Mine are "nickname" when you mean "shortening" and "double-barrelled" when you mean "hyphenated"

OP posts:

@EggInANest "I don't agree that it is wrong to use 'double barrelled' to mean a compound surname. Not everyone with a compound surname uses a hyphen anyway. Andrew Lloyd Weber, for example."

Use compound surname then. Double-barrelled is a neologism coined by Punch to mock the posh!

What's the cut-off date for something being a neologism? Everything was a neologism once.

Yikesno · 03/07/2023 19:57

Brought instead of bought and draws instead of drawers. Both have been said already and neither are exclusive to mumsnet.

MarmiteRoll · 03/07/2023 19:57

People writing weary instead of wary. If you're weary of someone you're tired.

Handholdplease85 · 03/07/2023 19:57

Rest bite.

When people use the Reddit-style 'my partner (M, 35) and I (F, 36) ...' rather than the accepted Mumsnet DP, DH etc.

ForTheSnarkWasABoojumYouSee · 03/07/2023 19:58

My niche annoyance dates from the pandemic when asymptotic was regularly used to mean asymptomatic.

Nails on a blackboard for mathematicians but nobody else even saw it as a problem.

Giltedged · 03/07/2023 19:59

Councilling. I’m fairly laid back about most SPAG errors but this one drives me nuts.

DemonicCaveMaggot · 03/07/2023 19:59

I have seen 'tow the line' so frequently on Mumsnet and generally across the internet that now when I see 'toe the line' I think that is wrong.

'Bare' vs 'bear'. It works very well in the US when posters would type 'I have the right to bare arms', you certainly do sir, short sleeved t-shirts for everyone.

Nibbles, picky bits, champers, 'I popped him on the boob' can all get to heck.

ButIWantedToBeYourValentine · 03/07/2023 19:47

People who say "slightly wrong", when something is definitively wrong or right 😆

'Almost unique' is another one. It is either unique or it isn't.

Nojumpingorrunning · 03/07/2023 20:00

‘Reign in’ rather than ‘rein in’ makes me want to commit an offence.

Excellent thread recently when a poster complained that she was 38F and having trouble getting laid. Lots of people clicked to offer helpful suggestions for more flattering bras only to find that the OP was a thirty-eight year old woman.

Annoys me when someone starts spouting off about how they've given up UPFs and how disgusting it is that anyone eats anything processed etc. it's always said with the kind of zeal of the newly converted and you just know they gave up UPFs 5 days ago after listening to the Van Tullekens podcast and now think they're a nutritional expert and their body is a temple etc.

Diddykong · 03/07/2023 20:01

Pooh instead of poo. That poor bear!

Conflating resilience and tenacity

VintageThoughts · 03/07/2023 20:01

I when it should be me.

It doesn't make you sound posh 😂

EL8888 · 03/07/2023 20:02

Tough question. I’m going with:

lose / loose. For the love of god, it’s not that hard!!!

describing someone as your partner. When you have been on a handful of dates / been together 5 minutes

And won't include wine, chorizo and posh crisps because that's what naice people eat.

Same 🙈

RelaxedPigeon · 03/07/2023 20:02

Myself.

I don't even need to explain it because almost everyone will be nodding.

@EggInANest

Andrew Lloyd Weber, for example.

Is he German? 😁

GrandTheftWalrus · 03/07/2023 20:04

When people talk about lockdown and their "1 hour allowed outside" no idea where that came from.

I wonder what will happen the next time they have a hangover and someone offers them a bacon sandwich.😂

Handholdplease85 · 03/07/2023 20:05

@DemonicCaveMaggot surely even worse than “I popped him on the boob” is the horrifying “I boobed him to sleep” or “I was boobing him for ages last night”

it’s not a verb!!!

grass321 · 03/07/2023 20:05

Nibbles, picky bits, champers, 'I popped him on the boob' can all get to heck.

That reminds me. To boob as a verb. Ugh.

I'll be in the minority but I hate the use of 'baby' without 'the' or 'your'.

Handholdplease85 · 03/07/2023 20:05

Cross post with @grass321 who is also correct.

Kayemm · 03/07/2023 20:06

Unique.

You are not going to get a unique name unless you just bang your fist on the keyboard and use what comes up.

The words that you want are uncommon and unusual.
