Not winning the lottery is making me sad.

That’s it really.

I would be content let happy to win a couple million. Obviously the massive 124 millions jackpots are great, but a couple million I’d be happy with that.

How much would you like to win to really make a difference in your life, not just a good splash about for a nicer house and new car, but really change your life?

Jackpot on the thunderball (500k) would just be bloody beautiful in all honesty. Pay the mortgage off, finally give my kids a room each and go up into the loft, buy my hubby a better car so he can get to work without worrying, take my family on a lovely holiday to cheer them all up from a bloody miserable few years of family deaths, surgeries, heartbreaks and money worries, set myself up a little business so I’m not having to sell everything I own on Vinted anymore just to pay for the food shop, then save the rest for retirement.

Bollocks would it make me sad.

It would change my, and most importantly, my children’s lives for the better. We would no longer live next door to a weed dealer for a start.

I cannot stand it when people say money doesn’t make you happy. It gives you choices in life. Having no choice makes you unhappy.

Yep. Patronising nonsense.

I'm not close with any of my extended family and don't see them much so it wouldn't really concern me how it would affect my relationship with them. I have DS and my mum, those are the only people I really care about. Don't have a husband or partner and don't plan to!

ddisaster · 04/07/2023 11:03

I've found my people.

CluelessHamster · 04/07/2023 11:32

I would like to win set for life. I'm 53 so really would be set for life! I would keep it very quiet and gradually upgrade my lifestyle.

It would not make me unhappy 😁

Dragging myself out of bed to go to work makes me unhappy!

The research that found that money doesn't make people happy... Iirc it was over a certain amount doesn't increase happiness but that amount was something like £150k a year - beyond the wildest dreams of most people!

I might be wrong but that's my recollection of discussing it at uni!

AlwaysWantingIceLollies · 04/07/2023 11:50

I'd love a million. That'd see me right. Not asking for much is it. 😂 buy a house, nice car and start a business.

If I won big, big, I'd give most of it away. I have a mental list of who would get money if I won the euromillions.

StaySpicy · 04/07/2023 12:12

Even £500k would change my life. Pay off the mortgage and my student loan for around £105k. Convert loft/build small extension for around £100k. Put £100k in savings/investments for DS. Then I'd use around £150k to start my own business, that I just know would thrive as there nothing like it round here. Any money left I would gift to my nieces and nephews, have a holiday etc.

No debt and the chance to run my own business would be seriously life changing.

Silverumbrella · 04/07/2023 12:20

I am too but mainly because I know if I won big I could make so many other people happy too. For example I’d buy my sister a home, she works so hard but has never been able to buy her own place and will probably have to rent her whole life, I’d love to give her a little gift bag with keys to her new forever home.

If I won a huge amount of money, I would randomly and anonymously fill up peoples go fund me.

Especially for people who need money to pay to modify houses for disabled children, or need other equipment to make their lives easier. Being able to do that would bring me happiness.

HenrysLastWife · 04/07/2023 14:27

I'm selflessly prepared to take the risk to be less happy sitting on millions in the bank. Take one for the team.

superplumb · 04/07/2023 15:02

We stopped the lotto when the price went up but we play euro when there is a roll over and also the thunder ball. I get irrationally angry when I don't win and hate the winners...pure jealously on my part.

MissChanandlerB0NG · 04/07/2023 15:08

I never do the lottery/scratch cards unless I'm feeling 'lucky'. I'll buy them on a whim and get extremely upset when I don't win. The audacity of it 🤣

KeepSmiling89 · 04/07/2023 15:13

Not going to lie, I'm also disappointed. I don't play regularly, but the most I've ever won is another lucky dip! If that free lucky dip doesn't win me anything though, I'm down in the dumps!
I wouldn't mind a million - I'd buy my own house outright. Pay off my car that's currently on hire purchase. Take DD on holiday to Disneyland (more for me than DD to be honest!)

mast0650 · 04/07/2023 15:18

I'd rather not win anything. Far too much stress deciding what to do with it, whether to give most of it away, feeling guilty if you don't give it away, deciding where to give it if you do. Happy as I am thank you. Literally never think "if only" with regard to money. Appreciate I'm very comfortably off and we enjoy our jobs, which obviously makes a huge difference.

