Mine are "nickname" when you mean "shortening" and "double-barrelled" when you mean "hyphenated"

OP posts:

*That's so cringe.

NO IT ISN'T! Cringe is what you do. The thing is cringey.*

I would have used cringeful but, having looked in the dictionary, I don't think this is a word so you're right.

@CurlewKate it can't be that much of a neologism if it was coined by Punch!

It's late Victorian. Maybe once it's passed its 150th birthday the OP will no longer dismiss it as a newfangled trend.

DappledThings · 03/07/2023 20:22

CAHMS. MH stands for Mental Health. Unless you've started saying Health Mental instead then it's obviously CAMHS.

I'm afraid you're stuck in 2019 there. Cringe is now an adjective whether you like it or not.

Izzabellasasperella · 03/07/2023 20:24

DF which can mean dear friend, dear father or dear fiancée. Very annoying having to read some posts very carefully to work it out😀

I think you mean cringeworthy.

A lot of people seem to think that the Church of England is hugely wealthy.

In reality - yes, it has some beautiful buildings (that cost a lot to run) and some sumptuous furnishings (that cost a lot to keep in good repair) and a fair amount of plate (that being pretty specialist would only realise any value if melted down, which is culturally a bit of a no-no and pretty much a way of last resort).

Meanwhile our diocese has spent several decades selling off ancient vicarages in order to balance the yearly budget. Now that the benefices have all been merged and the remaining vicarages are all modern small places we've moved on to a different tactic - not replacing vicars immediately. You have to wait for the one four parishes later to retire before they let you advertise.

When someone says I instead of me.

"He bought my friend and I a drink".

It's ME.

You don't say "he bought I a drink". If you add another person in it is still "me".

Please don't get me onto the subject of people using 'myself' when they should use 'me', either 😤

WillowtreeHouse · 03/07/2023 20:26

Draws instead of drawers.

Would of/could of.

Alot when they mean A lot

Posters quoting the entire first post of the thread (the OP). There's absolutely no need. We know you're replying to the first post, as that's what the fucking thread is about.

Both of these!

Confusion over Dc numbering. In ye olde days of MN the number referred to the order in family. Dd2 means second daughter, not Dd aged 2. Context makes it clear when we get to Dd 13 (unless a Radford is posting) but dd 2, 3 or 4 can be confusing

Yes - this! I was thinking about precisely this the other day. When I read "DD5" on here, I still think "fifth daughter".

All the grammatical and spelling errors are awful, but the "DD3" etc business is a specific MN irritation.

When people write 1990’s instead of 1990s. I don’t understand the use of the apostrophe?

I don't like it either - cf CD's - but at least when I was younger it was absolutely correct standard.

I sometimes do that if it's several pages in and I like it when others do. It means if they refer to a specific part of the post, especially when quoting, then identifying need to go back and gorth to re read the original post.

WillowtreeHouse · 03/07/2023 20:30

I saw a thread a couple of weeks ago saying 'DH and me breastfeed baby' and I couldn't read anymore because there was so much wrong with that statement.

Juanmartinez · 03/07/2023 20:30

When someone says , thank goodness his arm was only fractured and not broken.

CC4712 · 03/07/2023 20:31

Chester draws 😂

BarbaraofSeville · 03/07/2023 20:31

People who ask for the answer to a factual question that they could Google. I don't know what they plan to do with all the different answers they get, most of them wrong.

Also posters who give financial 'advice' that is just wrong such as how overpaying a mortgage saves thousands in interest when the OP has said they're 2 years into a 10 year fix with an interest rate of 1.5%

Yes! So often I'll read a thread about an issue with DD5, and think "how have you never had that happen with the older 4 DDs"? Then realise they mean DD(5)

...except that when it's really long it doesn't help at all. This is demonstrated by the fact that many posters have started to repeat the bit that they're referring to, under the quote. They could simply do that bit in bold without the whole quote. As we did Back In The Olden Days before quotes.

I don't know why we can only quote whole posts. Are we not to be trusted not to maliciously take things out of context? I was on another place (FJ) which allowed selective quoting and it was really useful.

Another for me is when people on here reference school year instead of age.

Example: “my DD is in year 6 …” it’s totally meaningless for the significant number of non Brits on here. Just say their age for goodness sake. It’s so American.

If it was ‘so American’ would they reference ‘year 6’?

Which brings me to my pet peeves: using ‘American’ as an insult.

And don’t get me started on the obsession with Russell Group universities ( argh!!!!).

Catabogus · 03/07/2023 20:33

Agree with PP that “phased” instead of “fazed” is all over everywhere and makes me wonder what on earth the poster thinks it means (“I wasn’t phased” - so were you all in one go, rather than staggered?)

The other one for me is the sheer number of posters here who seem to type “persue” (with an E) for “pursue” (with a U). Then of course autocorrect will try to change it to “peruse”, so we end up with some truly bizarre sentences (“Exit perused by a bear”?)

My gorgeous, funny DD
