clothes, magazines etc).

If people don’t like the way supermarkets do things - then shop somewhere else.

You are lucky to have so many options! I don't live in the UK and the closest shops to me are two supermarkets. I don't want to use home delivery as I prefer to shop in person, so I just go to the supermarket several times a week - they are only 10/15 minutes walk away and I prefer the closer one. (Dear other major supermarket - if you had more checkouts open I might use you more!!).

Supermarkets here have most vegetables/fruit loose so you can buy as little as you need, the same with fish. They also bag your groceries for you (not all supermarkets, but the ones in my town do). Supermarkets here don't sell clothes, other than knickers/tights.

huntingcunting · 05/07/2023 12:02

Loose fruit and vegetables so we can buy as much or as little as we need. Think of the single people for once. I don't need a 2 kg bag of fucking carrots. I don't need 20 tomatoes. Fruit and veg should be loose and people can bring their own bags (I have some nice little net ones I bought once at Aldi) thereby cutting down on packaging and on food waste because I'm not having to chuck away half-dead carrots.

I live in NZ, and while some fruit/veg is bagged most of it is loose. I live alone and if everything was in bags I wouldn't be buying it.

GellerYeller · 05/07/2023 21:32

@SoSad16 apologies if it wasn’t you on the apple discussion, but why do they need to be waxed? Aldi in particular seem to have loads on!
While I’m here, Dear Morrisons, why are your paper bags so expensive and rubbish? When I’ve forgotten my own bags I’ve walked out like a Crackerjack contestant balancing my purchases precariously in my arms rather than buy another useless bag. I realise the Crackerjack comment ages me, and it’s my fault for not having bags or buying another reusable bag! I guess it gives people a laugh in the car park as I’m wrangling groceries while trying to get my car keys out or driving off with a pizza on the roof 😂

It’s Mom where I am in the West Mids but for some reason Card Factory stock Mum or Mam cards and never Mom. I don’t know anyone around here who uses Mam.

I’m in staffs so mum here, but I have met many moms and a few mams. Weirdly, our local Tesco had a birthday card in that read ‘happy birthday mom’. Last week, I assumed it was stock sent to the wrong store. I used to spend a lot of time in Wolves and always saw them there, but not seen one in these parts before.

Love the Crackerjack analogy!!

I don't want paper bags either. They're great if you're buying a bar of fancy soap from a craft boutique or a pair of sunglasses from Boots; but in a shop where you're loading up a trolley with tins, jars, bottles and big packs of potatoes - really? I don't want people telling me patronisingly that "they're stronger than you might think"; I realise that they can carry a bit of weight, but they are nowhere near strong enough - and if they give way, they rip instantly and deposit your shopping all over the floor, whereas at least the plastic ones squeak and pull and give you a little bit of notice that they're going to yield. And why do their plastic bags-for-life cost twice the price they do in all of the other supermarkets?

It's a shame, Morrisons used to do some of the very best bags of all - those big yellow tough ones were brilliant (similar to the ones that Aldi have now), we still have a couple that we use regularly when we can. If you can carry the weight of it yourself, you can get 8 or more 2-litre bottles of water/pop securely in them.

@FatherJackHackettsUnderpantsHamper love your user name!

FatherJackHackettsUnderpantsHamper · 06/07/2023 00:37

I occasionally find a bottle of Dreamy Sleepy Nighty Snoozey Snooze stashed away in one of my corners as well, next to my usual contents Grin

XenoBitch · 06/07/2023 00:41

Dear Supermarket.. can you please sell a salad bowl that is for one person... not some 'party' thing for over £3.

Coastalcreeksider · 06/07/2023 09:11

Stop leaving pallets of foodstuffs stuck in the middle of an aisle where people cannot get past if someone in front is getting something from a shelf.

Yesterday, a local Aldi had three pallets of stuff in the middle of one aisle and caused a huge amount of problems for people getting by if someone stopped to get something. The queue behind me when I was getting eggs was ridiculous as someone coming in the opposite direction had also stopped to get something. No one could get by.

Sort it out Aldi - and Lidl too - they are both really bad for this.

Needmorelego · 06/07/2023 10:00

@Coastalcreeksider one thing about Lidl/Aldi type shops - many of them don’t have stockrooms (or only have small ones). Stock comes in and goes straight to the sales floor. It’s part of keeping costs down.
It the same with bigger supermarkets not having night time shelf fillers now. Night staff are more expensive so they have been cut back or gone completely.

bonfirebash · 06/07/2023 10:26

I wish I could buy one or two sticks of celery
I use it for cooking but actually hate it so it never gets used up and takes up freezer space. Just want one stick for my stew!

KirstenBlest · 06/07/2023 10:31

@bonfirebash , buy it as a bunch not cut into stalks, and use only what you want. It will keep in the fridge for weeks. You put the root bit in a tiny bit of water to keep it going.

MackenCheese · 06/07/2023 12:14

Oh and can you please stop advertising back to school clothes when the kids haven't even broken up yet. Us parents are under enough pressure, thank you!

this doesn't make any sense.
who in their right mind buys school clothes 2 months before they are needed for a child that either will not grow over summer or grows 3 sizes...

So you’re asking supermarkets not to advertise to parts of the country that already have broken off for the summer, ie Scotland and Ireland?

VegetablesFightingToReclaimTheAubergieneEmoji · 06/07/2023 12:45

I get paid in cash and need to pay you with it. Please don’t make it so difficult.

Borntobeamum · 06/07/2023 12:49

Lidl. Please stop telling people to go queue at Till number (insert number) unless there is a member of staff there to Man it!
Yesterday I was told to go to another til so did as I was told. I unloaded my trolley and stood. And waited.
Finally a member of staff sauntered to the till and logged on.

Meanwhile people who had been behind me at the original till had paid and left the store.

Does a member of staff give you an extra cabbage every time you drop something?

(Another Ole Wumman here! 😂)

A lot of people on here could solve their issues by using their local butcher, fishmonger or greengrocer.

My small local town has all 3 of these and I can choose how many of everything I want. I appreciate that's not the case for everyone but if you are choosing the convenience of getting everything from one place then you lose the freedom to buy a single chicken breast etc.

I would have to go to 3 separate towns/villages to get to a butcher, fishmonger and greengrocer- a round trip of about 40miles!

Could you not just use a wooden spoon instead? Grin
