Mine are "nickname" when you mean "shortening" and "double-barrelled" when you mean "hyphenated"

OP posts:
Theloosegoose · 03/07/2023 20:49

Mums encouraging other mums to let their babies "cry it out"

Jaichangecentfoisdenom · 03/07/2023 20:49

People who are wondering through the woods whilst wandering what to wear.

MagratsDanglyCharms21 · 03/07/2023 20:50

Recimmend me a.... eg 'recommend me a movie'. It's 'recommend a movie to me'. The direct / thing comes before the 'indirect / person'. It shouldn't matter but it really grates.

Shakespeare used gotten.

I get that, we as British hardly used it, now all of a sudden it's everywhere.
Even my DM reading Mother commented on it.

Another for me is when people on here reference school year instead of age.

Example: “my DD is in year 6 …” it’s totally meaningless for the significant number of non Brits on here. Just say their age for goodness sake. It’s so American.

Americans don't say "year 6"; they say "sixth grade".

Seddon · 03/07/2023 20:52

Alot, abit, aswell, infact, incase, atleast and all similar bastardisations of our language.

Florissante · 03/07/2023 20:52

catzrulz · 03/07/2023 20:47

Gotten, why the f has this suddenly appeared everywhere?
Soon we'll all speak with American accents, instead of just their rotten words.

I was sat. We were sat.
I was stood. We was stood.

midsomermurderess · 03/07/2023 20:53

Misusing 'gaslighting'. And so many poster start their posts with 'myself'.

EineReiseDurchDieZeit · 03/07/2023 20:53

Refusing to use the words To Be

Needs fed
Needs cleaned

Needs Fuck Off more like

Gifted as used to refer to giving presents

SirChenjins · 03/07/2023 20:56

Requests to guess the gender of the baby - when as everyone with half a brain cell knows it’s sex.

Alot

PathOfLeastResitance · 03/07/2023 20:56

When a poster gives the merest suggestion that their child may be having difficulties at school…. “Just apply for an EHCP”.

  1. it’s an EHCNA that you apply for.
  2. a plan is not the answer to everything.
  3. In reality they are for the highest level of need.
See also, the suggestion that schools are responsible for everything from anti social behaviour to teaching CPR to the dog poo in the alleyway.

Gotten is a Scottish word Americans also say Gotten,so it is actually used correctly.

@SallySunrise you've discovered the origin of my username! With you on all of these but especially nickname when they mean diminutive

‘Me and went shopping.’ Using me as the subject, it should be ‘I’ as in ‘ and I went shopping.’ The very worst offender. Me went shopping. No ‘me’ didn’t. 🤯

I only see it here. I have never heard anyone in real life do it.

My son just texted me and said ‘me and …’ 😄

WTFAreYouForReal · 03/07/2023 21:00

MacDonalds.

Because its deliberate.

It doesn't make you look like you eat better than everyone else, it just makes you look affected.

MintyIguana · 03/07/2023 21:00

Sorry if this has already been said. Taking the reigns instead of the reins.

Tsulsaquoola · 03/07/2023 21:03

I text him/her.

No you didn't. You texted him/her.

TeleTropes · 03/07/2023 21:08

RelaxedPigeon · 03/07/2023 20:02

Myself.

I don't even need to explain it because almost everyone will be nodding.

This. And not just on MN, everywhere. It makes you sound dumb.

Rubycoola · 03/07/2023 21:08

Calling the Mail, The Daily Fail. Usually preceded by 'I don't usually read it but here's a link!' You do read it, calling it the Daily Fail doesn't mean you're still part of the club of whatever it is you want to be part of. Just call it the Mail.

Same sort of pathetic humour as people who call Facebook things like 'Arsebook'. And yet, still have a profile and post on it.

Posters who can't say Dog but have to say DDog. For the love of DGod.

Yup. This is a class thing, it’s working class to say I text him

I have always liked this word, even more so when I read another poster’s comment a while back expressing disdain for it 😄

You’ll have gotten used to it before you know it!

There are Britishisms we Americans don’t care for so I do relate to how you feel.

Cozytoesandtoast00 · 03/07/2023 21:13

I hate it when highly educated individuals condescend by being a twat.

Rubycoola · 03/07/2023 21:13

Oh how ironic. I got the theme of this thread wrong! Ignore my previous post!

Tired toddler Mum brain here!

I don't agree that it is wrong to use 'double barrelled' to mean a compound surname. Not everyone with a compound surname uses a hyphen anyway. Andrew Lloyd Weber, for example.

I don't use one either.
