Civil servants getting £1500

Sorry if there is already a thread.

Has anybody had this yet or had any confirmation of the details?

My department has basically confirmed that it’s in the pipeline but not when, or who is eligible, if it will be pro rata’d for those who work part time etc.

I know I should be patient but it would be very welcomed!

Thank you @chohiad, much appreciated.

chohiad · 06/07/2023 20:37

I won't tag you again but if you report your posts MN will change your name back for you, I will report my other post so it's deleted

@Sunshineandflipflops but I don’t think the senior civil service are exactly hard done by, either salary wise or bonus wise. 🤔

Hmmm. I used to be a SCS. Bonus? What is that? Pay wise was not exactly stellar, and no pay rise for the whole time I was a SCS. I left and joined the private sector, immediately doubled my salary and a lot less stress

FragrantBumFluff · 06/07/2023 21:52

Thanks for all the replies, been confirmed now for August payroll and pro rata for PT.

My Department is paying in August. Reason for the delay compared to OGDs is because our taff are being offered the option to spread the payment across the full financial year to minimise adverse effects on UC, tax brackets, etc. Time's being allowed for everyone to consider their options before the cut-off point for payroll adjustments.

In my Department part time staff are being pro-rated, which as a full timer myself I don’t think is fair if this is truly a COLC payment.

Apologies @UndercoverCS, I’d just had some bad news about how long my DH is going to have to wait for cancer treatment earlier this morning so was in a foul mood, but that was no excuse to take it out on you.

I sniped back at you, really sorry to hear that, hope your dh gets his treatment soon 💐

I’m really sorry @HarpyValley - I get snippy even when I haven’t had terrible news so I more than understand. All the best to you and your family.

Does anyone know if there's a list of depts that have already recieve it? I noticed a few people working for smaller depts seemed to have got it in June's pay. I transferred at the start of this month and I'm not sure if my new one has already handed it out.

I haven't really had much contact with anyone to ask, not likely to even be in the office until end of next week. Obviously I don't want to miss out on it but I also don't really have sight of who is who at the moment (chaotic start) so I don't feel comfortable asking just yet.

chohiad · 07/07/2023 12:20

@JonSnowedUnder I think it's an extremely small number that have paid, does your organisation have an intranet? Can you look through announcements?

JonSnowedUnder · 07/07/2023 12:30

@chohiad I had a look and didn't see anything so I think its unlikely to have been paid. This is one of the problems with working from home, it's hard to just ask casual questions in the kitchen!

Sorry but WHY are civil servants getting £1500??

Sorry but WHY are civil servants getting £1500??

Why is anyone getting a COL rise or one off bonus? Also civil servants have had very minimal pay rises over the last 10 years.

Sorry but WHY are civil servants getting £1500??

Because most of us haven't had a pay rise in a long time! Our 2022 pay award has been with Treasury for over 6 months, the last pay rise I had was 1.5% given in 2021. Also, it's not extra money it's out of our existing budget. We are struggling to recruit and retain staff.

chohiad · 07/07/2023 13:20

Ignore them, don't give them satisfaction, I bet they've already cowardly unsubscribed, got their dig in and off they trot.

Blarn · 07/07/2023 15:07

Ours is being paid in July and prorata for part time. Which does make sense, I'd rather it wasn't because I am part time but I am happy with it.

My husband and someone else I know (don't really discuss pay with many friends) have both had at least one lump sum payment in the last couple of years and one was a few hundred pound more than this. It's very common thing which businesses have been doing where they can.

And it isn't extra money from the governments, it is coming out of existing budgets.

Florenz · 07/07/2023 18:12

They don't deserve it. Most normal private sector workers don't get random payments of £1500 for no reason. And it's us who will be paying for all these £1500s.

chohiad · 07/07/2023 18:15

@Florenz thanks for the £1500, we appreciate it Smile

Florenz · 07/07/2023 18:17

Seriously, what have they done to deserve it?

Most private sector workers don't have to pay for their own Christmas do. Most private sector workers get decent pay rises. A lot of private sector workers get annual bonuses. I've been in the civil service for 35 years, and this is the first payment of this type I've ever had. So yeah, we do deserve it.

Yeah, ta Flo!

chohiad · 07/07/2023 18:24

Absolutely nothing, this country runs itself practically. There's a special branch of fairies that ensure people get their benefits, some more that issues passports and driving licences and guards our borders, Covid sorted itself out as well we know, we actually have leprechauns working in the MOD and some unicorns can write national security policy in their sleep amazingly. All we do is turn on our computers from home before doing a few miles on our pelotons, but the subscription is pretty expensive so this payment will help us maintain it. So thank you Flo, we couldn't do it without you.

Plenty of private sector workers have received something similar over the last few months. My DS works for a big accountancy/audit firm (not that he does accounting or auditing!) and he got a cost of living bonus over the winter. My DD is cabin crew and also got a bonus to help with energy costs.

But yeah, we're rolling in our free money 🙄

What do they deserve, out of interest?

They'd be much better off with pay that had kept level with either inflation or private sector pay growth than a non-consolidated one off payment. Do you think they would have deserved that? Or did they 'deserve' the years of pay freezes and pay rises stubbornly below inflation since long before the current crisis?

I remember many moons ago, when I was a civil servant and Gordon Brown was the chancellor, getting a letter from him saying how much he regretted that he couldn't give civil servants a pay rise that kept pace with inflation because civil service pay was an important tool in keeping inflation low. Always so motivating to see the purchasing power of your pay chipped away for the greater good....

Most normal private sector workers have, of course, enjoyed much higher wage growth, both since 2010 and very notably over the last year or two (6.1% v 2.2% were I think the latest figures.)

A non-consolidated one off payment is much cheaper for the exchequer than a pay rise that kept pace with private sector wage growth.

Ah thanks Florenz.

I mean I pay taxes too, so following your post I would like to also thank myself and all civil servants for paying our taxes to enable the cost of living payment, that we will then be taxed on.