Horriblewoman · 04/07/2023 15:19

I occasionally get a ‘ooo I should play the lottery’ passing thought which I then convince myself means I’m going to win.

it’s never happened!

500,000 would be lovely.

1m would be ideal

any more would be wonderful

TheFireflies · 04/07/2023 15:26

I’d love to win enough to pay off my mortgage and allow me to give up work, but the more years that go by and the closer I get to either retirement or death, the more angry I get with it 😂

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 04/07/2023 15:27

Welcome to the pissed off none winning lottery members club. 😂

Minikievs · 04/07/2023 15:29

I'm with you OP!!!
Like many pp, winning the Euromillions is my destiny.
I am OUTRAGED whenever I don't win. Which is every time I play 🙄

I always get really angry at those smug bastards that win a trillion pounds and then say "Oh I'm not giving up work! I love my job! And I'm going to stay living in my two up, two down, driving my 61 plate Corsa"
What the fuck are you playing it for then Brenda?!?!?! Stop ruining my DESTINY by winning it instead of me!!

さくらchan · 04/07/2023 15:33

I've got a spare million if anyone wants it?

WedTheBed · 04/07/2023 15:33

Hahaha I’m so glad it’s not just me that feels very strongly about not winning big 😂

I also keep a mental list of everything I would do with it, who I would help, where we would travel, how to make sure my children are set up nicely for the life ahead of them, but also without making them grow up having everything come so easily. I feel like they should learn, but not struggle.

Money would absolutely buy us happiness, without a shadow of doubt. We are always worried about money, it’s our family dinner topic everyday. Thankfully both me and DP are on the same page so we don’t argue about money.. we just need more of it 😂 and me and my immediate family are close enough that I know I can give them a realistic amount each without there being upset or expectations. We’ve always talked about how much we would give each other if any of us won 😂

I was part of a work syndicate years ago, and we'd had a go on the Friday night euromillions. It was a roll over.
i was in first thing on Saturday. So as my computer was on I checked the numbers on BBC at the time (lottery website blocked as gambling).

We had gotten 4 numbers and 2 stars! One of the big ones surely, one number off all of them. My heart was pounding. I was frantically trying to think who could get me the breakdown of winnings. (5 & 2 stars were something like £110m, so surely 4&2 would be a couple of million!). I was planning my new car at the very least.

It made us £2907! Between over 60 of us!
My £44 bought me a takeaway.

But I can say I did nearly win the euromillions.

That’s very generous of you. I don’t actually need it myself (I am comfortable and not into stuff) but if anyone else fancies it, please be careful that you don’t get scammed.

That's about the level of income optimal for being happy. Which is just under 100k annually IIRC.

Winning large sums is a different set of studies. Most people end up less happy after a couple of years. And many end up broke as well. Everyone wants to believe they are the outlier though. It makes perfect sense as they also think they are going to win when it's vanishingly unlikely. If you believe that, you can believe you will beat the odds and be happy with 60 million (even though you probably won't be).

I do think smaller, but still large, sums probably make you happier. Money that fits in your life. 'Pay off the mortgage' amounts not 'helicopter, private island and Ferrari' amounts. Debt makes you more unhappy than money makes you happy. Any amount that clears your debt will make you happy. Statistically.

BlessedBeTheFruitCake · 04/07/2023 16:13

Just enough to be able to buy an average home would be lovely.

WedTheBed · 04/07/2023 16:19

@さくらchan Only if it’s going spare! 😂

oh to dream of having spare money eh! 🤭

well at least this thread has cheered me up.. I like to read what everyone else would do with their big winnings 🤭

CluelessHamster · 04/07/2023 20:22

That makes sense MrsTerryPratchett.

Possibly why 10K a month on set for life appeals to me more than multi millions all at once.

I would definitely be the outlier though. I will come back and tell everyone about it 20 years after my big win😅
