Mine are "nickname" when you mean "shortening" and "double-barrelled" when you mean "hyphenated"

Pedal stool 😂😂

‘Fine toothcomb’ always makes me think, am I the only one who only brushes my teeth? I’ve never needed a tooth comb. FINE-TOOTHED COMB.

midsomermurderess · 05/07/2023 15:35

I saw hendo a little while ago. Lots of confusion until seen in context.

It’s always been fine tooth comb, it’s just as correct as your preference.

What's a hendo?

Lays eggs, of course! 🐔🥚

I used to get more annoyed before auto correct. Now I blame auto correct for a lot of the numpty stuff I see, which lets a lot of people off the hook and takes my blood pressure down cos I don't expect people to do an A1 proof read to meet standards.

Fine tooth comb is almost correct. Fine toothcomb, as PP gave the example of is entirely wrong.

For me it's using Lend and Borrow the wrong way round that drives me crazy.

"I asked my friend to borrow me £20" 😤

MarkWithaC · 05/07/2023 17:03

Getting words/names slightly wrong really annoys me!

On here
'Equalities Act'
'Olivia Coleman'

I worked with someone who used to do similar in conversation – Cath Kitson, Kirsten Scott-Thomas. Had to bite my tongue all the time.

chaosmaker · 05/07/2023 18:31

@TheMoth no it is and has always been etcetera, phonetic. Just watch 'The King and I' the one with Yul Brynner in!

It's the 'teeth' of the comb that are fine. Nothing to do with your mouth!

Akiddleetivy2woodenchu · 05/07/2023 18:35

Rediculous and Benifits.

howaboutchocolate · 05/07/2023 18:39

When people equate 4 weeks with a month.

Exactly. Which is why that poster pointed out it should be fine-toothed comb, a comb with fine teeth and is irritated by the incorrect fine toothcomb which would indeed suggest an implement for combing one's teeth.

You're welcome. We've got a nits outbreak in DS's class so fine-toothed combs are on my mind 😂

Oh thank goodness I thought it was just me that was irked with that one.

'Should of' instead of 'should have'.

Pedal stool 😂😂

Surely not? 😂

SauvignonBlanche · 05/07/2023 20:16

I hate ‘could have’ or ‘should have’ and ‘disinterested’ instead of ‘uninterested’. I blame my former English teacher. 😄

What's wrong with would/should have? Isn't that correct?

"I asked my friend to borrow me £20" 😤

Yes! It's the same with "learn" for "teach" ie "she's learning me how to drive"
