Cornelius (a very old man)
Verity - not unusual in UK but unusual here in Ireland
Cartier
Chanelle - I've met lots of variations on that name since then

Kezia - I had never come across this til I lived in England
Keir - my favourite English name - again - it was new to me when I heard it.
Common names to me are Irish names like Róisín, Fiadh and Maeve etc...

My dad told me of someone whose name was John Smith, and, to distinguish him from the hundreds of other John Smiths, had been given the unique middle name of 'Five-eighths'.

A girl called Petergaye, which suited her brilliantly and also which she totally owned when teenage boys made the inevitable wise cracks.
Years ago I worked with a Kissy - her real name.
And maybe not too unusual in Turkey, but a boy called Cem -pronounced Jem. Lovely name.
I think my favourite though was a boy called Glory. Such a beautiful sounding name, and on a boy so unexpected yet perfect.

Therira · 04/07/2023 01:26

‘L-a’, which was pronounced Ladasha. Craziest I ever heard.

grizzlekick · 04/07/2023 01:31

@Angelil yep really, Baby Hades. They didn't think anyone would make the connection. They told us before he was born what they planned to call him and they were told by many people it was a bad idea, but they went ahead!
@IamnotHWhittier we hoped it would get rejected here too!

I also know a Swastika. She’s Indian.

I know of a Jzero. His siblings also have very unusual names but I think this was the most unusual out of all of them. I've never heard it anywhere else.

Mars27 · 04/07/2023 02:13

There are two different types of unusual names.

Real but uncommon like old English names, and the surreal made up ones that sound like a noise, or have too many extra letters or are just plain bonkers .

Things like Latasha, Shaniqua, Mikita, Prince Chekai are just made up ridiculous stuff

Seeleyboo · 04/07/2023 02:16

I also know a woman with a daughter called Persephone. She said it was a good name to sort out the wheat from the chaff, i.e. see who knew how to pronounce it. Apparently a lot of people pronounce it as Perce or percy -foan Nice.

ginrunny · 04/07/2023 03:01

Also Cinnamon - girl.

Those are names used and passed down by a particular culture and have their own historical use. Part of African American naming.

Fraaahnces · 04/07/2023 03:10

I met twins called Betty and Gladys. They were adorable 18m/o little dollies and I couldn’t believe that their parents LIKED them when hearing their name.
