Liz Jones and her ex: Just why?

I really could not avoid her latest batshit crazy piece in the Daily Mail because excerpts are all over Twitter. Do they really get paid enough for that?

She's mentally ill and has been for a very long time.
He's a wanker.

I used to read her column in the MoS (she's had it for years) and it's clear she needs help and MoS is exploiting that for sales and clicks rather than getting her the support she clearly needs.

I stopped reading it years ago because it felt like using the mentally unwell for entertainment.

Was talking to a journalist friend, and apparently they would have been paid thousands for this. I didn't realise that; a bit naive. I assumed that only celebs were paid that much.

Guess times are hard for both of them....

From memory she's always complaining that her income doesn't match the lifestyle she insists on.

I used to read her in the Sunday Times in the 90s, when I was a teenager. I am astounded this is still going on.

It has to be made up, nobody could sustain this levels of mental illness over 30 years without ending up in hospital. In some ways I am impressed she has managed to sustain an entire, apparently lucrative career out of behaving like a messy drunk in print.

That piece left me with about the most horrible feeling I've had after reading a Daily Mail article. I can't work out who is more at fault...

Him for being the most utterly unpleasant man to a woman I've ever come across (according to his own writing)...

Her for writing about the descent and death of their marriage, week after week in the Mail...

The Mail for publishing this nonsense...

I'll say controversially , if anyone wrote articles about their partners/spouse in such detail every week, listing all their bad points, never saying one pleasant thing about them, then they might expect vitriol in return. I'm not excusing Nirpal as I think his piece was vile,but I'm always surprised anyone wants anything to do with her. She seems very shallow and self absorbed.

Liz Jones has never really been on my radar; the last I heard was that she was in her 60s and being made to move from her rented house and facing a very uncertain future/retirement, the inference being that she has earned good money and made very poor financial decisions and is skint.

Other than that, I didn't know know much about her and have never read her columns.

There is something intriguing (albeit tragic) about her though. She does seem very vulnerable and doesn't seem to live in the real world. She also strikes me as one of those "right place right time" people as she has obviously had a successful career but from what I have seen of her writing, she doesn't seem to have much talent or substance. She seems to have come about in the era before the internet where somebody writing candidly about very personal stuff was novel and people were intrigued.

Her lifestyle is interesting but, as I say, she does seem a tragic soul.

The ex husband is vile.

I'd agree with this.

Also I am not surprised he reframed the age gap as being exploitative as he himself aged.
